It found that just 73% of Brits said work was either very or rather important to them, making the U.K. the country that is least likely to put work first. In the U.S., 75% of people said work is an important part of their life, putting the country in the fourth-lowest position. "Within the UK, there is a notable gender difference in responses, with men (28%) more likely than women (16%) to say work should always take priority," it noted. Only three countries are even less likely than the Brits to say work should not always come first: Australia, where 21% of people said this, Canada with 19% and Japan with 10%. This is in line with the countries' overall views on how important work is, the report said.

Packages of the weight-loss drug Wegovy from the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk lie on the sales counter in a Danish pharmacy. Novo Nordisk launched its Wegovy weight loss injection in the U.K. on Monday, advancing the drug's rollout in Europe despite ongoing supply constraints. The drug will also be available privately through a "registered healthcare professional," Novo Nordisk said in a statement, without adding further detail. Novo Nordisk declined to disclose the final price agreed with NHS England for the drug, but said that NICE, the U.K. drug cost-effectiveness watchdog, had described it as a "cost-effective use of NHS resources." British insurance company Aviva , which provides private health insurance to around 1.1 million Brits, on Monday said that Wegovy would not be covered under its policy, according to Reuters.

Why Brits don't tip
  + stars: | 2023-08-28 | by ( Sophie Kiderlin | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
While Americans are questioning if there are any places left they aren't expected to tip at, those in other countries are watching with confusion. "Most establishments will add a discretionary charge automatically," Laura Windsor, founder of an etiquette academy in the U.K., told CNBC Make It. If such a charge appears on your bill, there's no need to tip, although it's always an option. If a tip isn't automatically added, customers usually leave an extra 10-20% of the total bill for workers, Windsor said. But there are some circumstances in which Brits would never tip but Americans always would, Bryant pointed out.

Majorca, the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands, has been a classic summer destination for Europeans and Brits for decades. In the last few years, a number of artists and designers have left larger cities in Europe and moved to Majorca. For the first installment of our series of Flocking To travel guides, we asked four locals or frequent visitors to Majorca to share the places they love most. One word of advice for first-time visitors: Majorca sprawls across roughly 1,400 square miles (it’s about the size of Long Island), so if you’re planning on exploring, you might want to rent a car.

Businesses in food and parcel delivery often rely on large numbers of gig-economy workers. The UK's data watchdog found some of these workers are propositioning customers. "People have the right to order a pizza [...] without then being asked for sex," a watchdog said. A growing number of firms, particularly in delivery, transport, or logistics, rely on gig economy or contract workers. One consequence is that sensitive customer information, such as phone numbers and addresses, is accessible to casual workers.

More Brits than ever say Brexit was wrong choice: YouGov survey
  + stars: | 2023-07-17 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, July 18 (Reuters) - The proportion of Britons who say Brexit was a mistake hit a new record high this month, a survey from pollsters YouGov showed on Tuesday. With few economic benefits to show for the June 2016 vote to leave the European Union, 57% of Britons said the decision to leave the European Union in 2016 was the wrong one, compared with 32% who thought it was correct. More than half - 55% - said they would vote to rejoin the EU, against 31% who said they would stay out, if a referendum were to be held today. YouGov said the results marked a "moderate shift" from January 2021, when 49% said they would vote to rejoin and 37% to stay out. The YouGov survey of more than 2,000 British people showed 63% now regard Brexit as more of a failure than a success, compared with 12% who saw it as more of a success.

The answer is: The last battle of America’s war of independence was fought on this continent. DuVal and others say two key protagonists of the Revolutionary War – Britain and France – actually fought the final battle of the conflict in Cuddalore, India, in June of 1783. Britain and, to a lesser extent, France were well established with colonies in India when the American Revolution began and had already brought their hostilities from Europe to the subcontinent, according to the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. “They brought news that six months before in Paris, the British, French and the Americans – the Dutch were a little later – signed the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolution,” he says. “Cuddalore, India, was indeed the last battle of the American Revolution.”

For decades, his carefully honed media persona – part pseudo-intellectual; part loveable-but-out-of-touch-poshboy – won Johnson fans beyond the traditional Conservative base. Johnson attended a Parliament's Privileges Committee hearing, where he gave evidence on whether he deliberately misled parliament over Partygate. Stability in 10 Downing Street has allowed for better coordination on Ukraine, according to officials, and helped resolve a festering dispute over Northern Ireland trade rules. Ahead of the visit, Sunak cast his economic objectives as directly linked to the security agenda. When Biden met Sunak in San Diego earlier this year, he made reference to the condo the Stanford MBA graduate maintains in California. Yet that meeting was only a brief chat over tea; Biden spent most of his visit to Ireland exploring his ancestral roots.
