Read previewThe idea that Christopher Colombus brought back syphilis from the New World might be completely wrong. Interim Archives/Getty ImagesThe timing of the arrival of syphilis in Europe is suspiciousLooking at historical literature, you would think syphilis definitely arrived with the conquistadors. There was a big outbreak of syphilis in Europe in the late 1400s, mostly in harbor towns, seemingly out of the blue. But another huge upset of the 96th Academy Award nods was the lack of recognition for "The Color Purple" remake. The Color Purple was going to be snubbed whether Taraji spoke out or not because a lot of the noms were voted on prior. Instead of negative press, "The Color Purple," among other contenders, was likely affected by different factors, including the SAG-AFTRA strike and its Christmas release. "By waiting until December to release 'The Color Purple,' they were late to the conversation," he added.

Here is a look at Sweden's complicated path toward NATO membership. Sweden has stayed out of military alliances for more than 200 years and long ruled out seeking NATO membership. But the Russian aggression caused a dramatic shift in both countries, with polls showing a surge in support for NATO membership. That leaves Hungary as the last hurdle for Sweden's NATO bid. Not surprisingly, Moscow reacted negatively to Sweden and Finland's decision to abandon nonalignment and seek NATO membership, and warned of unspecified countermeasures.

Known as "border radio," the unregulated American radio industry sprung up on Mexico's northern border in the 1930s. Hank Thompson, another country music star who grew up in Waco in the 30s, said border radio stations were the only stations where one could listen to country music most of the time. But the legacy of border radio stations continued to live on in the country music they helped popularize, as well as its cousin genres. According to American honky-tonk star Webb Pierce, country music "might not have survived if it hadn't been for border radio."

While Fewer Americans Have High Cholesterol, Too Many Still Do

By Cara Murez HealthDay Reporter(HealthDay)WEDNESDAY, Nov. 1, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- Despite progress in recent decades, too many Americans still have dangerously high LDL cholesterol levels, and about a quarter don't even know it, new research finds. Of course, you can only start treatment for high cholesterol if you know your cholesterol numbers are high. “That's why it's absolutely imperative that everybody should get their cholesterol checked and they should know their numbers,” Virani said. Being unaware and untreated for high cholesterol disproportionately affected Black, Hispanic and poorer people. “Clinicians have a lot of options to treat these patients and make sure that both their quality and quantity of life is not compromised just because of these high LDL cholesterol levels,” Virani said.
