CNN —More than 11 million fans have attended Major League Soccer matches this year, breaking the regular season attendance record. With 16 games still remaining before the start of the MLS Cup playoffs, the total has already surpassed the previous record of 10,900,804 set in 2023. At just over 17,000, the average crowd for Inter Miami games, home and away, was the second smallest in the league in 2022. Luis Suárez, Messi’s former teammate at Barcelona, was reunited with the Argentine this year and helped Inter Miami to its first ever Supporters’ Shield in early October. The Herons are favorites to take the MLS Cup, with the playoffs beginning later this month.

Federal Reserve policymakers have been breathing easier lately regarding inflation, and that faith that they're closer to achieving their goal will get a key test Thursday. Specifically, the Labor Department's reading is expected to show an annual inflation rate of 2.2% and a monthly gain of just 0.1%, according to the Dow Jones consensus. However, following a much better than expected jobs report for September, Fed officials in recent days have indicated a likely more measured approach to cuts ahead. Details in Thursday's report will matter: Housing inflation has proven to be stubborn, though policymakers still expect lower rent renewals to feed into the data the months progress. The report hits just after the S & P 500 rose to a new record on Wednesday.

Oil prices steadied in Asian trading on Wednesday, as traders weighed uncertainty surrounding developments in the Middle East conflict against continued bearish fundamentals. Brent crude futures rose 11 cents, or 0.14%, to $77.29 a barrel by 02:23 GMT. Prices had plunged more than 4% in the previous session on a possible Hezbollah-Israel ceasefire, but markets remain wary of a potential Israeli attack on Iran's oil infrastructure. Hezbollah officials on Tuesday appeared to back off from a truce in Gaza as a condition for a ceasefire in Lebanon. The U.S. EIA on Tuesday downgraded its 2024 forecast for global oil demand growth by 20,000 barrels per day (bpd), to 103.1 million bpd, because of weaker industrial production and manufacturing growth in the U.S. and China.

CNN —The exceptionally warm water of the Gulf of Mexico that supercharged deadly Helene last month was made up to 500 times more likely by human-caused climate change, which also ramped up the hurricane’s wind and rain, according to a new scientific analysis. These ultra-warm ocean temperatures were made between 200 and 500 times more likely by climate change, driven by humans burning fossil fuels, according to the World Weather Attribution, a network of scientists that calculates the role of climate change in extreme weather events using real world data and climate models. Hurricanes as intense as Helene are now about 2.5 times more likely in the region, the study found. Baker Jarvis, a resident of Keaton Beach, Florida, works to recover his belongings from his home after Hurricane Helene on September 29, 2024. Rapid intensification, when a hurricane’s wind speed increases by at least 35 mph within 24 hours, has now become more common due to climate change.
