At the height of their careers, the Gao Brothers created provocative sculptures of Mao in a country notoriously sensitive about its former ruler’s legacy. Due to the “deteriorating environment” in China, Gao Zhen relocated to New York two years ago when his son, an American citizen born in the US, reached school age, Gao Qiang said. “Before he set off, his friends and family — myself included — had all reminded him to consider whether it was safe to go,” Gao Qiang said. “Our father’s death was a devastating disaster for our family.” Gao Zhen told the Southern People Weekly, a once-outspoken news outlet, in 2010. Gao Zhen’s detention shows that freedom of expression in China has shrunk significantly compared to a decade ago, Gao Qiang said.

BUCHAREST, Romania — A court in Romania’s capital Thursday placed the divisive internet influencer Andrew Tate under house arrest for 30 days, as prosecutors investigate a sprawling new case that involves allegations of human trafficking of minors and sex with a minor. Outside the court after the judge issued his house arrest measure, Andrew Tate told reporters that many of the alleged victims in the new case have statements in the Tate brother’s defense. After the Tate brothers’ arrest in December 2022, they were held for three months in police detention before being moved to house arrest. Last month, a court overturned an earlier decision that allowed the Tate brothers to leave Romania as they await trial. In March, the Tate brothers also appeared at the Bucharest Court of Appeal in a separate case, after British authorities issued arrest warrants over allegations of sexual aggression in a U.K. case dating back to 2012-2015.

Now, I love that my kids have an age difference of 23 months. But something that will bring them even closer together is that though they're almost two years apart, they're in back-to-back grades. My older son's birthday is in June, and my younger son's is in May; my oldest would be one of the younger kids in his class if we'd sent him to kindergarten when he was 5. He is more shy and reserved, so I do worry about him starting school at a younger age.
