Ukraine got the Leopard, Challenger, and Abrams tanks it asked its Western partners for. It's up to Ukraine to either use the tanks to defend against Russian offensives or preserve them for next spring, experts told Business Insider. AdvertisementNow, almost two years into the war, Ukraine has a force of advanced Western tanks at its disposal. Advertisement"These Western type of tanks are qualitatively superior to even the best Russian tanks that the Russians are using in Ukraine," Gentile told Business Insider. There are also questions of whether or not these will be the only Western tanks Ukraine gets, or if there are more in the pipeline.

Like many people around the world with families in Gaza who are anxious for news of their loved ones, wondering if they are still alive, whether they are hungry or hurt, Reem Alfranji is also consumed with guilt. The people of the Gaza Strip have been living for weeks under constant bombardment, cut off from supplies of food, water and medicine. They are desperate for any signs their loved ones are alive. Many grew up in Gaza and know what it is like to run from an airstrike, or how shattered glass turns into shrapnel. Israel launched its military campaign against Gaza in response to terrorist attacks by Hamas, the group that runs the enclave, on Oct. 7.

Ukraine has not used US-made Abrams tanks since they arrived in September, analysts said. AdvertisementThe US sent 31 advanced M1A2 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in September — but they've been notably absent from an actual fighting there. AdvertisementSince receiving its first batch of Abrams in September, Ukraine has likely mixed them with the US-made M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, Cancian told BI. Sergej Sumlenny, founder of the European Resilience Initiative Center in Germany, said the US missed its moment to send its Abrams tanks. Now, with Russia's defensive lines stretching over 1,000 kilometers, or 745 miles , he said the 31 US-provided Abrams tanks are too few to play a "decisive" role in the war.

Jewelry Designers Are Putting Their Sketches to Work

Lorenz Bäumer is convinced that having a special area for sketching in his Paris boutique and hanging original drawings of jewelry designs on its walls has helped distinguish his business from its competitors. “It’s like coming to an artist’s studio and being there with the artist, instead of being at some giant conglomerate jewelry thing that is on the stock market and has 400 stores,” the designer, 57, said. For centuries sketches have been part of the creative process, helping designers to sort through ideas and providing guidance for the artisans who fabricate the pieces. But Mr. Bäumer’s decision to highlight drawing is just one example of the many ways that designers have been putting their sketches to work, using them in everything from social media to sales materials to emphasize the artistry and craftsmanship of their endeavors.

“Allowing confidential sources to be ordered revealed means that the public will have less information. Abrams represented New York Times reporter Judith Miller, who spent 85 days in jail after being held in contempt for refusing to divulge a source in an investigation of leaks about an undercover CIA agent. “The First Amendment interest in protecting journalists’ sources is at its highest in cases, like this, involving reporting on national security,” Philbin wrote in court papers. That settlement resulted in a contempt order being vacated against a journalist who was being asked to name her sources. Courts have recognized that journalists have a limited privilege to keep confidential their sources, allowing reporters to block subpoenas in the past.

NEW YORK (AP) — Amtrak service north of New York City was disrupted Monday because of structural issues with a parking garage that's over the tracks on Manhattan's west side, officials said. Service between the city and the Croton-Harmon station in Westchester County was halted Sunday after structural problems were discovered at the parking garage on West 51st Street. Amtrak said passengers traveling between New York City and Croton-Harmon could take Metro-North, which is honoring Amtrak tickets. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Sunday that city engineers were dispatched to the parking garage to assess the situation. New York City officials stepped up the inspection of parking garages after a three-story parking structure in lower Manhattan collapsed in April, killing one worker, injuring several others and crushing dozens of cars.

For over a decade, photographer Christopher Payne has been documenting people, processes and products at U.S. factories. A former architect, Payne brings an eye for structure and beauty to work on every scale from medicine vials to airplane hangars. Some of Payne’s industrial photographs were made on assignment, but more often he simply emails a factory and asks to take pictures. What matters to him isn’t the prestige or perceived value of the finished product but the complex activities behind it. He has photographed at Tesla , John Deere and Whirlpool, in factories so vast that one cannot see from end to end, and also at small specialty hardware makers with no public-facing storefronts.

In past years, the Grammys have been criticized for failing to adequately reward female artists, and this year’s woman-heavy nominations will likely be welcomed in the industry as a sign of progress. As always, the nominations included some surprises in the top tier, particularly when it came to country artists. (“Fast Car” was not, however, eligible for song of the year, since it had already been nominated for that award in the ’80s.) (Wallen’s hit “Last Night” is up for best country song, though Wallen was not among its four writers.) Harvey Mason Jr., the chief executive of the Recording Academy, said in an interview that the nominations simply reflect the musical judgment of the academy’s 11,000 or so voting members.

An Epic Pilgrimage Across Three Great Religions

On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

The War on College Campuses
  + stars: | 2023-11-02 | by ( Lauren Camera | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +16 min
College campuses have always been bastions of protest, where young, energetic students push older generations in the direction of the next social or political reform. Notably, the prevailing notions of the liberal bent of college campuses are not incorrect. According to a 2023 survey by FIRE of roughly 1,500 four-year college professors, 50% identify as liberal, 17% as moderate, and 26% as conservative. Analysts say the recent inflammatory examples that have not only riven college campuses but altered the way many Americans view them also underscore the increasing difficulty observers in the U.S. have of sitting with complex developments. Many of the country’s most elite schools actually perform the worst, according to the 2024 College Free Speech Ranking by FIRE.

Dave Chappelle was about 24 minutes into his set on Wednesday night in Raleigh, N.C., when he briefly touched on remarks he had made about the Israel-Hamas conflict at a show in Boston last week that had led to cheers, some walkouts and headlines. “Right now, I’m in trouble because the Jewish community is upset,” Mr. Chappelle told a packed crowd of more than 20,000 people at PNC Arena. “But I cannot express this enough: No matter what you read about that show in Boston, you will never see quotation marks around anything I said. They don’t know what I said.”“It’s all hearsay,” said the comedian, who, like many others, requires audience members to surrender their smartphones at shows.
