Elon Musk, the mercurial billionaire, had agreed to buy Twitter for $44 billion the month before only to begin raising doubts about the deal soon after. Now, Musk joins the list of rich, white men who single-handedly control social platforms that collectively reach and shape the lives of billions of people around the world. And Musk, who will reportedly have “absolute control over Twitter” according to a shareholders’ agreement, promises to be uniquely disruptive. To those in the first camp, Musk serving as the sole decider at Twitter may be cause for celebration. Elon Musk is a conglomerate, and each arm of his empire potentially gives him more leverage, real or imagined, in advocating for the others.
The biggest tech stocks have shed about $3.2 trillion in value this year. Major tech stocks battled against soaring inflation at the start of the year, which hurt investor confidence about their ability to pass on rising costs to customers. Apple managed to buck the trend and added $178 billion to its market value on Friday after better-than-expected fourth-quarter profits. It lost another $80 billion in value this week to $266 billion after posting its first quarterly revenue drop. Meta stock is down 70% since the start of this year.

All of which raises some questions about the price at which Elon Musk eventually agreed to buy Twitter. But the dollar rallied on Friday as other central banks looked to more than match any easier Fed tilt. Eyes are shifting to another U.S. inflation update later, with European growth and inflation numbers surprising to the upside. Although spurred back higher on Friday by the inflation news, European bond markets had a dovish take on Thursday's doubling of European Central Bank interest rates to 1.5%. Key developments that should provide more direction to U.S. markets later on Friday:* U.S. September PCE price index, personal income and consumption.

McDonald's prices were up about 10% year-over-year in the third quarter. Some might also be trading down to McDonald’s from more expensive chains or restaurants as menu prices increase at a slower clip than prices in grocery stores. “We feel very good about … McDonald’s value proposition,” said CEO Chris Kempczinski during the call.
China smartphone shipments slid 11% in Q3, research firm says

SHANGHAI, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Smartphone shipments in China fell 11% year-on-year in the third quarter as the country's slowing economy took a toll on consumer demand, research firm Canalys reported on Thursday. Brands shipped a total of 70 million smartphones to sellers in the period, down from 78.9 million in same period last year. Apple currently ranks as the fourth top-selling brand in China, with a market share of 13%. The company "is not currently isolated from weak mainland China consumer demand," wrote Canalys analyst Amber Liu, adding that the company has been launching aggressive promotions on previous-generation devices in order to fend off competition from rivals. Xiaomi Corp (1810.HK), which ranked as the fifth top-selling brand, saw shipments fall 17%.
Biden will visit Syracuse, New York, where Micron Technology plans to invest up to $100 billion in computer chip manufacturing, part of tens of billions in new factory spending announced after Biden signed the CHIPS Act subsidizing the industry in August. In Syracuse, Biden will lay out his efforts to rebuild the American middle class and bring manufacturing jobs back to upstate New York, and contrast them with what he has called Republicans' "mega MAGA trickle down agenda." Senior administration officials said Wednesday he will say the Republican economic plans will benefit the super wealthy and increase inflation. Earlier this week, Biden warned Republicans would cause 'chaos' in the world's largest economy. Syracuse's surrounding Onondaga County voted nearly 60% for Biden in the 2020 presidential election.
SYRACUSE, N.Y., Oct 27 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden contrasted his economic plan with Republicans' on Thursday in a last-ditch effort days before U.S. midterm elections to convince voters that Democrats are best equipped to battle inflation and create jobs. "The previous president made a string of broken promises in places like Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio," Biden said. "I would argue it's reckless and irresponsible and will make inflation worse, if they succeed," Biden said. His trip comes at a time when the White House optimism that Democrats could buck history and retain control of one or both houses of Congress has waned. Voters identify rising prices as their biggest concern amid inflation that has hit four-decade highs.
Intel's Mobileye unit set for strong market debut

