An aerial view of the Dundalk Marine Terminal October 03, 2024 in Baltimore, Maryland. Shares of Moller-Maersk slumped more than 8% on the Friday market open as European shipping companies fell on the conclusion of a U.S. port strike. A prolonged strike would have provided a boost for European shippers to take a larger share of global supply chain demands. Maersk shares pared losses slightly to trade down 7.05% by 9:05 a.m. London time. One option would be to take out Iran's nuclear sites — something Biden opposes. A hit on Iran's nuclear facilities could, however, create far graver consequences, potentially including a race by Iran to build a nuclear weapon. AdvertisementUS President Joe Biden would not support Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in targeting nuclear sites. As The Financial Times noted, there are more than a thousand miles between Israel and Iran's main nuclear bases. And Iran's nuclear sites present a formidable target, sprawling across various sites, with several of the most sensitive located in heavily fortified underground bunkers.

CNN —The US Supreme Court will decide whether a federal law prevents Mexico from suing gun distributors for allegedly facilitating the flow of firearms to drug cartels. The court had already agreed to hear cases on President Joe Biden’s regulation of “ghost guns” and vaping. Mexico says gunmakers are recklessIn its lawsuit, Mexico alleged the manufacturers and distributors were aiding and abetting the purchase of their firearms by dealers known to supply drug cartels. At the heart of the dispute before the Supreme Court is the 2005 federal law passed by a GOP-led Congress. Lawyers for Mexico, which asked the court not to disturb the 1st Circuit’s ruling, defended the ruling’s rationale and argued that it was premature for the Supreme Court to take up the case.

London CNN —In late September, as Israel’s nearly year-long war widened and its credit rating was downgraded yet again, the country’s finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, said that, while Israel’s economy was under strain, it was resilient. Israel’s economy could shrink even more than that, based on a worst-case estimate by the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University. Before the October 7 attack and ensuing Israel-Hamas war, the International Monetary Fund forecast that Israel’s economy would grow by an enviable 3.4% this year.
