What Carmelo Anthony Meant to New York City

There were many moments that evoked roars inside Madison Square Garden when the Knicks faced the Miami Heat in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals this month: when Jalen Brunson hit a 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter, prompting a Heat timeout, or any of the five times RJ Barrett sank a 3, sending the Garden’s white-knuckled Knicks fans into a frenzy. But the loudest roar that night came during a stoppage in play when a large video screen showed Carmelo Anthony sitting courtside. Anthony stood with one hand raised as most of the fans gave him a standing ovation, showering him with applause and cheers as if he had just made a game-winning shot. Anthony never won a title for the Knicks or even made a conference finals in his six and a half seasons with the team, but the moment was a reminder of how much he still means to New York. The city had yearned for a star after years of mediocrity and got one in Anthony, a Brooklyn native ready to make Knicks games exciting again.
CNN —Doyle Brunson, dubbed ‘The Godfather of Poker,’ has died at the age of 89, according to a family statement shared by his agent Brian Balsbaugh on Twitter. “It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our father, Doyle Brunson,” the statement read. May he rest in peace.”The World Poker Tour said Brunson, one of the most recognizable faces in poker history, died on Sunday in Las Vegas. “His impact on poker will be felt for generations to come,” the World Poker Tour tweeted. There will never be another Doyle Brunson,” Daniel Negreanu, one of the world’s best poker players, wrote on Twitter.
CNN —Several familiar faces are walking the walk in support of TV and movie writers who are on strike. Members of the Writers Guild of America earlier this week after failing to reach a new contract agreement with studios and streamers. Jay Leno brought doughnuts to a picket line in video shared on social media. Deadline shared a video of “Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon at a picket line in New York City. “I think it’s incumbent upon all of us who care about writers, who care about creative television and movies, to come out here and show support.”
CNN —Several stars are vocalizing their support for TV and film writers. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is currently on strike as they seek better compensation and other concessions from studios and streamers. “Everything changed with streaming and everyone needs to be compensated for their work,” actress Amanda Seyfried told Variety on the red carpet. “Whatever I can do to support the guild,” Fallon said. She also spoke on the Met red carpet about being a member of the guild.
The Knicks walked off the court at Madison Square Garden on Sunday afternoon with their shoulders slumped. The energy that gripped the arena at the start of the game against Miami had dissolved into a mélange of people shuffling out, Heat fans boasting and a few Knicks fans shouting insults, mostly at the game officials and the Heat fans. “I was horrific,” said Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson, who scored 25 points but missed all seven of his 3-point attempts. On Sunday, the Knicks lost to the Heat, 108-101, in Game 1 of the N.B.A.’s Eastern Conference semifinals. But despite the dour mood that engulfed the Garden after the game, it would be unwise to bury the Knicks for their performance.
