CHICAGO (Reuters) - The U.S. has detected its first case of avian flu on a commercial poultry farm since April, in a flock of 47,300 turkeys in Jerauld County, South Dakota, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said. Infected flocks are culled to prevent the spread of the virus, potentially tightening the poultry meat and egg supply if more cases occur. Wild birds like ducks transmit the virus. Prior to this week's outbreak, U.S. infections were limited to live bird markets and "non-poultry" birds since April, USDA records show. The last commercial farms infected in April raised turkeys in South Dakota and North Dakota, records show.

Crop Watch farmers in western Iowa, Kansas and southeastern Illinois reported fast harvest efforts last week. The Minnesota and eastern Iowa soybeans are in progress as of Monday, and the South Dakota soybeans could also be started on Monday. So far, the Crop Watch harvest is faster than a year ago but slightly slower than two years ago. Remote workers are doing anything but work in the afternoons. Elena Noviello/Getty ImagesThere are few topics in corporate America as polarizing as remote work. AdvertisementAdvertisementLengthy, expensive office leases might also discourage companies from embracing remote work. As Aki's story points out, that type of rationale from larger companies has created an opportunity for those willing to support remote work. A company's commitment to remote work might not be forever, even if employees view it that way.

A series of setbacks in the House on Tuesday pointed to the difficult reality for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the lower chamber, which appears deadlocked amid the latest revolt by House conservatives. Is there an election coming up by any chance?”While some individual schools and colleges have implemented temporary mask requirements, there is no sign that anyone in federal or state leadership is considering widespread COVID-19 restrictions, requirements or mask mandates. “No COVID-19 public health restrictions or mask requirements are being considered by the Murphy administration," said Christi Peace, spokesperson for New Jersey Gov. It was largely the same message from Democratic governors’ offices in several other states that responded to an inquiry about whether any COVID-19 mandates were under consideration. “Currently, COVID-19 lockdowns and mask mandates are not being discussed and the governor has no plans to institute these measures,” she said. Reinstated mask requirements across the country have so far been limited to a handful of local schools and businesses.

Some legal experts say Trump’s Jan. 6 actions disqualify him for the presidency. Some legal experts say efforts to disqualify Trump could set a troubling precedent that would empower state election officials to unilaterally disqualify candidates based on their own interpretations of "insurrection or rebellion." Others say state election officials are bound to apply it when considering candidates for the ballot and can be compelled to do so by court order. Voters and groups representing them would need to persuade secretaries of state across the 50 states - many of them elected Republicans and Trump allies - to determine Trump is disqualified or to persuade judges to bar them from putting Trump on the ballot. It would require persuading or forcing election officials to keep Trump off the ballot in states governed by his Republican allies.

Powerball's jackpot has risen to a sizable $420 million ahead of Saturday night's draw, although the take-home amount will vary based on your choice of payout and the state taxes where you live. All winners have to pay federal taxes, which includes an automatic withholding tax of 24% levied against the winnings. However, winning millions of dollars will almost certainly put you in the top income tax bracket for 2023, which means another 13% in federal taxes when you file your tax return. You'll likely have to pay state income taxes on those winnings as well, which range from 2.9% to 10.9% depending on which state you live in. However, eight states don't charge income tax on lottery winnings: California, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.
