As a driver on the glamorous, jet-setting Formula One circuit, naturally the Austrian Gerhard Berger drove some serious iron, even away from the track: a red Ferrari 512M Testarossa. So it was very likely with some dismay that he watched his car unexpectedly drive away with someone else behind the wheel. Berger jumped in the path of the car, according to reports at the time, but had to leap out of the way as it zoomed off. He then gamely gave chase in a friend’s Volkswagen Golf, which went about as well as you would have expected it to. The Ferrari was gone.

The lawyers had earlier convinced the Delaware chancery court to revoke Musk's $56 billion pay package from 2018, with the judge ruling that Tesla's board of directors failed to prove it was fair to shareholders. The lawyers represent former heavy metal drummer Richard Tornetta, who filed the suit on behalf of his fellow Tesla investors. The lawyers are asking for just over 11% of the Tesla shares that would have gone to Musk, or slightly more than 29.4 million shares. Taking their pay in Tesla shares demonstrates they are prepared to "eat our cooking," the lawyers wrote. Musk's pay package was the largest ever disclosed in corporate America, according to Delaware Chancery Court Judge Kathaleen McCormick's 200-page ruling.

Aaron Lansky was a young graduate student in Montreal in the late 1970s when he had an epiphany that changed the course of his life. He had been taking courses in Yiddish literature at McGill University, but was finding it hard to find the books he needed. At times, he relied on older neighbors in Montreal’s vibrant Jewish community who would welcome the opportunity to chat with a young visitor over a cup of tea or a plate of noodle kugel before surrendering their books. As a result, whole libraries filled with works of writers like Sholem Aleichem, I.L. Peretz and Sholem Asch — as well as science and history texts, translations of classics like Shakespeare and Guy de Maupassant, even cookbooks and sex manuals — were being consigned to dumpsters, attics and cellars.

The residential solar company Sunnova Energy took a beating this week as investors dumped their shares after the announcement of a stock offering plan rattled confidence in the company. Sunnova shares plummeted 26.7% Thursday after the residential solar company announced a $100 million at-the-market stock offering program. "This is just an arrow in the quiver just in case and the ratings agencies like to see it," Berger told CNBC in an interview Thursday. Residential solar companies have struggled in the face of high interest rates that have made installations more costly to households. Berger and Sunnova CFO Robert Lane described the stock offering as "good housekeeping."

CNN —The 50 Best Restaurants power list has unveiled its 2024 list for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) — and one city is dominating the rankings. The Middle East & North Africa’s 50 Best Restaurants list was launched in 2022, reflecting the rapid growth of the region’s restaurant scene. With a booming culinary landscape of more than 13,000 eateries, Dubai has dominated the list since its inception, with 15 out of 50 restaurants on the list located in the city for the past two editions. The 50 Best awards has helped “put a spotlight” on the evolving food scene, and by platforming more casual restaurants, they’ve created healthy competition among the city’s many eateries. With ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the organizers decided to forgo a live awards event in the region this year.

Berger points to nearly a 50-year-old study from Harvard University, wherein researchers sat in a university library and waited for someone to use the copy machine. They phrased their request in three different ways:"May I use the Xerox machine?" "May I use the Xerox machine because I have to make copies?" "May I use the Xerox machine because I'm in a rush?" "Persuasion wasn't driven by the reason itself," Berger wrote in a book on the topic, "Magic Words," which published last year.

In today's big story, we're looking at what a hotter-than-expected inflation report means for markets and the econom y . That silver lining doesn’t address the elephant in the room: What does the latest CPI data mean for interest rates? AdvertisementMadison Hoff/Noah Sheidlower/Business InsiderThe hot inflation report comes just a few weeks after some industry experts felt the market was in a perfect position. Stubbornly elevated inflation means Powell might be less willing to cut rates and risk further fueling inflation. It’s particularly painful for smaller companies, which tend to carry floating-rate debt more susceptible to elevated interest rates.

Antonio Masiello | Getty ImagesTwo weeks after a Delaware court ruled that Tesla must rescind Elon Musk's $56 billion pay package, the company's board remains mum on what the decision means for shareholders or what's next for the mercurial CEO. CNBC sent requests for additional information to Tesla investor relations, Musk and some board members. "Given the high stakes involved, it is likely that Tesla will appeal the decision," Kastiel said in an email. In the absence of a successful appeal, "any new compensation arrangement with him will have to be assessed" in light of McCormick's decision, Kastiel said. Kastiel also said that the decision likely makes Musk and Tesla more vulnerable to other types of lawsuits.

Asking someone for help can feel like a burdensome request. Asking for a helper tells the other person that you respect their expertise, flattering them into agreement. That's just one example of turning "options into identities," says Jonah Berger, a marketing professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. "Framing actions as opportunities to claim desired identities will make people more likely to do them," Berger tells CNBC Make It. For almost two years, many economists and observers have figured something has to give in the labor market. And then the labor market has turned around and said, "Ha, actually, no." If you're trying to upgrade your job, you're trying to get a better job, the time to do that was probably a year ago. If you have a job, you're at a relatively low risk of losing that job — despite the headlines about layoffs at some big-name companies. "If you're trying to upgrade your job, you're trying to get a better job, the time to do that was probably a year ago," Preston Mui, a senior economist at the macroeconomic policy group Employ America, said.

You might assume winning arguments — over politics, a work project, or even where to eat — requires hours of researching data and rehearsing well-informed points. Not necessarily, says Jonah Berger, a marketing professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. That's because people often dilute their stronger claims by adding weaker, less relevant ones, Niro Sivanathan, an organizational behavior professor at London Business School, told CNBC Make It in November. So, instead of hearing your strongest points, the person you're hoping to convince may walk away with a shallower understanding of your argument. "If you have just one key argument, be confident and put that on the table, rather than feeling the need to list many others."

Menachem Daum, a filmmaker who co-produced a groundbreaking 1997 documentary that illuminated the cloistered world of America’s Hasidim, died on Jan. 7 in a hospital near his home in Borough Park, Brooklyn. She said Mr. Daum had been treated for congestive heart failure. The resulting film offered a complex portrait of a religious group usually depicted as somber and impenetrable; here it offered scenes of Hasidim joyfully dancing. Mr. Daum, though ultra-Orthodox, was not Hasidic himself. And although he had earlier made a film about caregivers for the aged, he was scarcely a seasoned filmmaker.

The Red Sea is one of the most important shipping waterways in the world, but it’s also one of the most dangerous. Here’s how the cargo industry is responding to try and guard against attacks from the Houthis in Yemen. Illustration: Annie ZhaoWestern importers are reporting a steep rise in ocean-shipping rates and weekslong delays as carriers divert ships from the Red Sea to avoid Houthi rebel attacks. Some companies shipping goods on the crucial trade lane are starting to chafe at the rising prices and extra fees that ocean carriers are imposing for the higher cost of routing containerships on longer voyages around the Horn of Africa following drone and missile attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen.
