Igor Danchenko, who is charged with five counts of making false statements to the FBI, arrived at the courthouse for his trial in Alexandria, Va., on Tuesday. ALEXANDRIA, Va.—Prosecutors revisited the tumultuous 2016 presidential campaign as they opened their case against Igor Danchenko, saying the analyst who had served as a central source for a dossier of opposition research material about then-candidate Donald Trump and his alleged ties to Russia repeatedly lied to the FBI at a crucial moment in an unprecedented inquiry. “This is a false-statements case, about lies that the FBI relied on in a historic investigation,” assistant special counsel Michael Keilty told jurors on Tuesday, describing how the Federal Bureau of Investigation raced to determine the validity of the dossier’s allegations that the Trump campaign was coordinating with the Russian government to influence the presidential election.
Stifel's research found that consumers plan to spend 9% more this holiday season over 2021. Roughly three-quarters of respondents to a PwC holiday poll indicated they plan to spend the same or more this holiday season. Rather than marking down inventory, companies should hold on to it for the next year if their balance sheets can withstand it, said Siegel. Across the board, many flagship retail stores heavily focused on apparel and footwear like Kohl's and Macy's may struggle to lure customers intent on saving money on discretionary purchases. He points to names heavily focused on electronics and home goods purchased by consumers during the pandemic as one of the weaker areas this holiday season.
To date, nearly 600 companies including Ralph Lauren, Lyft, Best Buy, Adobe, Oracle, and Cisco have signed on. Josh James, the CEO of cloud-software company Domo, is a cofounder of Parity.org and a signatory of Parity.org's gender pledge in 2017 and its race pledge in 2020. Signing the Parity.org gender and race pledges does not hold CEOs accountable to a specific goal or target date. "Imposing a one-size-fits-all deadline or quota would just lead to failure on the part of many companies," Stickney said. Now, the nonprofit is expanding to conduct pay-equity analyses based on race, gender, and age.

Putin’s War in Ukraine May Destroy Russia

The Western media for decades has hailed Vladimir Putin as a great strategist. But if the past eight months have proved one thing, it’s that this strategic wizard often achieves the opposite of his intentions. Mr. Putin has promised many things, including to make Russia an attractive place to live by 2020. Russia’s economy remains largely dependent on oil and gas—and gross domestic product per capita income has fallen nearly 60% since 2013. Government efforts to slow demographic decline have failed, and the Kremlin’s military mobilization for its war in Ukraine has pushed more than 300,000 Russians to flee the country.
CNN —Video game purists expecting a faithful adaptation of the original Nintendo game might be somewhat surprised by first teaser for the new “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which debuted on Thursday. This is also when the game’s memorable music is finally heard, albeit briefly. The CGI-animated film, from Nintendo and Illumination, features several other big name stars, including Charlie Day as Mario’s brother Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. The last time the iconic video game was translated into a feature-length studio film was almost 30 years ago, with the ill-begotten 1993 release of the live-action “Super Mario Bros.,” starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. The new movie is due to hit theaters on April 7, 2023.

"My country has started partial mobilisation and I think it is negatively affecting society," said one. The guesthouse has filled up with Russians since Putin's mobilisation order, and Bat-Tur said he has already turned away dozens of requests for beds. One newly-arrived guest, who identified himself as Aleksey, said he crossed into Mongolia last weekend, leaving behind his wife and three children. "We are not afraid, but why do we have to fight in Ukraine, why?” he asked. Almost entirely dependent on Russian oil and gas, landlocked Mongolia also stands to gain from a gas pipeline that Russia plans to build across its territory to supply China.
The cuts come after Goldman's investment bank logged a 41% dip in year-over-year revenues in July. Goldman Sachs has started wielding the axe at its investment bank. The job cuts are likely to echo across Wall Street, particularly within investment-banking divisions like capital markets and M&A advisory, bankers told me. US lawmakers pressed bank chief executives on reports of fraud on the Zelle payments network. Wall Street is completely delusional about the pain that is coming for the stock market.

Seeking to save lives and equipment, Russian military commanders asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to retreat from Kherson. Dismissing on-the-ground commanders' pleas for soldiers to retreat, Putin has decided to remain in Kherson, a major Southern city in Ukraine, the last in Russian control, The New York Times reported Saturday. As such, the Russian president has immersed himself further into the strategic planning of the war, countering some of the wishes of Russian forces on the ground. Earlier this month, Ukrainian forces retook most of Kharkiv, forcing Russian troops to flee or attempt to disguise themselves as locals. The move marked a major victory for Ukraine as the numbers of Russian troops are dwindling as their morale fades.

