UK councils call for ban on disposable vapes by 2024

LONDON, July 15 (Reuters) - Councils in England and Wales have called on the UK government to ban the sale of single use vapes by 2024 on both environmental and health grounds. The LGA said 1.3 million disposable vapes were thrown away every week. The LGA said councils were also concerned about the impact vaping was having upon children and young people. "Disposable vapes are fundamentally flawed in their design and inherently unsustainable products, meaning an outright ban will prove more effective than attempts to recycle more vapes," David Fothergill, Chairman of the LGA's Community Wellbeing Board, said. The UK Vaping Industry Association defended disposable vapes.

‘Wham!’ Review: They Made It Big, Then Broke Up

The new documentary about George Michael, Andrew Ridgeley and the music they made as Wham! — it’s just called “Wham!” — found me in a moment of need for a nostalgic, fantastical elixir, something short, sweet and tangential to my feeling of national blues. For one thing, Wham!, the duo, made soul music that popped. And the movie dances past all of the thorny moral and ethical questions of white people making Black stuff. The disembodied voices of Michael and Ridgeley guide the whole thing — rumination and memory as narration.

Sands had been promoting his latest role in a BBC radio drama “The Willows,” when the conversation turned to his upcoming climbing trip. “My version of LA isn’t swimming pools and parties … It’s rattlesnakes, bears, cougars, mountains,” he said during the interview. The Yorkshireman said climbing was about finding “solace” and “self-affirmation,” Radio Times reported. Human remains found in the area June 24 have since been declared to be those of the actor.

Orkney's historic Nordic connections give it options, Stockan believes. A row over funding for new ferries between the islands and Scotland has brought Orkney's situation to a head. CNN —Stanley Tucci weighed in on the debate about straight actors portraying gay characters in a new interview with BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs on Saturday. Tucci, who is married to literary agent Felicity Blunt, said he believes that as an actor, “you’re supposed to play different people.”“You just are. Tucci has portrayed gay characters in 2006’s “The Devil Wears Prada” and in the 2020 film “Supernova” alongside Oscar-winner Colin Firth. “Because often, it’s not done the right way.”For decades, Hollywood has cast actors in heterosexual relationships for gay roles. The song will also feature the voice of the late George Harrison, Starr confirmed. Online money transfer firm Wise's shares soared nearly 18% Tuesday as the company reported a spike in profits thanks to rising interest income. The company said in a statement to the stock market that its profit before tax tripled to £146.5 million ($186.5 million). Wise benefited from surging interest rates, which last week were raised by the Bank of England to 5% as policymakers grapple with persistently high inflation. Like other fintechs, Wise has been able to accrue income from interest on funds sitting in customer accounts. Overall income reported by the firm rose to £964.2 million, up 73% year-on-year.

Mortgage painThe announcement comes a day after the Bank of England raised interest rates by half a percentage point to help bring down stubborn inflation. More than 2 million UK mortgage holders paying a fixed interest rate are facing an increase of hundreds of pounds in monthly repayments when they are forced to refinance this year and next. Many borrowers bought their homes when mortgage rates were closer to 1% or 2%. That sets the country apart from other major economies, including the United States, where on both measures inflation has started to ease. After the latest rise in interest rates Thursday, Hunt said the government would “stick to [its] guns” on keeping rates high to tame high prices.

CNN —When it comes to artificial intelligence, Sir Paul McCartney doesn’t sound like he’s willing to just “Let It Be.”In an interview with BBC Radio 4’s “Today” program released Tuesday, the legendary musician and former Beatle was asked about AI and how it’s been used to make his voice sound younger – and to resurrect the voices of fellow band members John Lennon and George Harrison who died in 1980 and 2001, respectively. And he revealed there’s a “new” Beatles tune coming, thanks to the technology. “When we came to make what will be the last Beatles record – it was a demo that John had that we worked on and we just finished it up, it will be released this year – and we were able to take John’s voice and get it pure through this AI,” McCartney said. “So then we were able to mix the record as you would normally do.”While McCartney’s not on the internet much, he said, he’s aware of AI being used to do things like have Lennon sing one of his songs – which he said was “kind of scary.”“It’s something we’re all sort of tackling at the moment and trying to deal with,” McCartney said. According to McCartney, AI was used to isolate Lennon’s voice from a demo track for the Peter Jackson directed 2021 docuseries “The Beatles: Get Back” about the making of the Beatles’ 1970 album “Let It Be.”There’s “a good side and a scary side” to AI, McCartney said, so “we’ll just have to see where that leads.”

Palantir's boss Alex Karp opposes the idea of a pause in artificial intelligence research, in contrast to an open letter from the Future of Life Institute signed by some of the biggest names in the tech industry. The letter, which has garnered over 31,000 signatures including names like Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, called for a pause on AI research on models larger than GPT-4, which powers tools such as ChatGPT. The letter also said that if "such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium." Speaking to BBC Radio in an interview broadcast Thursday, Karp said he is of the view that "many of the people asking for a pause, are asking for a pause because they have no product." To him, "studying this and allowing other people to win both on commercial areas and on the battlefield" is a really bad strategy.
