Israel’s military said early Monday that it had conducted a “wave of attacks” on Rafah, the city in Gaza to which more than a million displaced Palestinians have fled. At about 3 a.m. local time, the military said on Telegram that its strikes on “quality targets” were over. Images and videos on social media, which could not immediately be verified, showed injured people and damage to buildings. News outlets reported deadly attacks on two mosques in Rafah and said people were being taken to Kuwait Hospital in the city. Israel’s most important allies, including the United States and Britain, have warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to go ahead with a plan to send troops into Rafah.

From 1999 to 2020, Black women were on average six times more likely than white women to be a victim of homicide, according to a new study, with researchers pointing to structural social inequities as fueling their higher risk. In 2020, the homicide rate for Black women was 11.6 homicides per 100,000 women, compared to a relatively static rate of 3 per 100,000 among white women in the same age group. Wisconsin, in particular, saw the largest disparity of any state overall, with the homicide rate among Black women more than 20 times that of white women from 2019 through 2020. Study authors said this marks a “disturbing increase” from the period between 1999 and 2003, when the homicide rate among Black women was six times that of white women. “Structural racism might provide insight as to why Black women, regardless of their ethnicity, face disproportionately high rates of homicide,” the study stated.

Russian President Vladimir Putin used an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson to urge Washington to recognize Moscow's interests and persuade Ukraine to sit down for talks. Most of the interview, released Thursday, focused on Ukraine, where the war is nearing the two-year mark. It was Putin’s first interview with a Western media figure since his full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years ago. Two journalists working for U.S. news organizations — The Wall Street Journal’s Gershkovich and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s Alsu Kurmasheva — are in jail. Asked by Carlson whether Russia would release Gershkovich, Putin said Moscow is open to talks but repeated that the reporter was charged with espionage, an accusation Gershkovich has denied.

(Reuters) - Six to eight people are feared dead in a house fire that broke out near Philadelphia on Wednesday, and two police officers responding to the blaze were wounded by gunfire from inside the home, officials said. The suspected shooter was believed to have set fire to the home and was among those still inside, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said. The fire was burning too intensely to enter, so officials said they would wait until Thursday to search for victims, Stollsteimer told reporters. We know the victim's family had a lot of people living in that house including children. We're aware that there were at least six to eight people who are unaccounted for from that family," Stollsteimer said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been interviewed by former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, the Kremlin confirmed Wednesday. Carlson on Tuesday released a video from Moscow in which he said he would be interviewing the Russian president. Carlson claimed that Western journalists had interviewed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy multiple times but could not be “bothered” to interview Putin. Putin has heavily limited his contact with international media since he launched the war in Ukraine in February 2022. Carlson who was fired by Fox News in April, announced he was starting his own streaming service in December.

No matter how great your performance reviews, how popular or prominent you are, how innovative or loyal you’ve been, you, too, can be laid off. They just weren’t yoursA mass layoff is often a failure of management. Plus, in deciding who to cut and who to keep, leaders have to consider what the business will need after a mass layoff in terms of skills and other capacities. Companies try to keep the number of people in the know about a pending mass layoff as small as possible for as long as possible, Williams noted.) If you survive the purge, there are steps you can take right away to protect yourself financially from a future layoff.

CHICAGO (AP) — More than 200 reporters, photographers and other staffers with the Chicago Tribune and six other newsrooms around the nation began a 24-hour strike Thursday to protest years of “slow-walked” contract negotiations and to demand fair wages. The strike, which includes 76 members of the Chicago Tribune reporting staff, photographers and some editors, began at 5 a.m., said Caroline Kubzansky, a member of the Chicago Tribune Guild who is a general assignment reporter for the newspaper. The NewsGuild-CWA, which represents the employees, said the workers participating in the 24-hour strike are demanding fair wages and that management not eliminate their 401(k) match benefits. While there's no universal minimum credit score to rent an apartment, landlords generally prefer applicants with a good credit score, which is at least 670. While your credit score will suffice for some landlords, under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, landlords are also allowed to view your credit reports. The average credit score of a Gen Z consumer is 680 compared to the average baby boomer's credit score of 745. Though these services won't directly help you build credit, keeping track of your credit score is a crucial part of the credit building process. Rupert Murdoch's The Wall Street Journal made widespread cuts to its DC bureau on Thursday in a restructuring that several insiders called a "bloodbath." They were also, however, expected, since staffers had been told a restructuring was coming in preparation for the installation of the Journal's new Washington coverage chief Damian Paletta, who starts February 5. The new Washington bureau will focus on politics, policy, defense, law, intelligence and national security. The expanded Finance & Economics coverage area will unify our reporting on the macroeconomy, global economic trends, monetary policy, credit and banking, and financial markets. Brent Kendall, the law bureau chief, will take on the expanded role of Justice, Judiciary and Law Editor.
