Investors are watching the S & P 500 after it rallied back toward the key 4,600 level to see if it can break out to new all-time highs. A record high in the S & P 500 looks promising after the broader index on Friday closed at 4,594.63, or its best level since March 2022. In July, the last time the S & P 500 tested the threshold, the rally was led by mega-cap tech stocks. On Monday, the market rally took a breather; the S & P 500 ended the session lower by 0.5%, and it stood about 5% below its record. In fact, one market technician on Monday said the S & P 500 could plunge back to its bear market lows in 2024.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday said he thinks Wall Street has made some poor decisions when evaluating mega cap stocks. "Look, on any given day, we're giving, getting these imperfections, these mistakes, these juvenile, uninformed moves," he said. Cramer pointed to tech giant Apple , which he said opened down on Tuesday due to a market-wide decline. But its stock changed course after the company announced its recently approved weight loss treatment Zepound is now available at pharmacies. These "mistakes" can bode well for investors who might want to buy shares of high quality stocks at lower prices.

CNN —A nationally recognized online disinformation researcher has accused Harvard University of shutting the project she led to protect its relationship with mega-donor and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. The allegations, made by Dr. Joan Donovan, raise questions about the influence the tech giant might have over seemingly independent research. Beginning in 2018, Dr. Donovan worked for the Shorenstein Center at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and ran its Technology and Social Change Research Project, where she led studies of media manipulation campaigns. But last year Harvard informed Dr. Donovan it was shutting the project down, Donovan claims. Following Monday's trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will no longer own a position in Emerson Electric. Even with the market overbought all last week, the S & P 500 squeezed out a gain of nearly 1% — its fifth straight weekly advance. For reference, any reading of 4% or more means the market is technically overbought (a reading of less than minus 4% means oversold). To help figure out the market's pulse, we like to refer to the Oscillator as our guidepost for buying or selling stocks. Whenever the market is overbought to this degree, our discipline is to look at areas to raise extra cash.

LONDON (AP) — Britain's polar research ship has crossed paths with the largest iceberg in the world — a “lucky” encounter that enabled scientists to collect seawater samples around the colossal berg as it drifts out of Antarctic waters, the British Antarctic Survey said Monday. It began drifting in recent months, and has now moved into the Southern Ocean, helped by wind and ocean currents. Scientists say it is now likely to be swept along into “iceberg alley” — a common route for icebergs to float toward the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. What we don’t know is what difference particular icebergs, their scale, and their origins can make to that process," she said. The British Antarctic Survey said its findings will help improve understanding of how climate change is affecting the Southern Ocean and the organisms that live there.

New York CNN —The US stock market has rebounded from its months-long rut. Stocks finished out their best month of the year on Thursday, breaking a three-month streak of declines for all the major indexes. “The only way I see a rally continuing is if the bond market behaves itself,” said Richard Steinberg, chief market strategist at The Colony Group. While those stocks have remained at the top of Wall Street’s scoreboard, the recent rally has encompassed a wider range of stocks. Long-neglected pockets of the stock market, from beaten-down financials to small-caps to cyclical stocks, have climbed higher in recent weeks.

Vice President Kamala Harris speaks during the New York Times annual DealBook summit on November 29, 2023 in New York City. Vice President Kamala Harris refused to speak Wednesday about two hot-button issues — TikTok regulation and the promotion by Elon Musk of an antisemitic conspiracy — despite the fact that the White House has taken strong stances on both topics. The vice president likewise ducked questions about Musk, the mega-billionaire head of Tesla , SpaceX, and X, the social media site where he recently boosted the antisemitic claim. The vice president's tight-lipped evasion Wednesday starkly contrasted with how vocal the White House has been on both TikTok and the Musk controversy. At the time of the post, however, the White House blasted Musk for appearing to support antisemitism on social media.
