BANGKOK (AP) — Crude oil prices surged and share prices were mostly lower on Monday after the Israeli government declared war following deadly attacks by Hamas from the Gaza Strip. Oil prices fell back slightly after gaining more than $3 a barrel. Conflict in the Middle East often pushes oil prices higher given the risk of disruptions to supplies. Wall Street hates high interest rates because they hurt prices for all kinds of investments. It means the economy is still doing well despite high rates, which could support corporate profits.

FedEx raises lower end of full-year adjusted profit forecast

REUTERS/Mike Blake/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 20 (Reuters) - FedEx (FDX.N) raised the lower end of its full-year adjusted profit forecast on Wednesday as it benefited from problems experienced by rivals UPS (UPS.N) and Yellow (YELLQ.PK). As one of the largest providers of less-than-truckload shipping, FedEx also was in prime position to benefit from last month's demise of Yellow, one of that sector's dominant players. The global shipping downturn which has hurt margins for the sector has pushed several companies to adopt a balancing act of matching costs and capacity to lower demand. The fall in demand comes against the backdrop of a decline in e-commerce volumes as the pandemic-driven online shopping bubble burst. FedEx now expects adjusted full-year earnings per share between $17.00 and $18.50, compared with its prior forecast of $16.50 to $18.50 per share.

CNN —The threat of a strike at one competitor and the bankruptcy of another proved beneficial for FedEx this summer. Overall, adjusted earnings for FedEx’s fiscal first quarter were $4.55 a share, up from $3.44 a share this time last year. “As a result, we are well positioned as we prepare for the peak season.”The shipping company said its businesses saw a boost from UPS’s negotiations with the Teamsters Union and Yellow Corp.’s implosion during the quarter. For the company’s Ground division, which is its low-cost shipping service, the company reported that operating income grew 59%. FedEx gained customers from Yellow’s bankruptcyBut UPS’s contract negotiations were not the only external factor that helped boost FedEx this quarter.

The recent increase in oil prices could provide a boost to London's prime office real estate market, according to Morgan Stanley. According to their analysis, higher oil prices tend to correlate with increased demand for top-tier commercial properties. When oil prices rise above this threshold, the excess profits are invested by its sovereign wealth fund, PIF, in assets around the world, including tech stocks. Morgan Stanley says that in the past, a similar rise in oil prices has preceded strong 12-month share price performance for London office REITs (real estate investment trusts). For Derwent London, Morgan Stanley forecasts the stock reaching £27.00 ($33.43), up 45% from current levels, within 12 months.

The Czech National Bank (CNB) decided on Thursday to cancel paying interest on banks' mandatory minimum reserves from Oct. 5, a move to reduce the costs of implementing monetary policy. The decision follows a similar move by the European Central Bank in July. Komercni Banka said its stipulated amount of required minimum reserves for the current maintenance period stood at approximately 19.6 billion Czech crowns ($861.12 million). Banks have been required to keep a portion of liabilities at the central bank as reserves. Mandatory minimum reserves are not used as a monetary policy instrument but can act as a liquidity buffer to ensure the smooth flow of interbank payments, the central bank said.

FUKUOKA, Japan, July 26 (Reuters) - Australia's Mollie O'Callaghan finished with a flourish to break the longest-standing world record in women's swimming, claiming the 200 metres freestyle title in a time of one minute, 52.85 seconds at the World Aquatics Championships on Wednesday. Summer McIntosh of Canada was 0.80 seconds behind to take bronze in a world junior record time. Olympic champion Titmus had blazed to the 400m freestyle title on Sunday to erase 16-year-old McIntosh's mark and was well placed to go for another record after topping the semi-final time sheet. Hungary's world record holder Kristof Milak was absent from the men's 200m butterfly that followed, as the Olympic and world champion skipped the meet saying that he was not physically or mentally in a position to compete. The mixed 4x100m medley relay concludes the fourth day of swimming with the Americans tipped to win their third title.

The company reported diluted earnings-per-share of $3.29 for the second quarter, ahead of the $2.86 consensus forecast of analysts surveyed by Refinitiv. Its nearly 6 million subscriber additions outpaced the 1.9 million that Wall Street expected. Am account that reposts viral posts is among the big beneficiaries of Twitter's new monetization scheme. The "Internet Hall of Fame" account appears to have netted $100,000 from the scheme. Musk previously said that accounts based on "theft" of others' post would not get paid. The "internet hall of fame" account, which has 1.9 million followers and describes itself as highlighting the "best of the internet," in a screenshot Thursday was shown to have been paid $107,247.00.
