Republican Senator Roger Marshall said: "Time is of the essence and it's imperative that the Senate not delay delivering this crucial aid to Israel another day," he said. The House bill would provide $14.3 billion for Israel as it responds to a deadly Oct. 7 attack by Islamist Hamas militants, but also cut the same amount of money from the IRS. "Our allies in Ukraine can no more afford a delay than our allies in Israel," said Senator Patty Murray, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee. The White House had said Biden would veto the House bill. Senate leaders are writing their own supplemental funding bill and hope to introduce it as soon as this week.

They found themselves back in the same predicament they confronted in September, when Congress narrowly avoided a shutdown just hours before the deadline. With that temporary funding measure set to expire in days, Mr. Johnson appears set on avoiding a repeat of the circumstances that doomed his predecessor. That means he will need to corral nearly all Republicans to pass a government funding measure, a considerable feat given his party’s resistance to federal spending. “We certainly want to avoid a government shutdown,” Mr. Johnson said. At a closed-door meeting underneath the Capitol on Tuesday morning, Mr. Johnson presented a menu of spending strategies to his conference.

In recent days, Comer has said in media appearances that subpoenas for Biden family members are “imminent.”The end of the inquiry is still likely months away. They did, however, secure an interview with the special counsel overseeing the Hunter Biden criminal probe, David Weiss, for Tuesday, which is unprecedented given that the case is ongoing. At every turn, House Democrats and the White House have dismissed the allegations against the president and poked holes in the Republican-led investigation. “The subpoenas to Hunter Biden and other members of the Biden family should have already happened,” Gaetz told CNN. “We’ll see what comes out.”Even members involved in the inquiry know that the evidence doesn’t clear the key hurdles needed to move forward.

He joins former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers and former Detroit Police Chief James Craig in the Republican field, while the Democratic field has been led by U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin and includes actor Hill Harper. But a vote to impeach Trump just two weeks into Meijer’s first-term made him an immediate target of Trump loyalists. Meijer was among 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump in 2021 following the deadly mob siege of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Questions still linger about whether a moderate candidate who voted to impeach Trump can survive a Republican primary. Trump won Michigan in 2016, and his endorsed candidates have overwhelmingly won primaries before losing by wide margins in general elections.

Two Republican lawmakers have filed separate resolutions to censure Tlaib this week, after a similar effort failed last week. “I have been really careful, partly because our Michigan delegation is so small, and we work together,” Stevens told CNN. “Democratic Rep. Last week, 23 House Republicans opposed a Tlaib censure resolution led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. 2 Senate Republican John Thune told reporters that Johnson's plan has "a lot" of support among Republicans in the Senate, adding: "It'd be strong." The Republican-controlled House passed HR-2 in May, but the bill has gone nowhere in the Democratic-led Senate. Among other things, the Senate Republican proposal would resume construction of a border wall -- former President Donald Trump's signature goal -- in addition to deeming large numbers of migrants ineligible for asylum. Republican border provisions face broad opposition from Democrats in Congress and from President Joe Biden. He told reporters that a bill linking Ukraine aid to border security would come soon.

Although the purpose of an HSA is to save money for inevitable healthcare expenses, you can just as easily use your HSA as an investing tool. The IRS and Democrats have emphasized that the tax agency’s additional funding is helping ordinary taxpayers. Photo: Ting Shen for the Wall Street JournalWASHINGTON—For everything, there is a season. Last winter, House Republicans kicked off their majority by trying to repeal almost all of the $80 billion that Congress gave the IRS in 2022 to improve technology and enforcement. This spring, in a debt-ceiling deal, Republicans got President Biden to agree that the IRS should give back $21.4 billion. House Republicans included even more IRS cuts in this summer’s spending bills for government agencies, and lawmakers are still arguing about those proposals.

Twelve Democrats voted with 214 Republicans for the bill, and two Republicans joined 194 Democrats in objecting. Republicans have a 221-212 majority in the House, but Biden's fellow Democrats control the Senate 51-49. To become law, the bill would have to pass both the House and Senate and be signed by Biden. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office on Wednesday said the IRS cuts and Israel aid in the House bill would add nearly $30 billion to the U.S. budget deficit, currently estimated at $1.7 trillion. After the vote, Johnson urged the Senate and White House to quickly approve the bill.

House GOP leaders said they plan to hold a vote on the package on Thursday but such is the uncertainty in the party’s chaotic majority that no timetable is ever certain. But House GOP Whip Tom Emmer and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise both said they expect to pass the package later in the day. For years, a vote on aid to Israel might have been one of the least controversial measures to come up in the House all year. But Johnson defended his decision on Thursday to link Israel aid to cuts in IRS funding. But the last few weeks have shown there’s a vast difference between what a GOP speaker wants to do and what he can do.

