Prior to the company’s demise, it had looked like Europe was poised for something of a night train revolution. Despite this demand, the hurdles for startups like Midnight Train trying to enter the market to meet it remain virtually insurmountable. Formidable obstaclesEuropean Sleeper is one of the few new night train operators to begin services, but the company has struggled to find rolling stock. “Politicians must be clear: the night train market will be effectively closed for a very long time,” he says. With the honorable exception of Nightjet, which plans to expand rapidly over the next five years, European night train services have yet to match the hype.

The Biden administration is fighting to overcome opposition from allied nations and the tech industry as it prepares to expand restrictions aimed at slowing China’s ability to make the most advanced semiconductors, which could be used to bolster Beijing’s military capacity. The rules are aimed at blocking off some of the newer routes that Chinese chipmakers have found to acquire technology, despite international restrictions. The United States has been pushing allies like Japan and the Netherlands to toughen their restrictions on technology shipments to China, during visits to those countries as well as a Japanese state visit to Washington in April. Those nations are home to companies that produce chip-making machinery, like ASML Holding N.V. and Tokyo Electron Limited. But industry in the United States and other countries has argued the rules could hurt them, and it remains unclear when or if foreign governments will issue limitations.

In a fitting end to my athletic career, my husband and I got married after competing together on the college triathlon team. As our family continues to grow and change, we maintain a team-oriented approach that strengthens our bond in several ways. We continue to practice and improveSince we're still pretty new to the parenting game, we don't have much training under our belts. But hard things become easier with practice, something that my husband and I understand after years of athletics. Back when we were competing, my husband and I devoted extra time to our mental and physical well-being.

Kave and fellow American ex-pat Jennifer Crain are the co-founders of Abricot, a cocktail bar in Paris' 10th arrondissement. The bar has a small staff: three hourly employees and three contract employees. A mutual connection virtually introduced Kave and Crain shortly after, and the pair started expanding Crain's idea for a Parisian cocktail bar. They found a location and named their business Abricot, which is French slang for female genitalia. The delays ate up most of the initial investment, Crain says, as Abricot paid rent for over a year before it opened.

Bitcoin was no exception to Monday's broad market rout, which gives investors a good buying opportunity, according to analysts. The flagship cryptocurrency dropped 11% over the three days ending Monday, according to Coin Metrics, pulling down the performance of stocks related to it. "As a reminder, Bitcoin historically has very strong returns in the one-year period post halving," Brett Knoblauch, an analyst at Cantor Fitzgerald, said in a note Monday. Cantor has overweight ratings on eight mining stocks, including Riot Platforms , CleanSpark , Iris Energy , Core Scientific and Cipher Mining . Knoblauch said Riot Platforms, one of the largest of the mining stocks, has the best liquidity and one of the cheapest all-in costs to mine bitcoin.

Mr. Shah led a buyout of Ziff Davis, a century-old magazine publisher whose titles chronicled the early tech boom, in 2010. The company was then acquired by J2 Global, which Mr. Shah eventually split into two pieces. One company, Ziff Davis, kept well-known publishing brands like Mashable, and the other kept a fax provider called eFax. But Mr. Shah said that he believed additional deals like the one for CNET would increase its profits. Mr. Shah said he decided to acquire CNET partly because it is well-known industry brand, and its sizable audience will give Ziff Davis greater clout with advertisers looking to reach tech consumers.

According to public announcements, the firm has made four acquisition deals so far in 2024, exactly even with Nvidia's 2020 deal total. Nvidia declined to discuss its acquisition strategy for this report, citing a quiet period before it announces earnings on August 28. In May, Nvidia agreed to acquire Deci AI, another Israeli startup that makes tools for developers to build AI models, for $300 million. In July Nvidia competitor AMD announced an agreement to acquire Silo AI, a Finnish AI startup, for $655 million. And this quiet trickle of deals in various forms is unlikely to stop since the market for AI talent is so tight.

Read previewChinese scientists claim that it's possible to destroy satellites — including SpaceX's Starlink system — using lasers mounted on submarines. Chinese researchers envision the solution as flotillas of mass-produced laser subs that could be dispatched to oceans around the world. They would wait for tracking data from other non-submarine platforms to determine when a target satellite is overhead. In addition to destroying satellites, these subs could also blast aircraft or land targets such as radars and oil refineries. Laser subs could also shield China's ballistic missile submarines from detection.

Earlier this week, another product contending for the future of AI companionship made its debut: an eavesdropping necklace called Friend. AdvertisementSchiffmann's original vision for an AI hardware device was a pendant that would act as a more standard-fare AI assistant called Tab — he once described it as a "wearable mom." Of the many AI hardware devices that launched in recent months, such as Humane's AI pin, Meta's smart glasses, and Rabbit's AI-powered R1, Friend is the most personal contender. In fact, on the day Friend launched, a competing AI hardware founder named Nik Shevchenko released a diss track — as any self-respecting 23-year-old AI hardware founder would do — insinuating that Schiffmann stole his idea. (It would not be the first time that Shevchenko built an open source competitor that closely resembled another AI hardware device.

He also said it would be his policy to keep 100% of the bitcoin the U.S. government currently holds (about 210,000 bitcoins), serving as the beginning of a National Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. CNN —Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that the United States’ and Germany’s decision to deploy US long-range missiles in Germany from 2026 is “reminiscent of the events of the Cold War” and could see Russia station similar missiles in response. Putin said that the US and Germany’s decision to begin “episodic deployments” of the long-range missile capabilities from its Multi-Domain Task Force in Germany starting in 2026 would put Russian infrastructure within the reach of the to-be-deployed missiles. “This situation is reminiscent of the events of the Cold War related to the deployment of Pershing medium-range missiles in Europe,” he said. Pershing II missiles, designed to deliver nuclear warheads, were deployed by the US Army at American bases in West Germany from 1983 to the alarm of the then Soviet leadership. They were withdrawn with the introduction of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) in 1988.

If you ask Zaslav, though, the reason Roberts and other potential buyers of media assets aren't interested is because the government has scared them away. Or, perhaps, legacy media companies are simply undesirable assets to own. He extended the life of his previous company, Discovery Communications — and probably his own tenure running a media company — by merging it with AT&T's WarnerMedia in 2022. Without a deal, Discovery would have wallowed as a subscale content provider and owner of declining cable networks. Italian bank UniCredit on Wednesday posted better-than-expected second quarter profit and said it was buying a Belgian digital bank with its own cloud-based IT platform for 370 million euros ($401 million). UniCredit said the purchase of Belgian bank Aion and its cloud-based core banking system Vodeno would add a team of 200 engineers, developers and data scientists. To address this, UniCredit's rival Intesa Sanpaolo for example is partnering with British cloud banking technology provider ThoughtMachine. "The transaction represents one of the first moves by a bank to acquire full ownership of a new technology (without any dependencies from third party core banking providers)," UniCredit said. Net profit in the second quarter rose 5% from the previous three months to 2.7 billion euros, surpassing a 2.4 billion euro average forecast from analysts polled by the bank as revenues held up better than anticipated.

Strong numbers in the company's search and cloud businesses more than offset the slight misses in the YouTube and network units. Cloud recorded a couple of big firsts: exceeding $10 billion in revenue, along with $1 billion in operating income. Whereas investors were — and many still are — concerned about what generative AI might mean for Alphabet's search revenue, the opposite appears to be the case, at least for now. Google Cloud revenue grew roughly 28% to more than $10 billion for the first time. Strong numbers in the company's search and cloud businesses more than offset the slight misses in the YouTube and network units.
