Two funds investing in defensive stocks are the only exchange-traded funds in the world that had a positive return every year over the past decade, CNBC Pro research has found. The two funds stood out among 8,300 equity ETFs worldwide screened by CNBC Pro using FactSet data. Over that period, the ETF more than doubled investors' money, with a cumulative total price gain of 118%. While the MSCI Healthcare index, valued in euros, dipped slightly into negative territory in 2016, 2020 and 2022, the Amundi ETF's total returns have remained positive because of the weakness in the pound sterling. However, Tabet also pointed out that the health-care sector, especially European pharma, tends to underperform in election years.

Investors are pricing in a best-case outcome where earnings rise and inflation returns to normal in a continued economic expansion. “It’s a tough needle to thread,” said Steve Sosnick, the chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. “And that pretty much pulls forward almost all the returns, in our minds, for 2024.”AdvertisementCrit Thomas, a global market strategist at Touchstone Investments, has the same concern. “And so at 21x earnings, there’s very little margin for error here.”AdvertisementFourth-quarter earnings mostly met measured expectations , as did forward guidance. Clark Bellin, the chief investment officer at Bellwether Wealth, said he’s less worried about valuations broadly and is more interested in seeing which sectors look cheap.

Evercore ISI's Julian Emanuel thinks Nvidia's monster rally is fueling a fear of missing out in the market. "That's the first time that's happened since 2021 for us," the firm's senior managing director said on CNBC's "Fast Money" on Monday. In his Sunday note, Emanuel warned clients there are similarities to Y2K emerging, particularly when it comes to momentum. Meanwhile, Nvidia , the global leader in artificial intelligence chips, is up 46% so far this year and 240% over the past year. "If you can't see yourself being a buyer down there, you should probably lighten up a little bit," said Emanuel.

As S&P approaches 5,000, this one trend has been unwavering

It's been a bumpy road from 4,000 to 5,000, but the overall trend stays with big cap tech. Talk about timing: It launched just as the S & P 500 was recovering from the banking crisis, and MAGS has been one of the star ETF performers of the last year. A bumpy road from 4,000 to 5,000 The S & P 500 had been comfortably over 4,000 from mid-2021 into mid-2022, when rising rates pushed the broad index below 4,000. This is true not just this year, but since the S & P went over 4,000 at the end of March, as has international investing. If you own the S & P 500, which has become tech-dominant, you are happy.

Strong earnings, or rate cuts? Instead of worrying about weak earnings growth and persistently high interest rates, investors are now counting on the opposite. Markets should cut their expectations by half and prepare for mid-single-digit profit growth and three to four rate cuts, Doll said. At that point, a flurry of rate cuts from the Fed wouldn't be enough to save stocks, the Crossmark CIO said. However, there are two mega-cap growth stocks that Doll is enamored with: Meta Platforms ( META ) and Microsoft ( MSFT ).

The stock market may not go much higher for the rest of 2024, according to HSBC. "We expect to see better entry points once the market re-prices rates expectations." That's compared to market expectations of 140 basis points. "That slowing would likely dampen earnings growth expectations and increase recession probabilities." Tech and consumer discretionary sectors should see the highest earnings growth, according to the firm.

The 10-year Treasury yield started the new year trading around 3.8% after a steep decline in late 2023. Against this backdrop, CNBC Pro asked three strategists and money managers how they would allocate $50,000 with yields rising again. Specifically, he recommended bills with a three- to six-month maturity, which investors can gain exposure to through exchange-traded funds such as the Vanguard Short-Term Treasury ETF (VGSH) or SPDR Portfolio Short Term Treasury ETF (SPTS) . Exchange-traded funds that offer exposure to these assets include the iShares 20 Plus Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) and Vanguard Intermediate-Term Corporate Bond ETF (VCIT) . watch nowDespite a sluggish start to the year, a record number of product launches and a red-hot November have put 2023 back on pace to be a solid year for ETFs. Roughly $1 trillion has gone into money market funds this year, but some are questioning whether the solid year-end stock rally will attract some of those flows back into equities. "You saw that enormous cash pileup going into money markets, and ETF flows were muted. "We talked about the money market funds," he said. He pointed to strong inflows into high-yield ETFs such as the iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG) and SPDR Bloomberg High Yield Bond ETF (JNK) and SPDR Bloomberg Short Term High Yield Bond ETF (SJNK) — along with dividend ETFs such as the Pacer U.S. Cash Cows 100 ETF (COWZ).

The market is going to worsen early in 2024 before recovering, according to Evercore ISI. The firm sees the S & P 500 falling in the first half of next year to 3,970 as a "recession materializes and politics [amplify] volatility." An inverted yield curve also portends the start of a recessionary period in the first quarter of 2024, he added. "'Defense Wins Championships' is a consistent theme between [the] last hike and first cut in the recession playbook," said Emanuel. By comparison, the S & P 500 is up 20.1% year to date.
