Part of the military's mission at home is to keep stockpiles of goods like critical minerals on hand for emergency wartime use. The Biden administration began cutting American imports of Chinese rare earth minerals a few years ago in an effort to decrease US reliance on China for critical minerals. ☆ AeroVironment CEO describes how drones are the future of modern warfare

In a Thursday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, AeroVironment CEO Wahid Nawabi described how the defense contractor's drones are used in battle, saying the technology will be a significant part of modern warfare. "The fundamental shift in warfare is that distributed intelligent robotic systems, loitering munitions, small drones — that's what we specialize in — is going to be a much bigger piece of the warfare in the future," he said. Nawabi discussed weapons including the Switchblade 600 — a kamikaze-type drone — and the Puma AE, which is primarily used for surveillance. The former is unique because it is able to "loiter" for 40 minutes to find a target, he said. According to Nawabi, the U.S. Army plans to buy more than a thousand Switchblade 600s as part of the Pentagon's latest initiative.

The US and Germany have already sent Patriot systems to Ukraine, but the Biden administration has made it clear that Kyiv needs more as Russia continues to launch aerial attacks on the country. It is unclear how long the process of finalizing details and transferring the systems to Ukraine would take. In April, the Israel Defense Forces said it would soon retire its Patriot systems, which were first fully integrated into the military in 1991. But the Patriot missiles is not Israel’s primary air defense system. Israel relies far more on its short-range Iron Dome aerial defense system, as well as its medium-range David’s Sling and long-range Arrow missiles.
