The PDF document is a 271-page opposition research file on former President Donald Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio. But on Thursday, reporter Ken Klippenstein, who self-publishes on Substack after he left The Intercept this year, published one of the files. “If the document had been hacked by some ‘anonymous’ like hacker group, the news media would be all over it. As president, Trump authorized the assassination of military leader Qassem Soleimani. The Vance file appears to be the one Klippenstein hosts on his site.

HOUSTON — A Black high school student in Texas who was punished for nearly all of his junior year over his hairstyle has left his school district rather than spend another year of in-school suspension, according to his attorney. It would allow him to return to school while a federal lawsuit he filed proceeds. George’s federal lawsuit also alleged that his punishment violates the CROWN Act, a recent state law prohibiting race-based discrimination of hair. In February, a state judge ruled in a lawsuit filed by the school district that its punishment does not violate the CROWN Act. Barbers Hill’s hair policy was also challenged in a May 2020 federal lawsuit filed by two other students.

Trump was previously not expected to meet with the Ukrainian president, who has already held meetings on Thursday with both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump's planned meeting with Zelenskyy comes days after Zelenskyy called Vance "too radical," according to a story published Sunday in The New Yorker. Vance responded to Zelenskyy on Wednesday, saying, "I don’t appreciate Zelenskyy coming to this country and telling the American taxpayers what to do." Biden and Zelenskyy will meet again on Oct. 12 in Germany, according to the White House.

Smartmatic and Newsmax have reached a settlement in the voting technology company’s election defamation lawsuit against the right-wing news outlet shortly before the case was set to go to trial. The lawsuit focused on Newsmax's false claims that Smartmatic's machines rigged the 2020 presidential election for Joe Biden. Smartmatic sued Newsmax Media in 2021, alleging it claimed Smartmatic’s devices rigged the 2020 election. Former President Donald Trump and his allies have continued to promote false claims that the 2020 election results were manipulated to favor Biden. Smartmatic in April settled a similar defamation lawsuit against One America News for a sum that was not disclosed publicly.

Andy Beshear ordered the sheriff accused of gunning down a judge in his chambers to resign by the end of the week or face removal proceedings. The Letcher County Sheriff’s Office could not be reached for comment Thursday. Letcher County Judge/Executive Terry Adams did not immediately respond to a request for comment. By comparison, from Ohio’s March primary through August, Democrats held the edge, dropping $78.5 million on ads to Republicans’ $59 million. “Bernie’s special interest allies are dumping hundreds of millions of dollars into this race to try and defeat Sherrod because they know Sherrod will always stand up to them to do what’s right for Ohio,” Brown spokesperson Matt Keyes said in a statement. Democrats, who hold a one-seat majority in the Senate, are growing increasingly nervous about Sen. Jon Tester’s re-election bid in Montana. Democrats had a clear advertising advantage coming out of a contentious March primary that cost Moreno’s campaign millions of dollars to win. Donald Trump’s presidential campaign told NBC News on Wednesday that if the former president were re-elected, his administration would support “universal access” to in-vitro fertilization, potentially opening up the door for same-sex couples to receive coverage for the expensive fertility treatment. President Trump also supports universal access to contraception and IVF,” campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. Many of Trump’s campaign promises regarding LGBTQ issues center on transgender people. Only seven states — including Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey and New York — require IVF benefits to include same-sex couples, according to a report from nonprofit news website Stateline. In May, a gay couple filed a first-of-its-kind class action lawsuit against New York City alleging that the city’s health insurance plan is discriminatory because it doesn’t cover IVF for male couples.

The Treasury market, though, hasn’t been paying attention. Officials penciled in another 50 basis points in reductions by the end of the year and another 100 by the end of 2025. That sentiment is evident in the “breakeven” inflation rate, or the difference between standard Treasury and Treasury Inflation Protected Securities yields. The 5-year breakeven rate, for instance, has risen 8 basis points since the Fed meeting and is up 20 basis points since Sept. 11. Taken together, the various dynamics in the Treasury market are making it a difficult time for investors.

DALLAS — Southwest Airlines executives on Thursday outlined for Wall Street their vision to boost profits: extra legroom seats starting in 2026, assigned seating, international partnerships and overnight flights. He had served as CEO of AirTran, the airline Southwest combined with in 2011, and was a consultant to Southwest after the merger. Southwest has supported Jordan despite calls for his replacement by Elliott, which didn’t immediately respond to the airline’s plan it laid out on Thursday. The war for the first battleground electoral vote may have been decided this week before a single ballot was cast. They also pointed to the lawn signs and other symbols of enthusiasm for the Harris campaign in the city. By failing to move enough legislative votes into his column, Trump lost his chance to tuck away all five of Nebraska's electoral votes without mounting a campaign. That poll has Harris up by 9 percentage points over Trump. For now, Democrats feel good about the odds that they will look back at this week as the moment they locked up their first electoral vote.

Two in three voters say the country is on the “wrong track,” as voters weigh whether Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump would be better able to change that less than two months from Election Day. The latest NBC News national poll finds 65% of registered voters surveyed earlier this month say the country is on the wrong track, while 28% say it’s on the right track. “While the wrong track data is now under 70% for the first time since September 2022, it is still a terrible 65% for the party in power,” Horwitt said. NBC News surveys have found steadily high rates of voters saying the country is on the wrong track for years — and especially since the coronavirus pandemic began in March 2020. But Harris does have an advantage over Trump when voters were asked which candidate better represents change, with 47% saying Harris and 38% saying Trump in the poll.

Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill Wednesday that would have helped Black families reclaim or be compensated for property that was unjustly taken by the government. The proposal by itself would not have been able to take full effect because lawmakers blocked another bill to create a reparations agency that would have reviewed claims. The California Legislative Black Caucus has backed a series of reparations packages in the state. The caucus cited concerns that the Legislature would not have oversight over the agency’s operations and declined to comment further on the reparations fund bill because it wasn’t part of the caucus’ reparations priority package. The administration’s Department of Finance said earlier this year it opposed the eminent domain bill because it was not specifically included in the budget.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been hit with five federal charges – including wire fraud, bribery and solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national – according to a sprawling 57-page federal indictment unsealed Thursday. Although the Bentley Suite for two nights would have cost approximately $7,000, Adams paid less than $600, the indictment says. And so, the building opened as requested by a Turkish official who had plied Adams with travel benefits and other gifts, the indictment says. In addition to the free travel and hotel rooms, Adams received illegal campaign contributions from foreign donors, including the Turkish government official, the indictment says. Adams has repeatedly said that his administration is cooperating in the investigations and he's focused on his work as mayor.

Emmanuel Littlejohn, 52, received a lethal injection at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary and was declared dead at 10:17 a.m. His execution came after Republican Gov. The five executions would also mark another grim milestone — 1,600 executions since the death penalty was reinstated by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1976, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. Littlejohn was 20 when prosecutors say he and co-defendant Glenn Bethany robbed the Root-N-Scoot convenience store in south Oklahoma City in June 1992. Littlejohn’s attorneys also argued that killings resulting from a robbery are rarely considered death penalty cases and that prosecutors today would not have pursued the ultimate punishment.
