The West WingOne of Trump’s most important picks will be his White House chief of staff. Karoline Leavitt, who was Trump’s campaign spokeswoman, is being considered as White House press secretary – a job that typically is the most public-facing position in the White House. National security postsTrump has suggested his national security team would be tasked with reassessing the United States’ posture toward Ukraine and Russia, China, Iran, and the simmering conflict in the Middle East. The debate over a renewed Trump’s “America First” agenda is expected to pit Republican national security hawks against the party’s isolationist wing. Secretary of state and national security adviser will be among the most hard-fought positions to stand at the forefront of those shifts.

How to cope with post-Election Day stress

Just as in 2020, now is a good time to pause and analyze your physical and emotional stress. “How we view our stress actually matters to our health,” said Dr. Cynthia Ackrill, a stress management expert and former editor for Contentment magazine, produced by the American Institute of Stress. Deep, slow belly breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system to counteract stress signs such as an elevated heart rate and a burst of adrenaline. “Everyone needs regular practices to notice when stress is taking hold and a (tool belt) of ways to deal with it. “Because the election hype has been so divisive, it can strain our relationships, especially with those who don’t share our viewpoints,” she said.

As Election Day finally arrives, election officials, legal experts and researchers are bracing for a flood of disinformation and legal claims as vote counting begins. The final week of the campaign featured three dynamics that could lead to a protracted legal dispute if the results are close, legal experts said. Election experts say that if a clear winner emerges quickly and voting proceeds without major disruptions, large numbers of Americans may have faith in the results. A misleading advertisement from the Election Integrity Network says “The Glitch Is In” alongside a carousel of news coverage of such procedural Election Day issues. The Election Integrity Network’s founder, Cleta Mitchell, promotes her thousand-strong group as a kind of “national neighborhood watch.”Researchers also point to a new kind of infrastructure around documenting and sharing such rumors on Election Day.

A white supremacist is accused of trying to destroy an electricity substation in Tennessee in an attempt to bring down the regional power network and disrupt American society, authorities said Monday. The theory was popularized by manifestos left by perpetrators in a number of high-profile neo-Nazi and white supremacist terrorist incidents, including the killing of 51 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2019. Philippi drove to an electricity substation, along with undercover FBI agents, to carry out reconnaissance, the bureau said. While driving, he ordered C-4 explosives from the undercover agents, and at a later date he bought black powder intended to be used in pipe bombs. Philippi was arrested on Nov. 2 by undercover agents acting as co-conspirators who had agreed to be lookouts.

The “leader of the free world” always holds a huge sway over the 7.9 billion people who don’t get a vote. The election “will have significant implications virtually for everyone in the world — for good or evil,” said Dong Wang, an international studies professor at Peking University. Trump and Harris have “completely different competing visions of the global order,” said Wang, executive director at the university’s Institute for Global Cooperation and Understanding. And so influential Chinese observers see Trump as one who brings unwelcome chaos and unpredictability — as well as his beloved tariffs. During his first term, he started a trade war with Beijing, imposing $360 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods.

It is unclear exactly when the incident occurred but both the video and reports in Iranian media began circulating on Saturday. Authorities in the Islamic Republic have used the morality police to enforce the strict dress code in a crackdown since the protests that swept the country two years ago. After receiving a warning from campus security about dress code regulations, she stripped off her clothes and walked around the university." In a post Saturday on X, Mahjob rejected the suggestions that the student had protested the dress code and questioned her mental state. Let’s get one thing straight: The polls can’t tell us who is going to win the presidential election. The race is that close and uncertain, and polls in previous election cycles have been that far off the mark. With those caveats out of the way, let’s not ignore the consistent storylines in the polls that have defined the political forces shaping the election. It's not the -33 net rating he had heading into his first presidential election in 2016, but it's not what successful presidential candidates have typically enjoyed, either. And whether he was running against Biden or against Harris, Trump's biggest issue advantage has long been on the border and controlling immigration.

A tropical disturbance in the Caribbean is likely to become a hurricane as it passes over Cuba and into the Gulf of Mexico by midweek, federal forecasters said Sunday. The Air's Force 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, using Super Hercules fixed-wing aircraft, got a close look Sunday, the hurricane center said in an afternoon forecast discussion. Still, the upward movement of warm air and precipitation wasn't intense enough to call the disturbance a tropical depression, the hurricane center said. At 39 mph it becomes a tropical storm, which could happen early Tuesday, according to hurricane center forecasts. Storm threatsIn the meantime, the hurricane center said, hurricane conditions are possible within 48 hours on the Cayman Islands.

Montana Republican Senate candidate Tim Sheehy struggled in a new interview to give a clear explanation about the circumstances surrounding an incident in a national park in 2015 that led to him being treated for a gunshot wound and receiving a fine. All accounts agree that, as first reported by the Washington Post this spring, Sheehy went to the hospital after his gun went off in Glacier National Park in 2015 (firing a weapon is illegal in a national park). The ranger said Sheehy told him he had accidentally shot himself in the arm, and Sheehy then went to the hospital for treatment. He was given a $525 ticket for the gun going off at Glacier National Park and paid it, he told the Post in April, to avoid an investigation into his unit. Kelly this week pressed Sheehy about any medical records that would help to confirm his account of what happened; Sheehy responded that those records do not exist.

Just 2% of voters say they’re unsure about the choice. Trump, meanwhile, leads among rural voters (75%-23%), white voters (56%-42%) and white voters without college degrees (64%-34%). This net gender gap of 34 points is larger than the 30-point gap in October’s NBC News poll. That’s a significant change from the final 2020 NBC News poll, when Biden was ahead of Trump by more than 20 points among these voters. The question for Ukraine is whether Kursk will fare better than Germany's Battle of the Bulge. AdvertisementWhen Ukraine unleashed its Kursk offensive in August, it wasn't just the Russians who were surprised. By massing forces for offensives in eastern Ukraine, this thinned out the rest of the 600-mile front line, including the Kursk region. For example, "Ukraine's military announced the 61st Mechanized Brigade would be moving to Vovchansk, a city in the northern sector of the fighting in eastern Ukraine," said TRADOC. In NBC News’ early October national survey, just 4% of registered voters said they didn’t want to make a choice between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. One said they plan to vote for Trump, another that they are likely to vote for Harris, and another plans to not vote at all. How anyone could still be undecided a week out from a critical election can be difficult to fathom for supporters of either Trump or Harris. Eric Bush, a systems administrator from Florida, said he’s waiting until he is in the voting booth to make his final choice. But he is still weighing backing Harris, acknowledging a vote for Harris could lead to bigger-government policies that could help others.

“There’s no white knight coming,” a federal law enforcement official told NBC News, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe the posture of federal authorities in the coming weeks, after Election Day. Law enforcement officials across the country said they believe the 2024 election will have a more sustained drumbeat of partisan rhetoric and disinformation than the 2020 election. The FBI has also set up a National Election Command Post at headquarters specifically to focus on election threats, as is standard practice in an election year. Two law enforcement officials expressed some concern that a federal response to any serious election issues could be chaotic and involve a “hodgepodge” of different state, local and federal law enforcement agencies and local election entities. Four other current and former law enforcement sources said they worried that disinformation and conspiracy theories could affect some segments of the law enforcement community, especially in parts of the country where Trump has significant support.
