In today's big story, we're looking at what a hotter-than-expected inflation report means for markets and the econom y . That silver lining doesn’t address the elephant in the room: What does the latest CPI data mean for interest rates? AdvertisementMadison Hoff/Noah Sheidlower/Business InsiderThe hot inflation report comes just a few weeks after some industry experts felt the market was in a perfect position. Stubbornly elevated inflation means Powell might be less willing to cut rates and risk further fueling inflation. It’s particularly painful for smaller companies, which tend to carry floating-rate debt more susceptible to elevated interest rates.

The latest yet-to-be-released Apple Vision Pro avatars are already looking more like actual people. The tech giant released a beta update of visionOS 1.1 for developers on Tuesday, and it offered an early look at improved avatars, or "Personas" as Apple calls them, for Vision Pro users. Apple's Personas feature is itself labeled as a beta feature for now, which means the company is still tinkering with that specific feature. Separately, Apple releases beta versions of its wider software for its various devices, such as iOS for iPhones and visionOS for the Vision Pro, to developers ahead of a wider release (that's the notification you eventually get under your device's "Settings" asking you to update). Videos being shared across social media this week depict an almost dystopian, futuristic scene: drivers of Teslas in Autopilot mode while wearing Apple Vision Pro headsets, seemingly unaware of the road in front of them. The videos led federal transportation officials to issue warnings. But are people really mindlessly riding around in Teslas in Autopilot mode, wearing Apple’s futuristic new goggles? Several of the videos taken in cars appear staged, and in many, it is clear that someone other than the driver is recording. Still, they seemed reckless enough for Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary, to weigh in on social media.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday told investors why it's hard to generalize about consumer behavior, saying that as inflation continues, there's a stark divide between cash-strapped consumers and ones that are flush. "High rates may not be helping, but they aren't hurting yet either, right now at least," he said. "In the meantime, we've got a bifurcated consumer in this country, and until you understand that, nothing in this market will make sense at all, let alone the inequality that comes with it." Cramer took McDonald's mixed earnings report as an example of the consumer divide. The fast-food giant's CEO Chris Kempczinski discussed how the low-income consumer cohort is a "battle ground" as many trade down to deal with higher costs.