REUTERS/Shannon StapletonOct 26 (Reuters) - Shares of Mobileye Global Inc (MBLY.O) were set to open 20% higher on Wednesday, potentially valuing the self-driving technology unit of Intel Corp (INTC.O) at nearly $20 billion after the IPO was priced above the anticipated range. At 10:31 a.m. Eastern Time, the shares were indicated to open at $25.05, up from the initial public offering price of $21 per share. Mobileye's strong reception may buck the trend of recent market debuts where investors have given the cold shoulder to newly-listed companies. On Tuesday, Mobileye was valued at $16.7 billion after selling shares above the marketed range of $18 to $20, to raise $861 million. How to know if an annuity makes sense for youFinancial advisors often recommend using a different flavor of annuity when building financial plans: a single-premium immediate annuity or deferred-income annuity. Payouts from immediate annuities start right away, while those from deferred-income annuities starts later, perhaps in a retiree's 70s or 80s. Single-premium immediate annuities and deferred-income annuities are relatively simple to understand compared with other categories, advisors said. By contrast, consumers can't get back principal when they buy single-premium immediate annuities or deferred-income annuities. This is one likely reason consumers don't buy them as readily, despite their income efficiency, Giesing said.
If you're trying to decide if a credit card annual fee is worth it, look at its benefits and assess how many you'll use. This card's $650 annual fee is extremely high for a hotel credit card (or any credit card, for that matter). Credit cards with annual fees frequently asked questions (FAQ)What is a credit card annual fee? Credit card annual fees are effectively a paywall you have to breach if you want to enjoy enhanced (and sometimes super exclusive) benefits you won't find on a no-annual-fee credit card. If you won't use the benefits and perks of an annual fee-incurring credit card, no annual fee credit cards are the way to go.
Index funds tend to be cheaper. Obviously, index provider S&P Global (SPGI) has a vested interest in promoting passive funds backed to various benchmark indexes. Even legendary investing guru Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway (BRKB) has extolled the virtues of index funds for average investors. He noted that just one of every four active funds beat their passive benchmarks over the ten years ending in June. That’s why some investors aren’t singing a funeral dirge for active stock picking – just yet.
Despite strong headline results, shares fell roughly 6.5% in extended trading on lighter Azure cloud growth and weaker forward guidance. Note: Constant currency growth rates, which is what we will cite in this report, help strip out fluctuations in foreign currency, namely a strong U.S. dollar, to provide a clearer financial picture. Xbox Content and Services revenue ticked up 1% in constant currency, while Xbox hardware sales jumped 19% in constant currency. Management expects Azure revenue growth to be lower sequentially by roughly five percentage points on a constant currency basis. Despite coming up a bit short versus estimates, Microsoft is still generating a ton of cash.

I used to focus a lot more on pinch pennies, until I realized it was costing me time. I used to try to save money without much thought for the time invested. Having a dollar amount in mind helps me quickly assess whether an opportunity to earn or save money is worthwhile. If I'm not netting close to $1 per minute, I'm probably not interested. This approach also works in reverse to help me decide whether I should spend money to save time.

The immediate cause of the chaos Truss unleashed was her failure to heed the advice of her hero Margaret Thatcher. Truss might have got away with large tax cuts and a big increase in spending if central banks were still flooding the global economy with cheap money. The Federal Reserve is "playing with fire" in its handling of the economy if it hikes rates by 75 basis points, according to Jeremy Siegel. Despite the ongoing risks from the Fed's aggressive interest rate hike policy, he still likes stocks over bonds. Siegel is not surprised, because companies were able to take advantage of years of low interest rates, as well as today's inflationary environment. And that sets stocks up for upside in the long-term, according to Siegel, who still prefers the asset class over bonds despite the recent surge in interest rates. "Why should I hold something that's 4% [interest rate] before inflation, that's not the greatest yield.

Yet the AI system Jewell and her collaborators developed can so far identify dozens of animal species with more than 90% accuracy. "The things that limit AI can be augmented with that human input," Jewell said, "the AI can definitely learn from the skills of the trackers."
