Wall Street will also be watching closely for clues about the ongoing debt ceiling debate, tax policy, foreign relations and more. The unemployment rate ticked down a tenth of a percentage point to 3.4% — the lowest jobless rate since May 1969. European diesel prices fall as Russian ban kicks inEurope’s ban on Russian diesel arrived this week without inflicting more pain on the region’s economy. Russia accounted for 29% of the region’s total diesel imports last year, data from Rystad Energy shows. Countries have prepared for the latest ban by ramping up imports of Moscow’s diesel in recent months.

“Those stocks should act as a buffer against the immediate loss of Russian diesel imports,” Williams said. However, he added that the United States could redirect some of its current diesel exports to South America to Europe, with Russian diesel then “find[ing] a home” in South America. OilX’s Crosby noted that there are “many more” potential buyers of Moscow’s diesel compared with its crude exports. “Most Russian diesel barrels will manage to make it to global markets,” he said. “The notion that Russian diesel will have a very hard time finding new homes is beginning to lose credibility.”— Julia Horowitz contributed reporting.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Billy Packer, an Emmy award-winning college basketball broadcaster who covered 34 Final Fours for NBC and CBS, died Thursday. That has included a ban on all Russian seaborne crude oil imports, which came into force in December. Russia is the bloc’s biggest supplier, making up 29% of its total diesel imports last year, data from Rystad Energy shows. “On diesel we see the opposite, where imports have picked up — almost a final dash before the finish line,” he added. But importing diesel from suppliers further afield, including the United States and Saudi Arabia, will push up freight costs, feeding into higher consumer prices, he said. But León said that the impact of the ban won’t be felt immediately in Europe because of the large amount of diesel in its stocks.
There's a new heavy hitter in the hunt for planets beyond our solar system. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope — the next-generation observatory that has already beamed back some of the clearest and most stunning views of the universe — was used for the first time to confirm the existence of an exoplanet, scientists announced Wednesday. The exoplanet confirmation marks an important milestone for the $10 billion Webb telescope, which launched into space in December 2021 and began science operations less than a year ago. “These first observational results from an Earth-size, rocky planet open the door to many future possibilities for studying rocky planet atmospheres with Webb,” Mark Clampin, director of the astrophysics division at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C., said in a statement. “Webb is bringing us closer and closer to a new understanding of Earth-like worlds outside our solar system, and the mission is only just getting started.”

In her book “Attention Span: A Groundbreaking Way to Restore Balance, Happiness and Productivity,” Mark explains how decades of research have tracked the decline of the ability to focus. “In 2004, we measured the average attention on a screen to be 2½ minutes,” Mark said. “In fact, our research shows it takes 25 minutes, 26 seconds, before we go back to the original working sphere or project,” Mark said. “And then you go back and pick up the original interrupted project,” Mark said. For over 25 minutes, you’re actually working on other things.”(At least I can tell my boss that when I miss my deadline.)

Stocks, which had risen on the “inflation is cooling” news Tuesday, were down Wednesday on the “Fed is not convinced” development. GOP leader Kevin McCarthy is trying to find the votes to become speaker, and adding a spending fight to his plate would get messy quickly. But the spending fight loomsNone of the disagreements over spending are going away. Inflation moved the electionThe difference between 7.1% month-over-month inflation and 7.7% inflation in October may not feel like much on the micro level to Americans who are paying 49% more for eggs this year than they were last year. “In the coming decade, they’re going to be fighting hard to get inflation down.”In the meantime, cooling inflation might be praised by policymakers, but it could rub everyone else the wrong way, especially if an economic slowdown starts to feel like a recession.
The city's homelessness crisis, both an incubator for street crime and a corollary to skyrocketing housing costs, touches almost every facet of life in L.A., even when it's just a backdrop. Bass vowed Sunday to attack it head-on by declaring a citywide state of emergency, an idea that had been circulating through City Hall since at least 2015. Bass is promising a new day and inspiring L.A.'s guardians to forget about the bickering, at least for a moment. "Where there’s will, there’s women," she said. "And where there’s women, there’s forever a way."
New York CNN Business —Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell made investors very happy on Wednesday. Powell’s admission that “the path ahead for inflation remains highly uncertain” means that rate hikes could be here for a while. This isn’t the first time investors rushed into markets on the belief that there would be a Fed pivot. Powell said on Wednesday that there is still a chance the economy avoids recession but the odds are slim. But the labor market still remains historically tight despite the Federal Reserve’s efforts to cool demand and bring down inflation.
Ridloff has been running most of her life – a form of solace in the busiest, most intense periods of her acting career. But the collective spirit and struggle of her fellow competitors at the NYC Marathon, her first time racing the 26.2-mile distance, was like nothing she had previously experienced in the sport. “This truly was a transformative experience for me,” Ridloff, whose recent credits include Marvel Studios’ “Eternals” and post-apocalyptic TV series “The Walking Dead,” tells CNN Sport. Gavin Doremus/Brooks RunningConditions for this year’s NYC Marathon were brutal, particularly for those competing for the first time and unaccustomed to running in heat. New York CNNBusiness —Gap announced Thursday that it has officially launched its store on Amazon. While shoppers were able to buy Gap merchandise on Amazon previously through third-party sellers, the new partnership with Amazon Fashion marks the first time that Gap itself is selling its products on the online marketplace. The items, available for purchase beginning today on Amazon US and Amazon Canada, include the basics that Gap is known for — hoodies, T-shirts, denim, socks, underwear and sleepwear for adults, kids and infants. Gap (GPS) Inc. said its Amazon store will also include Baby Gap (GPS)-branded items such as nursery furniture, strollers, bassinets and cribs. None of the Gap items are exclusive to Amazon (AMZN), however, and will also be available for purchase in Gap stores and on Gap.com.
The welcome GDP report comes amid almost daily recession warnings from bank CEOs, business economists, think tanks and former Treasury secretaries. But as the dread grows, today’s news is a reminder that no one knows for sure whether the US economy will tip into a recession. Moreover, most of those same prognosticators agree that even if we do have a recession, it would be mild. Thirdly, we won’t know if we are, or were, in a recession until it is over:A recession may be coming. But even the staunchest recession hawks think a recession — if it happens — would be mild.
For the three months ended in September, Meta (FB) posted revenue of $27.7 billion, down 4% year-over-year and slightly above Wall Street analysts’ expectations. The Facebook parent company posted its first-ever quarterly revenue decline during the June quarter. The company reported net income of nearly $4.4 billion — less than half the amount it made during the same period in the prior year and below analysts’ projections. Meta reported having 2.96 billion monthly active users on its core Facebook app at the end of the quarter, up 2% year-over-year. “We are holding some teams at in terms of headcount, shrinking others and investing headcount growth only in our highest priorities,” Wehner said.

