☆ Delta Cancels More Flights as It Struggles to Recover From Tech Outage

Delta Air Lines canceled more than a thousand flights on Sunday, leading Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to single out the airline as it struggles to recover three days after a global software outage disrupted the aviation industry and grounded flights globally. Delta canceled about 1,300 flights on Sunday, roughly the same number as each of the previous two days, and delayed another 1,600, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. The tech outage on Friday hit airlines especially hard. A flawed update from CrowdStrike, whose software is used around the world, forced Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines to ground flights, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. It canceled about 1,200 flights each on Friday and Saturday, according to FlightAware, while cancellations for other airlines moderated into the hundreds or dozens.

CNN —Major airlines have filed a lawsuit against the federal government over new rules that would require carriers to disclose all airline fees — including those for checked and carry-on bags as well as change and cancelation fees — up front. The suit was filed Friday in the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court by carriers Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian, JetBlue, and United along with industry lobby Airlines For America. It alleges the Department of Transportation exceeded its authority in announcing the new rule, calling it an “arbitrary, capricious” change. “The ancillary fee rule by the Department of Transportation will greatly confuse consumers who will be inundated with information that will only serve to complicate the buying process,” lobby Airlines For America said in a statement. “DOT’s attempt to regulate private business operations in a thriving marketplace is beyond its authority.”The A4A statement adds: “The DOT ancillary rule is a bad solution in search of a problem.”DOT did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

CNN —Thirty-five rail cars of a train derailed in New Mexico Friday afternoon, prompting evacuations and forcing a 50-mile stretch of Interstate 40 to close. McKinley County Fire & Rescue was dispatched around 12:40 p.m. Friday after the train derailed and caught fire off Interstate 40 near the state line. Six of the derailed train cars were carrying propane, according to BNSF Railway. There is currently “no projected end to this closure,” said New Mexico State Police on Facebook. “I am deeply concerned about the train derailment along the Arizona-New Mexico border and am monitoring the situation closely,” Hobbs wrote.
