That mildly increases the chance of a bountiful U.S. corn crop, but a disaster cannot be ruled out. La Nina and its warm-phase cousin El Nino usually peak in strength during the U.S. winter. La Nina is on its third consecutive season, but its departure could be near. Although it varied greatly by state, U.S. farmers on average did not produce a stellar corn crop in 2022 due to drought in the west. Recent years where an early-year La Nina gave way to El Nino by year’s end include 2018, 2009 and 2006.
“It looks like a concentration camp,” Tapeba, a doctor appointed to the position by Brazil’s new government, said in a radio interview. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, left, visits the Yanomami Indigenous Health House (Casai) in the Boa Vista rural area, Roraima state, Brazil, on Saturday. “It’s an extreme calamity, many Yanomami are suffering from malnutrition and there is a total absence of the Brazilian state,” Tapeba said. This can only be resolved by removing the gold miners and that can only be done by the armed forces,” he said. Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered the removal of the gold miners.

Consumers armed with plenty of pandemic-induced pent-up demand and bountiful financial buffers kept the economy churning throughout much of 2022. “But I think there are reasonable worries that may not last.”Consumer spending remained resilient throughout much of 2022. But the household savings rate now sits at 2.4%, the lowest level since 2005 and the second-lowest rate going back more than 60 years. As of September 30, credit card delinquencies remained near historic lows with a 2.07% rate, according to Federal Reserve data. Persistently high inflation has consumers leaning more on credit cards and other forms of financing.
Companies reining in holiday bonuses

This year, economic uncertainty is bringing a chill to the holiday-season perk, according to survey data released Thursday by Challenger, Gray & Christmas. More than 81% of the 252 employers surveyed by the outplacement firm said they planned to freeze the value of holiday bonuses at the same level of last year, while a growing number of companies said they would forgo a bonus altogether. Nearly 27% of companies surveyed said they wouldn’t give a bonus, which is up from 23% in 2021. “We’re clearly seeing some softening in the labor market,” Andrew Challenger, senior vice president of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, told CNN. “We’ve been in the tightest labor market in modern American history [with] the lowest level of layoffs, the highest wage increases, the highest number of job openings, the highest number of jobs quit,” Challenger said.
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday offered investors a list of utility stocks he believes should be on their shopping lists. Stocks notched their second day of gains on Tuesday after new data showed that prices rose less than expected in November. Cramer advised investors to consider adding shares of "steady-eddy" utility companies to their portfolios for their dependability. Here are his top picks:Constellation EnergyThe nuclear-powered electric utility company, which was spun off from Exelon earlier this year, is the top performing utility stock so far this year. Cramer said he likes the stock because he believes nuclear energy is the best option for carbon-free energy production in a reasonable timeframe.
Yuichiro Chino | Moment | Getty ImagesU.S. curbs on chip exports to China are the latest shakeup prompting companies to consider moving some of their chipmaking capabilities to nearby Vietnam and India. In October, the U.S. began requiring companies to obtain licenses to export advanced semiconductors or related manufacturing equipment to China. Shift from China to AsiaThe curbs are the latest in a series of upheavals for the $600 billion global semiconductor industry. China firmly in the leadDespite Asia's rising attractiveness for chipmakers, experts point out that China still maintains a lead over regional economies in terms of its competitiveness in chipmaking. In its "Made in China 2025" blueprint released in 2015, the country laid the groundwork for technological self-sufficiency in chipmaking.
Those who fought this trend abandoned Twitter, hired bodyguards and tried to hide from the angry mob that was attempting to will stocks higher by savaging the sellers. As a result, they overran their brains and outsourced them to others who claimed to know more than they did. My point is this: The crypto con and the Robinhood dollar conflagration can't produce enough money to buoy stocks. We will hold Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOGL) and Amazon , even as we've trimmed them higher. The EPA in 2021 proposed re-listing the Salt Lake City area as in “attainment” for small particle pollution it had been failing to sufficiently control. But wildfires and dust storms off Great Salt Lake are erasing the progress that has been made. “I’ve received a number of emails from concerned citizens reconsidering living in Salt Lake City,” said Janice Brahney, an assistant professor at Utah State University’s watershed sciences department. Meanwhile, researchers found the highest levels of dust — and metals — in suburbs outside urban Salt Lake City. Researchers suspect suburban communities north of Salt Lake City could be receiving the majority of the dust that blows off the lake.
The mall where Black Friday refuses to die

“Wonderful things,” Carter responded, which seems a rather restrained reaction: What he’d found was the tomb of King Tutankhamun, one of a handful of the most significant and bountiful discoveries in the unearthing of the ancient world. In “Tutankhamun: Allies & Enemies,” a two-part exploration of its own, one prominent Egyptologist interviewed says that Carter’s find was all about “luck”—never mind the single-minded 15-year search he’d undertaken with Carnarvon’s money. But what becomes evident in this Egyptian production is that Egyptians are, perhaps rightfully, possessive of Tut, and that one of the wonderful things about the show is how few of the experts agree about much. Was Tut’s death the result of a fall, a plague, a pileup at a chariot race or plain old political murder? Everyone asked has an opinion, all of them supported by research, even DNA evidence.
The dramatic decline follows bumper bonuses in 2021, which resulted in record pay. Last year was especially bountiful, thanks to record M&A and IPO dealmaking, which led to bonuses not seen since before the Great Recession. But this year, compensation consulting firm Johnson Associates predicts, bonuses will drop by as much as 45% amid a drought in Wall Street's main business of IPOs and M&A. Meanwhile, those in advisory positions of investment banks won't be as scathed as their underwriter colleagues — the analysis predicts bonuses down 15% to 20%. The analysis predicts their awards could be 15% to 20% more than last year.
Following Wednesday's trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will own 125 shares of PXD, increasing its weighting in the portfolio to 1.13% from 0.90%. Energy stocks pulled back Wednesday, as oil prices tumbled on the back of a higher-than-expected crude inventory build in the U.S., according to data from the American Petroleum Institute. West Texas Intermediate crude — the U.S. oil benchmark — was trading down more than 2%, at around $87 a barrel. The SPR will also need to be refilled eventually, which should be bullish for oil prices. Elevated energy prices will translate to bountiful free cash flow generation for Pioneer, ultimately leading to very healthy shareholder returns.

Extreme weather could push food inflation even higher

But as extreme weather events increase in frequency or become even more intense, the unpredictability is becoming more of an economic liability. “And those higher costs are being passed on to consumers.” The rise in food prices is one of the key factors fueling inflation, according to recent CPI data. Extreme weather also can negatively affect companies’ bottom lines, according to research from Paul Griffin, professor of management at UC Davis. Corn crops that died due to extreme heat and drought during a heatwave in Austin, Texas, on Monday, July 11, 2022. Still, the very prospect of more extreme weather could further sap away groundwater and limit the cultivation potential in the future, Smith said.
