Apple's third-generation Airpods "haven't sold particularly well," Bloomberg reports. Apple's AirPods are undoubtedly a hit, however, making up a large share of the 2022 headphone market. AdvertisementAdvertisementIt sounds like the third-generation AirPods haven't quite been the runaway hit Apple was hoping for. The newer AirPods will reportedly come with USB-C charging, similar to the iPhone 15 and the AirPods Pro 2nd generation. The AirPods Pro and Max will also get an update further into the future.

A new Apple Watch Ultra 2 is displayed during the 'Wonderlust' event at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California, U.S. September 12, 2023. Masimo's 2021 complaint said the 2020 Apple Watch Series 6, the first model with blood-oxygen monitoring capabilities, infringed its patents. Apple has since shifted some of its Apple Watch production to Vietnam. Irvine, California-based Masimo has accused Apple of stealing its technology and incorporating it into several Apple Watch models. Apple is also facing an Apple Watch import ban in a separate patent dispute with medical technology company AliveCor.

Apple plans to release new versions of several AirPods models next year, according to a report from Bloomberg. Apple's wireless headphones business has become a moneymaker for the company and requires regular updates to keep the product fresh and demand high. Since they were first announced in 2016, Apple's wireless white buds have become ubiquitous on big-city mass transit and inside offices and schools around the country. Apple's AirPods Pro, which cost $249, got minor updates last year, and this fall added a model with a USB-C port. Apple reports AirPods sales under its Wearables, Home and Accessories product line, which reported $41 billion in revenue in Apple's fiscal 2022.

Apple wants to cut its ties with chip designer Qualcomm but despite years of work and billions of dollars, the company hasn’t been able to build a wireless chip in-house. WSJ reporter Aaron Tilley joins host Zoe Thomas to explain Apple’s spectacular failure in this effort. Many Apple customers may not be familiar with Luxshare Precision or its leader Grace Wang, but they likely own its handiwork. Along with other Apple contractors, Luxshare manufactures AirPods, the Apple Watch and the recently released iPhone 15, including the top-of-the-line iPhone Pro Max. CNN —Apple (AAPL) quietly announced its next-generation Pencil that works with iPads and now includes USB-C charging. The change comes nearly a month after Apple retired its Lightning charger, a milestone moment toward universal charging amid pressure from EU regulators. Like previous models, the third-generation Apple Pencil is intended for taking notes, sketching and marking up documents. The price is $79, down $20 from the second-generation Apple Pencil and $50 less than the original. At its iPhone 15 event in September, the company announced all of its next-generation smartphones and new AirPods Pro will launch with USB-C charging.

37 people joined a class action lawsuit against Apple over stalkers using AirTags to track them. The lawsuit, filed last year by two women, claimed Apple AirTags had been used by stalkers to track the location of their victims. "One of the most dangerous and frightening technologies employed by stalkers is the use of real-time location information to track victims," the lawsuit says. Others have also used AirTags to plot car thefts. The lawsuit claims that "individuals have been murdered — or murdered others — when using AirTags to track stolen property and confront thieves."

Amazon 's fall Prime deals bonanza "outpaced" last year's event, the company said Thursday, as discount-hungry consumers got an early jump on holiday shopping. It marks the second year Amazon has held the shopping event, which is a fall follow-up to the company's main Prime Day sale held in July. "Prime Big Deal Days was a strong start to the holiday shopping season, offering Prime members an exclusive early opportunity to save and surpassing our expectations," Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, said in a statement. "This event outpaced last year's holiday kick-off event, with more Prime members shopping this year." Amazon typically uses its discount events for Prime members to run promotions on its devices.

Apple might be headquartered in Cupertino but its heart is in China. AdvertisementAdvertisementApple's leadership may operate from the 175-acre, tree-covered campus in sunny Cupertino, California but, in reality, the company's center of gravity is in China. Roughly 95% of Apple products including iPhones, AirPods, Macs and iPads are reported to be made in China . And multiple media outlets reported that China had banned iPhones for government staffers, knocking its share price. Apple CEO Tim Cook likes to present the company's decades-long involvement with China as a cause for celebration.

The country is tightening restrictions on the app store that would eliminate a popular loophole. AdvertisementAdvertisementChina could soon crack down on a major loophole in its "Great Firewall" that allows its citizens using Apple's App Store to access some otherwise forbidden apps. Social media apps like X, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube are at risk of being unavailable on the Chinese version of Apple's App Store as part of the restriction. China is one of Apple's biggest markets, only falling behind the US in sales. It accounted for about $74 billion of Apple's revenue in the full year to September 2022, Insider previously reported.

REUTERS/Ann Wang/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBEIJING, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) Chinese supplier Luxshare Precision Industry (002475.SZ) is producing three models of iPhone 15 series this year, and the business has doubled in a year, Luxshare's chairwoman said on Thursday. Luxshare has increased the production types and numbers of Apple's iPhone products in recent years, Wang added. "Luxshare is continuing to expand its production capacity in China to meet Apple's needs," Wang said, adding the company built a new plant in Kunshan last year to support the development and mass production of iPhone. "The fact that Luxshare Precision can have this scale this year is inseparable from Apple's support," Wang told the Paper. Founded in 2004, Luxshare became an Apple supplier in 2011 and has steadily moved up the hardware giant's value chain, from making connector cables for the iPhone and Macbook to manufacturing Airpods.

CNN —Apple retired its Lightning charger on Tuesday exactly 11 years to the day it was first announced. The EU’s decision is part of a greater effort to tackle e-waste overall, but could it generate more in the short term as people phase out their Lightning cables. But knockoffs abound, and some USB-C chargers are much safer than others. Among CNN Underscored’s top recommendations for USB-C chargers are from big brands, including Anker, Belkin, Apple, Amazon and Google. Retiring the Lightning cable could even generate, in the short term, a surge of e-waste as iPhone users toss their useless Lightning cables in a drawer.