New York (CNN Business) Slugger Aaron Judge is chasing baseball history. The New York Yankees outfielder is on the brink of hitting the most home runs in American League history as he sits on 60 for the season . The current record is 61, which was set in 1961 by another Yankees outfielder, Roger Maris. (The overall record for a season is 73 by San Francisco Giants star Barry Bonds. That game, which is the second of the doubleheader, could see Cardinals outfielder Albert Pujols hit his 700th home run of his career.
Many SPAC deals announced last year have been having a hard time closing. Now, the dismal fates of dozens of SPAC deals announced during last year's SPAC frenzy seem to vindicate his analysis. And others this year, like men's grooming brand Manscaped, SeatGeek, the live event ticket search engine, and business news outlet, Forbes, have all scrapped their SPAC deals to go public. Klausner has been paying attention to SPAC deals for a few years. Of the 275 deals announced in 2021, 240 have closed, according to Dealogic data.
Partial military mobilization won't have any effect on the war for months, a think tank said. Putin's order to call up to 300,000 reservist troops to wage war in Ukraine "will not generate significant usable Russian combat power for months," the think tank said. Putin's mobilization order, ISW said, "may suffice to sustain the current levels of Russian military manpower in 2023 by offsetting Russian casualties, although even that is not yet clear." Additionally, Hardie explained, Putin's call for a mobilization of troops "carries serious political risks and was not made lightly." In the wake of Putin's mobilization announcement, many Russians attempted to flee the country while others took to the streets in cities across the country to protest the war.
David Solomon is working hard to build up David Solomon. On a Friday in late July, the Goldman Sachs CEO boarded the company's Gulfstream G650 for Chicago. And that's the latest in a string of actions showing the intertwining interests of David Solomon the CEO and chairman and the interests of Goldman Sachs itself, my colleague Dakin Campbell reports. Staffers say they've been asked to help with his DJ account and they've noted a new emphasis on sports endorsements. Millennium Management tapped Goldman Sachs alum Olga Naumovich to build out its Miami tech hub.
Experts said Putin wanted to avoid the move, but also wanted to bolster his military. The move could weaken support for Putin's regime as Russians are exposed to the reality of the war. The Russian president has found his forces short on manpower while Ukraine, on the other hand, ordered a full military mobilization within days of the invasion in February. "He's a master procrastinator," Michael Kofman, a military analyst of Russia studies at the Center for Naval Analyses told Puck's Julie Ioffe this week. Experts told Insider it could take weeks or months for Russia's partial mobilization to bear fruit, as the reservists need to be trained, equipped, and deployed.
REUTERS/Amr AlfikySept 21 (Reuters) - The cost of renting a home in the United States is surging and young workers have felt the sharpest pain, many of them taking on additional jobs or roommates to afford housing costs. Ralph Lauren Has an Ambitious New Look
  + stars: | 2022-09-20 | by ( Jinjoo Lee | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
Ralph Lauren started out as a tie business 55 years ago before it eventually became known for its iconic polo shirt. The brand now wants to keep the spirit of that expansion going, setting its sights on women’s apparel and less penetrated cities such as Atlanta and Houston. At an investor day on Monday, Ralph Lauren set out a target to grow revenue at a compound annual growth rate in the mid- to high-single-digit percentage range over the next three years, a clear upgrade from its 0.15% CAGR over the past four years. It also expects adjusted operating margins to reach 15% in fiscal year 2025, taking that number closer to American luxury brand peers Capri Holdings , which owns Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo, and Coach-owner Tapestry . That margin target doesn’t seem like such a stretch given that it already expects adjusted operating margins to reach 14% to 14.5% in the current fiscal year, an impressive upgrade from a 5.6% margin four years ago.
The Johnson & Johnson logo is displayed on a screen on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York, U.S., May 29, 2019. But J&J countered bankruptcy court allows all current and future talc lawsuits to be settled together, which it says is the fastest and fairest way. The cancer victims are asking the appeals court to overrule a New Jersey bankruptcy judge who allowed LTL's bankruptcy to continue. LTL's bankruptcy filing automatically stopped lawsuits from proceeding against it, and U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Michael Kaplan in Trenton, New Jersey ruled in February that LTL's bankruptcy should also stop talc lawsuits from proceeding against parent company J&J. In refusing to dismiss the case, Kaplan said the bankruptcy court is better equipped to handle mass tort litigation than other courts.

CNN —The meta aspects of a Hulu comedy about the making of a Hulu comedy quickly pile up in “Reboot,” a fictional show about reviving a series from the early 2000s, reuniting the cast and crew with all their insecurities and old grudges. Created by “Modern Family’s” Steve Levitan, it’s a breezy and very-inside look at Hollywood, with a few too many rim shots but still a fair amount of laughs. She has her reasons, and finds the cast perhaps not surprisingly eager to reprise their roles, mostly for those sweet paychecks. Then again, that’s part of the latitude that streaming allows, and other elements, like the inter-generational conflict, prove frequently funny, and occasionally a little bit sweet. In 25 or 30 years, there might even be a “Reboot” reboot.