Ye, also known as Kanye West, has become a controversy magnet. Later, West threatened on Twitter to “Go death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE.”Since Ye’s antisemitic comments, businesses have come under pressure to take further action against him. You still might see Yeezy Gap merchandise on the Gap site, though. BalenciagaKanye’s antisemitic comments were also the final straw for luxury fashionhouse Balenciaga, which severed ties over the weekend. He had collaborated with Balenciaga for a wildly popular Yeezy Gap line earlier this year.

A partner at accounting firm Spielman Koenigsberg & Parker LLP was fined $150,000 for allegedly misleading investigators, the largest monetary penalty imposed on an individual in a case settled by the U.S. auditing watchdog. The regulator also permanently barred Mr. Taylor from associating with a PCAOB-registered accounting firm. Mr. Taylor became a partner at the firm in 1999, according to the firm’s website. Neither Mr. Taylor nor the firm immediately responded to a request for comment. “The quality control systems at audit firms are fundamental to audit quality and regulatory compliance,” Mark Adler, the acting director of the PCAOB’s division of enforcement and investigations, said in a statement.
After weeks of battlefield setbacks, criticism of Moscow’s military leadership has burst into the open — heightening the sense of domestic discontent and posing a rare challenge to the Kremlin. The search for a scapegoat appears to have settled on Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, a close associate of the man who unilaterally launched the invasion: Russian President Vladimir Putin. Appointed defense minister in 2012, Shoigu, 67, had served as the minister of emergency situations, often dispatched to deal with natural disasters and security emergencies, earning him public approval. With Russian forces on the retreat, its military leadership is under fire. Still, such stinging public rebukes of the country’s leadership are extremely rare in Putin’s Russia, where any dissent, especially against those aligned with the Kremlin, is prohibited.
Minneapolis CNN Business —The fever hasn’t broken yet for America’s employment market, but the temperature is coming down. That, coupled with job openings showing some sharp declines, points to a labor market slowdown — an outcome the Federal Reserve is seeking as it battles decades-high inflation. “The job market is slowing gracefully, moderating jobs and wage growth smoothly as the Federal Reserve searches for signs of cooling inflation,” Daniel Zhao, senior economist for Glassdoor, said in a statement. What could, however, move the needle will be the findings from the inflation data due next week, he said. Job openings outpace job seekers on a 1.7 to 1 ratio, the BLS’ Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey for August showed.
“We feel the economy is very strong and will be able to withstand tighter monetary policy,” Powell said in March. Breaking it down: The central bank didn’t go as hard as some investors thought it might. Yet tucked into the central bank’s projections were signs that it plans to stay tough, even if it means pushing the economy into rocky territory. The Fed’s main interest rate is now set between 3% and 3.25%. Plus, many factors pushing up inflation numbers — such as the war in Ukraine and drought conditions — are outside the central bank’s control.
“We wanted to address the headlines of today and the past several weeks related to Yeezy Gap. And we are deciding to wind down the partnership,” Mark Breitbard, president and CEO of Gap Brand, said in the email. As it now moves to wind down the partnership, Gap said existing merchandise from Yeezy Gap will continue to be sold in the company’s stores and its website. West also said that Gap was required to sell 40% of Yeezy Gap products in its retail stores, which hasn’t materialized, according to The Wall Street Journal. “While Kanye could have injected a dose of energy into Gap, the incompatibility of the two visions meant that frustrations were inevitable.
