WASHINGTON—The discovery of classified documents in an office used by President Biden after he left the vice presidency has brought attention, and House Republican scrutiny, to a little-known Washington think tank where Mr. Biden had set up operations in between his posts in the White House. The Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, located in a building with a commanding view of the U.S. Capitol, was a key element of Mr. Biden’s initial plans for his post-government career, sketched out in part by his son, Hunter Biden . The elder Mr. Biden and university leaders envisioned it as a place to convene foreign-policy thinkers, spur debates on global affairs, develop leaders and plan speeches and events, according to their public remarks.

WASHINGTON—President Biden plans to commemorate the second anniversary of the Jan. 6 riot by giving medals to law-enforcement officers who protected lawmakers that day and election officials who resisted efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential contest. Recipients are to include former Arizona House Speaker Russell “Rusty” Bowers , a Republican who lost his seat in an August primary after resisting pressure from President Donald Trump to hold a hearing in the state that could have led to changing election results. Mr. Biden also plans to posthumously recognize Brian Sicknick , a Capitol Police officer who died the day after the attack.

WASHINGTON—The White House is strongly considering adding a visit to the U.S.-Mexico border to President Biden’s trip to Mexico City next week, according to people familiar with the discussions. Mr. Biden is expected to meet Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Mexico City for the North American Leaders’ Summit on Jan. 9-10. A final decision hasn’t yet been made on whether Mr. Biden would make what would be his first visit to the border as president as part of the trip, the people said. One of the people said there would be no new policy announcement at the event if it occurs.
WASHINGTON—President Biden is set to enter the third year of his presidency with more than two dozen ambassador slots unfilled, including vacancies in the strategically important countries of India and Saudi Arabia, despite a late surge of confirmations this past month. The White House is on track to have more top foreign representatives in place than former President Donald Trump did at this point in his term, but fewer than former presidents George W. Bush or Barack Obama . Leaving posts open could reduce U.S. influence and make it more difficult for the president to put his stamp on foreign policy, at a moment when countries increasingly feel pressure to pick sides in the intensifying rivalry between the U.S. and China.
WASHINGTON—The Internal Revenue Service has completed two audits of President Biden’s tax returns since he took office in 2021, but records released this week show it has not finished any audits of Donald Trump from his time in the White House, prompting Democrats to call for mandating annual scrutiny and disclosure of presidential tax filings. For tax year 2020, the IRS determined that Mr. Biden and his wife, Jill, were owed an additional refund, White House spokesman Andrew Bates said. For 2021, which the Bidens filed in April 2022, the couple paid an extra $13 after the audit, Mr. Bates said.
A top Biden economist said the president is looking to fix the labor shortage by making it easier to get back to work. That includes giving people childcare options and lowering "costs for consumers." Deese is also referencing the high inflation that the Federal Reserve is fighting to curb, and that Americans are struggling to keep up with, adding that the White House will potentially take administrative actions to reduce the price of housing. Deese was not specific about what White House economists' plans would be beyond that, but he suggested childcare was key to making sure that parents would be able to work. Such provisions may be hard for Biden to pull off after losing control of the House to Republicans this year.
Brian Deese of the National Economic Council says it is focusing on increasing the economy’s productive potential. WASHINGTON—Top White House economic officials are considering a renewed push for a suite of policies aimed at luring more Americans back to work, including enhanced child- care and eldercare benefits, as they hammer out priorities for the coming year. The question of how to find enough workers has emerged as a significant issue as the country emerges from the pandemic, with a smaller share of adults working or looking for work than in early 2020. White House economic officials expect to brief President Biden on their thoughts over the holiday break as the administration shapes its agenda for 2023 and plans for Mr. Biden’s State of the Union address.
