Investors aren't anticipating healthcare funding to surge to anything resembling 2021 levels this year, and fewer deals could mean shutdowns for many companies running low on cash. Multiple healthcare startups have announced raises this year at Series B and beyond. Investors said there's now a higher bar for which startups get venture funding compared to 2021, however. Exits and shutdowns aheadWhile a number of biotech startups have jumped into the public markets already this year, the IPO window for healthcare startups has remained firmly shut. Still, many investors are optimistic that a few healthcare startups will test the waters later this year.

But American apps have long been barred in China. “The TikTok bill appears likely to become law and China’s displeasure seems ironic, if not hypocritical, given its stance toward American social apps,” said Brock Silvers, managing director at Kaiyuan Capital. The Chinese government has said it strongly opposes a forced sale of TikTok, and it has the legal ability to do so. A man walks past the headquarters of ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, in Beijing. “While China has completely banned [these] American apps, TikTok enjoys all the benefits of America’s free and open legal and political systems,” he said.

Wall Street is not pleased that Under Armour founder Kevin Plank is returning as its CEO. Following the announcement, both Williams Trading and Evercore ISI downgraded Under Armour and lowered their price targets. Linnartz, a former Marriott International executive who took the helm last February, is the second CEO the company has cycled through in less than two years. Since she started at Under Armour, Linnartz had been focused on rehauling the company's C-suite, building out its loyalty program, UA Rewards, and pivoting the brand's assortment to a more athleisure-focused offering that had more stylish options for women. "All of the twists and turns have created a brand that has become increasingly confusing to consumers and to wholesale partners," Saunders continued.

Declining foreign investment and a prolonged property slump are just some of the issues that have put pressure on the Chinese economy — and stock market. We're still relatively underweight China, but we've been reducing that underweight [as] some of the stocks there have become really, really cheap." China Market Research Group's Shaun Rein agrees. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesValuations of Chinese stocks are "way too low" and investors should be looking to cautiously re-enter the world's second-largest economy, according to Shaun Rein, founder and managing director of the China Market Research Group. However, Rein attributed this to the Lunar New Year period, and insisted that deflation "still looms over the Chinese economy." "They're cautious about whether or not the government is going to launch a bazooka-like stimulus — clearly they're not going to." "But we think China's low inflation is a symptom of its growth model built on a high rate of investment. As reducing dependence on investment is still far off, we expect inflation to stay low in the long run."

"Will never fund any Republican candidates or leadership PACs (or the NRSC) run by Republicans who vote against the TikTok legislation," venture capitalist Keith Rabois wrote on X. "Support for the TikTok bill is an IQ test" for members of Congress, Rabois wrote in an email to CNBC. In February, Rabois gave $500,000 to the Congressional Leadership Fund, a political action committee that backs House Republican candidates, according to a Federal Election Commission filing. A managing director at Khosla Ventures, Rabois gave just over $41,000 combined last year to the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Rabois said that whether or not he continues to support the NRCC will be partly tied to how Republican leadership handles the upcoming vote.

Yass co-founded the Philadelphia-based trading firm Susquehanna International Group, which owns a 15% stake in TikTok's China-based parent company, ByteDance. Yass' investment is under threat today, and the typically press-shy billionaire is taking fire from both the left and the right. "This would be a nightmare for Yass, given the major investment in TikTok, if a forced ban hit the company under the Biden administration," Ives said. Today, at least 150 million Americans use TikTok regularly, according to company data. The company has said it stores U.S. users' data securely and rejects the idea that it poses a threat to national security.
