Matt Gaetz formally sought to remove the House speaker on Monday evening, filing a motion to vacate that would force Kevin McCarthy from his post in what will be a historic clash within the chamber’s Republican caucus in the days to come. “It is becoming increasingly clear who the speaker of the House already works for, and it’s not the Republican conference,” the Florida Republican said. And though it only takes one lawmaker to bring up a vote to vacate the speaker, it would require a majority of voting lawmakers to succeed.
