WASHINGTON, Dec 3 (Reuters) - The Pentagon said on Sunday it was aware of reports regarding attacks on an American warship and commercial vessels in the Red Sea, the Associated Press reported. "We're aware of reports regarding attacks on the USS Carney and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and will provide information as it becomes available," the Pentagon was quoted as saying in the report. The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Maritime security sources on Sunday said that a bulk carrier ship had been hit by at least two drones while sailing in the Red Sea. CNN —The USS Carney shot down two Houthi drones headed in the ship’s direction in the southern Red Sea on Sunday and responded to a distress call from a civilian commercial vessel that was fired upon by a ballistic missile, a US defense official said. A US official said other commercial vessels were also “attacked by Houthi missiles today,” though it’s unclear how many or which vessels specifically. The Houthi-run Yemeni Armed Forces claimed on Sunday that its naval forces had carried out attacks against what it called “two Israeli ships” in the Red Sea’s Bab al-Mandab strait. According to Yemeni Armed Forces’ statement, the vessels Unity Explorer and Number Nine were engaged with a naval missile and drone, respectively, after rejecting warning messages. Last month, the USS Thomas Hudner shot down multiple one-way attack drones launched from Yemen.

A U.S. naval ship shot down several Houthi drones after commercial vessels were attacked in the Red Sea, the Pentagon reported on Sunday, the same day Yemen's Houthi rebel group said it had targeted two Israeli ships there. "We're aware of reports regarding attacks on the USS Carney and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and will provide information as it becomes available," the Pentagon said in a statement. Later in the day, a National Security Council official said that preliminary assessments of the situation show that only the commercial ships, not the Carney, were targeted. As it assisted the Unity Explorer, the Carney destroyed another Houthi drone headed towards itself and the Unity Explorer. "The Yemeni armed forces continue to prevent Israeli ships from navigating the Red and Arab Seas until the Israeli aggression against our steadfast brothers in the Gaza Strip stops," the Houthis said.

A U.S. Navy destroyer shot down three drones during a sustained attack in the Red Sea on Sunday, the Pentagon said, in what could signal another escalation in the tit-for-tat attacks between the American military and Iranian-backed militants. The destroyer intercepted three drones during the attack, United States Central Command said in a statement, including one that was headed in the direction of the Carney. In the statement, Central Command said the attacks originated from areas in Yemen that are controlled by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia. In October, the Carney shot down three cruise missiles and several drones launched from Yemen that the Pentagon said might have been headed toward Israel. In its statement, Central Command said “we have every reason to believe that these attacks, while launched by the Houthis in Yemen, are fully enabled by Iran.

"The town is basically one giant Airbnb," David Francis, an Oklahoma state official, told the Times. Unpaved roads plague rental owners, as does unreliable water infrastructure, which is essential to maintain the hot tubs that keep guests happy. Some cabin owners who bought properties recently, when prices were high, also worry that there aren't enough traveler bookings to make their investments worthwhile. It's enough of a gap, though, to deflate some new rental owners' dreams. "I hope I don't have to sell the cabin," Winegar said.

A US Navy warship shot down a drone that was heading in its direction, US officials said Wednesday. The drone downed by USS Thomas Hudner, which was operating in the Red Sea, came from Yemen. In 2016, the militant group attempted — and ultimately failed — to hit the destroyer USS Mason with several missiles while the vessel was operating in the Red Sea. The Red Sea has been a hotspot for drone and missile interceptions since the start of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war that began following the latter's October 7 terror attacks. COP28’s big challenge: green cash for poor states

Rather than drawing attention to this paucity of ambition, al-Jaber wants states to commit to trebling global capacity of renewable energy by 2030. Progress in China and the West is largely a function of cash: these regions accounted for 84% of the $1.3 trillion committed to global climate finance in 2022. They calculate that by 2030, developing countries need to invest around $2.4 trillion a year in order to decarbonise their economies. The problem is that the developed world has consistently missed targets to channel climate cash to less developed counterparts. In September al-Jaber announced a $4.5 billion scheme to deploy UAE state cash and private sector resources to help Africa decarbonise.

CNN —A US warship shot down a drone that is believed to have originated from Yemen in the Red Sea on Wednesday, according to two US officials. The USS Thomas Hudner, an Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer, engaged a drone that originated from Yemen on Wednesday and was heading towards the ship, a defense official confirmed to CNN. The Pentagon said the missiles were fired by Iranian-backed Houthi forces. Wednesday’s engagement comes a week after a US MQ-9 Reaper drone was shot down by Houthi forces off the cost of Yemen. It also comes amid continuous attacks by Iranian-backed forces in the region.

Glynn will also be advising on how to mitigate civilian casualties in urban warfare, the official said. The advisers will not be engaged in the fighting, the unidentified U.S. official said. CNN —A US warship that intercepted drones and missiles near the coast of Yemen on Thursday encountered a larger and more sustained barrage than was previously known, shooting down 4 cruise missiles and 15 drones over a period of 9 hours, according to a US official familiar with the situation. Their trajectory left little doubt that the projectiles were headed for Israel, the official said, a clearer assessment than the Pentagon’s initial take. The drones and missiles were intercepted with SM-2 surface-to-air missiles launched from the USS Carney. US interceptions of Houthi launches are exceedingly rare, making the timing of this incident, as tensions rise in Israel, more significant. In response, the US fired sea-launched cruise missiles at Houthi radar facilities in Yemen.

Biden’s Rule of Engagement: Don’t

Leaders of Egypt and Jordan and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called off a planned summit with President Joe Biden. “Don’t,” he said, warning Iran as well as the U.S.-designated terror group Hezbollah that runs Lebanon and any others from intensifying the crisis by escalating their involvement. But perhaps most effective of all, experts say, is the single word Biden continues to repeat: Don’t. “When the president says, ‘Don't,’ and then moves an aircraft carrier, that looks good. Middle East analysts go back to the point that Hezbollah and Iran likely don’t want to escalate the war either.

A U.S. warship operating near Yemen and two military bases in the Middle East came under drone attack this week, U.S. defense officials said, in what may have been targeted attacks on the U.S. in response to the fighting between Israel and Gaza. The destroyer intercepted multiple projectiles near the coast of Yemen, the officials said. Drones attacked a U.S. base Tuesday and again Wednesday near the Syrian-Jordan border, causing minor injuries, defense officials said. The attack at al-Tanf base happened the same day a U.S. base in Iraq also came under a drone attack. There, a U.S. contractor died of a cardiac event while trying to take shelter, the officials said.
