CNN —The Greek Islands, known for their idyllic towns, rugged landscapes and sun-baked beaches, are in the grip of a serious crisis. “They combine lack of water resources — shallow aquifers, rare rivers or dams — with a tremendous rise in water demand during summer,” he told CNN. Kottakis blamed the crisis on Leros on a failure to maintain the island’s two desalination units, which are both in disrepair. Tourism is “unsustainable and zero-planned,” which is leading to a tremendous rise in water demand, said Mylopoulos, the university professor. Multiple wildfires raged and at least six tourists, including British TV presenter and doctor Michael Moseley and an American tourist, died as high temperatures scorched the Greek islands.

Read previewWarning: Spoilers ahead for "House of the Dragon" season two, episode six. "House of the Dragon" hasn't been shy about taking some liberties with its source material. The HBO hit, based on the fictional House Targaryen history book "Fire and Blood" by "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin, made its biggest departure from the book so far back in season one when it changed the fate of Laenor Velaryon. This is a much happier ending for Laenor, but it leaves one major loose thread: his dragon, Seasmoke.

The tent fragment came with a note saying it was taken from George Washington's tent that was on display in 1907. TROON, Scotland — Xander Schauffele was for so long the best golfer without a major. The ever-steady 30-year-old star never topped the Open leaderboard Thursday to Saturday, always quietly lurking in the top 10 before shooting a Sunday 65 to win the 152nd Open Championship for his second major title in three starts. For the first time since 1982, Americans — Schauffele (Open Championship, PGA Championship), Scottie Scheffler (Masters) and Bryson DeChambeau (U.S. Open) — have claimed all four major championships. Sunday began with Horschel, a 37-year-old seeking his first major championship, in the lead by one stroke, playing in the final group of a major’s final round for the first time. Now Schauffele enters the Olympics and the rest of the season no longer an admirable player who can’t win.

Israeli jets strike Houthi targets in Yemen after Tel Aviv attack

A giant fire erupts at an oil storage facility following Israeli strikes in Yemen's Houthi-held port city of Hodeida on July 20, 2024. Israeli warplanes struck the Houthi-controlled Yemeni port of Hodeida on July 20, a day after a drone attack by the Houthi rebels killed a civilian in Tel Aviv, both sides said. Israeli fighter jets struck Houthi military targets near Yemen's Hodeidah port on Saturday, killing at least three people and wounding 87, a day after a drone launched by the Iranian-backed group hit Israeli economic hub Tel Aviv. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the Houthis "will not hesitate to strike vital targets of the Israeli enemy." On Friday, a long-range Iranian-made drone launched from Yemen hit the center of Tel Aviv in an attack claimed by the Houthis, killing one man and wounding four others.

The Israeli bombing of a vital Yemeni port controlled by the Houthi militia is not expected to deter the group from further attacks but is likely to deepen human suffering in Yemen, regional experts said. Israeli officials said the barrage of airstrikes that hit the Red Sea port city of Hudaydah on Saturday was a counterattack after the Houthis launched a drone that struck Tel Aviv on Friday, killing one Israeli and wounding several others. Photos and videos from Hudaydah showed an enormous fire at the city’s port that sent black smoke billowing into the sky. The port is the main conduit by which food imports, fuel and aid enter the impoverished northern Yemen. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, Israel’s military spokesman, said that Israel carried out the bombardment “in order to stop the Houthi’s terror attacks” and that it had hit “dual-use" targets including energy infrastructure.

CNN —Billy Horschel will carry the slenderest of leads into the final 18 holes of the Open Championship in Scotland, as the American capitalized on Shane Lowry’s grisly slide to edge clear in a rain-soaked third round. I’m embracing it,” Horschel, whose career best major performance was a tied-fourth finish at the 2013 US Open, told reporters. Lowry's round went downhill after trouble at the 'coffin' bunker on the eighth hole. Stuart Franklin/R&A/Getty ImagesHaving taken a three shot advantage to the eighth tee, the 37-year-old will start the final round three strokes adrift of leader Horschel, and one back from world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who shot even-par 71 to stay in contention for a second major title of the season.

Gigacasting is a form of die-casting — pouring materials like molten aluminum into large molds to form parts. For example, the front and rear portions of the early Model 3 chassis each contained more than 70 parts, according to Tesla. Reducing weight ultimately means more range for the customer, and substituting one large megacast for dozens of stamped parts reduces labor and boosts production, he said. Severinson views repair as a solvable challenge: "There is a solution to repairing also a casted rear floor," he said. Burns and Volk say that might be a sign that the company is hitting some technical limits.

The past few years have solidified single-family rental homes as genuine moneymaking enterprises, not just ho-hum nest eggs. Related storiesWhen everyone was scrambling for their piece of the suburbs during the pandemic, mom-and-pop landlords pounced, using these newfound tools to collect more cash. The company, which estimates only one-fourth of single-family-rental landlords use professional management services, now manages more than 28,000 rentals on behalf of small landlords. As the Wall Street ethos trickles down to small rental owners, it'll be harder and harder to tell them apart. But the gap is narrowing as small rental owners capitalize on the innovations that the institutional class has already embraced.

CNN —The CIA has assessed that the leader of Hamas in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, is coming under increased pressure from his own military commanders to accept a ceasefire deal and end the war with Israel, CIA Director Bill Burns told a closed-door conference on Saturday, according to a source who attended. The increased pressure on Sinwar comes as Hamas and Israel have agreed to a framework deal that that President Joe Biden laid out at the end of May. That’s what US officials have said is being used as the basis to an agreement to end the fighting. I just assumed that Nashville was part of the great temperate deciduous forests that once covered much of the eastern half of the United States. When I went looking for the once-endangered Tennessee coneflower in 2019, I found them in a rocky glade surrounded by grasslands blooming with wildflowers. And if there are grasslands here now, surely there must have been grasslands here in the past. Today nearly all those Southern prairies — along with nearly all the other types of Southern grassland ecosystems, and nearly all the plants and animals they supported — are gone. In a study published in 2021, a team of scientists including Dr. Estes identified 118 major types of grassland ecosystems in the South.
