A pastor invited to DeSantis' Central Florida Tourism Oversight District's meeting told attendees not to "resist authority." The pastor read from the Bible as the board discussed stripping park parks for Disney workers and retirees. Ron DeSantis to run the area around Disney World defended stripping park employees of their perks — moments after a pastor invited to speak urged attendees not to "resist authority." Last month, the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board revoked all of the land's firefighters' free passes to the Disney parks and resorts. Disney responded with a lawsuit, and while DeSantis said he's since "moved on" from the fight, Disney is not backing down.

It was pretty much the only way to watch “Gunsmoke” or “Howdy Doody” until cable networks arrived in force in the 1980s, bundled together for a monthly subscription fee. For Disney, ABC represented a watershed moment. Look deeper and the big broadcasters attracted only one in five viewers, while one in three watched cable networks. The TV group, excluding cable networks such as Fox News, generated an EBITDA margin of nearly 12% for the year ending June 30. Assume any deal includes cable networks such as Disney Channel and National Geographic.

Singapore is the world's sixth Blue Zone, according to Dan Buettner, a journalist who popularized the term. In the Netflix series "Live to 100," Buettner shows how the country is designed to encourage its residents to live healthier. Policies on housing, transportation, and hawker centers come together to create what he calls a "Blue Zone 2.0." The original five Blue Zone regions include Okinawa in Japan, Ikaria in Greece, Sardinia in Italy, Nicoya in Costa Rica, as well as Loma Linda in California. Disney is in talks to sell ABC to Nexstar, Bloomberg first reported. But the reported talks are another sign that Iger means business when it comes to Disney's streaming future. The company's direct-to-consumer business reported a loss of $2.2 billion in the first nine months of the year — 12% less than during the same period last year. But even if he does sell ABC — and manages to get a good price for it, despite its ominous future — his challenges are far from over. China’s growth is buried under great wall of debt

Most of these 3,000-plus entities were created by local governments during the 2008 crisis to skirt a central government ban on direct state borrowing. These vehicles had already accumulated 80 trillion yuan of liabilities at the end of 2022, according to analysts at Guosheng Securities. At a more optimistic 30% discount, the proceeds would jump to 55 trillion yuan, which would cover all outstanding interest-bearing debt. S&P analysts calculate that about 20 trillion yuan of LGFVs’ loans may be at risk of restructuring. If Xi won't boost property wholeheartedly and is not able to count on consumers, his efforts to revive China’s growth have to focus on smashing the great wall of local debt.

The solution to keep prices under control seems fairly simple: Just build more housing. For a time, sprawl boosted housing supply and accommodated newcomers to the West: Nearly 60 million more people live in the region now compared with the 1950s. Running out of landWhen the economy crashed in 2008, housing construction screeched to a halt. All this red tape has caused a serious slowdown in much-needed housing construction. Build, build, buildDespite the unique challenges of building in the paradoxically wide-open West, some cities have been able to break through.

TORONTO (AP) — Bayard Rustin, the civil rights activist and primary architect of the 1963 March on Washington, who often worked tirelessly out of the limelight, takes center stage in the new Netflix drama “Rustin." “Rustin,” directed by veteran theater and film director George C. Wolfe, is the first narrative feature from Higher Ground, Barack and Michelle Obama's production company. Led by a powerhouse performance by Domingo that's already being called a likely Academy Award nomination for best actor, “Rustin” aims to celebrate a pivotal but undersung civil rights hero. Defeated by strong current where the Ichetucknee flows through a culvert under Highway 27, we let ourselves float downstream. Nearing the junction with the Santa Fe River we could hear music; a crowd of boats was anchored along the forest edge. Around Grassy Hole Spring, where the river threads through islands of vegetation, we saw scattered canoes, each with a band of snorkelers. Close to two miles after starting, we passed the outflow from Blue Hole Spring, the largest spring in the group that feeds the Ichetucknee, and paddling became less strenuous. We reached North End launch, where the river begins with water from its headspring.

GENEVA (AP) — Voters in a southern Swiss region on Sunday rejected a plan to allow large solar parks on their sun-baked Alpine mountainsides as part of the federal government’s push to develop renewable energy sources. The rejection doesn't torpedo solar parks entirely if the private sector wants to develop them. At stake is up to 60% of financing for big solar parks. The federal energy department estimates that about 40 to 50 proposals for large solar parks have been made across the country. Overall, Swiss federal authorities have set a target of 2 billion GWh in new solar energy under legislation promoting development of solar energy, adopted in September 2022.

Michelle Lujan Grisham's emergency order suspending the right to carry firearms in public in and around Albuquerque drew an immediate court challenge from a gun-rights group Saturday, as legal scholars and advocates said they expected. The governor, a Democrat, said the 30-day suspension, enacted as an emergency public health measure, would apply in most public places, from city sidewalks to parks. The top Republican in the New Mexico Senate, Greg Baca of Belen, also denounced Lujan Grisham’s order as an infringement on the gun rights of law-abiding citizens. Levinson said she was not aware of any other governor taking a step as restrictive as Lujan Grisham. “I don’t think it will be a political loss for (Lujan Grisham) to be overturned,” Levinson said.

That subplot puts “Red, White & Royal Blue” into a particular film and television genre: liberal wish fulfillment. Join us on Twitter and Facebook“The West Wing” is, unsurprisingly given its Sorkin-ism, much the same (observers on Reddit and elsewhere have noted Sorkin’s predilection for re-using the same lines and jokes). It was regularly cited as an inspiration for Obama staffers attracted to the show’s insider-y look at the West Wing and its characters’ fundamental decency. That emphasis on process is what makes the politics of “Red, White & Royal Blue” seem smaller than the fantasy of the electoral map hinging on Texas would lead viewers to believe. But process without vision is stultifying, and reflects more than the limits of onscreen political fantasy.

Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared gun violence and drug abuse a public health emergency after a string of recent deadly shootings, some involving children. Lujan Grisham cited the shooting deaths of three children from July through September, as well as a pair of mass shootings in the state. “The time for standard measures has passed,” said Lujan Grisham, a Democrat. The order also prohibits firearms on state property, including state buildings and schools, as well as parks and other places where children gather. The state has one of the highest rates of gun violence and suicide in the nation.

Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico announced a 30-day ban on carrying firearms in public areas or state property in Albuquerque and its county, a move that she said was a necessary response to gun violence in the region but that critics denounced as unconstitutional. The ban was issued on Friday as a declaration of a public health emergency, which Ms. Lujan Grisham said allowed the state to access different resources. The executive order, which covers Bernalillo County, prohibits open and concealed firearms on state property, public schools or public parks, with exceptions only for law enforcement and licensed security guards. Residents with gun permits can still have weapons on private property. Ms. Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, said she was spurred to action after several recent fatal shootings of children, including an 11-year-old boy who was killed outside a minor-league baseball stadium this week in Albuquerque.

Khalife orchestrated a bold jail break from Wandsworth prison on Wednesday morning while dressed as a chef. Factbox: US government shutdown: what does it mean?
  + stars: | 2023-09-08 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
The 2018-2019 shutdown furloughed roughly 800,000 of the federal government's 2.2 million employees. It is not clear whether the United States' 63 national parks would remain open. In the 2018-19 shutdown the Trump administration kept them open with public restrooms and information desks closed and waste disposal halted. Some states, such as New York and Utah, paid for their sites to stay open and staffed during the 2018-2019 shutdown. Unlike a government shutdown, a U.S. debt default would likely have severe consequences, roiling global financial markets and plunging the country into recession.