House Passes Aid Package to Israel With IRS Cuts

The House narrowly approved an aid package for Israel on Thursday – a vote that ordinarily would have been an easy bipartisan victory but one complicated by Democrats’ accusation of a political “poison pill” in the GOP’s attempt to offset the new spending with cuts to the IRS. Democrats largely opposed the $14.3 billion aid package, acknowledging that while they support aid for Israel, the mechanism for providing it, along with the lack of funding in other areas, made it a nonstarter. “What the House Republicans have done is unprecedented and will mean any aid to Israel will be delayed,” Rep. Rosa DeLauro, Connecticut Democrat, said ahead of the vote. “This is the first time we have conditioned aid to Israel. Nevertheless, Speaker Mike Johnson forged ahead with the vote, seeming to dare Democrats to oppose the aid package.

Rep. John Duarte, a vulnerable House Republican, owns a family tree farm in California. His farm is facing a new lawsuit alleging that they deceptively sold the wrong kind of lemon tree. That's on top of an existing 2015 lawsuit alleging that his farm sold defective pistachio trees. Specifically, Turner says that Duarte Trees and Vines — a tree nursery located in California's Central Valley — agreed to sell him 1,860 "8A Lisbon lemon trees," but sold him seedless lemon trees instead. One of the 31 Democrats who voted to spare George Santos explained why. Rep. Jeff Jackson wrote on Reddit that he's worried kicking Santos out before an ethics probe finishes would set a dangerous precedent. Rep. Jeff Jackson, a TikTok-savvy freshman lawmaker from North Carolina, wrote on Reddit that he didn't vote to spare Santos because he thinks Santos should remain in office. "The better precedent is to expel members only post-conviction or post-ethics investigation," Jackson wrote in a Reddit comment. WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans went after the IRS — long a GOP whipping child — when they decided that emergency aid for Israel should be coupled with cuts elsewhere in the budget. The aid bill that passed the House on Thursday — unlikely to be approved by the Democratic-controlled Senate — would cut $14 billion from the nation's tax collector in exchange for providing assistance to Israel. President Joe Biden has said he would veto the bill if it reaches his desk. The IRS cutback would cost taxpayers billions of dollars, not save money, according to independent budget analysts. In June, legislation to raise the statutory debt limit also rescinded $1.4 billion given to the federal tax collector through the IRA.

Opinion | Israel, the I.R.S. and the Big Grift

It often seems to me that we need a term to describe a somewhat similar phenomenon in policy debates, which we might call the Big Grift. A case in point is the current demand by House Republicans that funding for Israel in this moment of crisis be tied to budget cuts that would undermine the ability of the Internal Revenue Service to crack down on wealthy tax cheats. This should be a major scandal, but my suspicion is that many voters just won’t accept the idea that G.O.P. Some history: Way back in 2001, in the aftermath of Sept. 11, House Republicans passed a bill responding to the emergency by … cutting corporate taxes. At the time, my sources told me that when political consultants tried to describe the bill to focus groups of voters, they refused to believe that the legislation was being described accurately.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Biden administration officials hosted big city mayors at the White House on Thursday to discuss how to manage a growing number of migrants, one day after those leaders sent a letter asking for more federal help. Denver Mayor Mike Johnston and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson met with White House chief of staff Jeff Zients and Homeland Security Department officials before heading to Capitol Hill for meetings with lawmakers. If they could work, the cities would require less federal aid to help house them. “I think they seem receptive,” Johnston said of federal officials. It's unclear whether House Republicans will fund any of Biden's request for help for the cities.

In response, they adopted a tragic sensibility. You can try to avoid thinking about the dark realities of life and naïvely wish that bad things won’t happen. Or you can confront these realities and develop a tragic mentality to help you thrive among them. This tragic sensibility prepares you for the rigors of life in concrete ways. Third, this tragic mentality encourages caution.

Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, arrives at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, DC, on Tuesday, July 4, 2023. Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, on Thursday denounced congressional Republicans and right-wing media figures for using his well-known history of drug abuse to attack his father and launch "fruitless" investigations. "My struggles and my mistakes have been fodder for a vile and sustained disinformation campaign against him, and an all-out annihilation of my reputation through high-pitched but fruitless congressional investigations," the younger Biden wrote. The charges stem from him "possessing an unloaded gun for 11 days five years ago," Biden wrote, adding they "appear to be the first-ever of their kind brought in the history of Delaware." Biden pleaded not guilty last month to a three-count indictment in the case in a U.S. District Court in Wilmington, Delaware.
