Workers are missing cog in US manufacturing gears

NEW YORK, Nov 7 (Reuters Breakingviews) - There’s a spanner in the freshly restarted U.S. manufacturing machine. Based in part on the planned construction spending, Goldman Sachs analysts estimate that Biden’s initiatives could lead to as many as 250,000 new manufacturing jobs over the next two years. Pay growth is also cooling faster for production and manufacturing jobs, at 4.2% year-over-year in August, down from an 11% annual peak in December 2021 and compared to the national average of 4.5%, according to jobs website Indeed. By 2030, technological and cognitive skills in the manufacturing sector will be in far higher demand as the share of physical and manual tasks drops by more than a quarter from 2016, McKinsey says. The U.S. manufacturing engine may be humming along now, but employment-related complications threaten to throw sand in the gears.

Following Monday's trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will own 870 shares of DD, increasing its weighting to 2.15% from 1.78%. To be fair, the stock deserved to be dinged because it was a mixed quarter from the chemical and material manufacturer. While Q3 beat estimates on EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization), the company lowered its full-year outlook below Street expectations, mostly to reflect some ongoing softness in consumer electronics demand and slower water demand in China. TOKYO, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Japanese chip materials maker JSR Corp (4185.T) on Monday slashed its operating profit forecast for the current financial year by 62%, citing a weak recovery in demand for semiconductors and a slowdown in the biotech market. Investors are debating the recovery path for the chip industry which has been hit by a slowdown in demand for electronics such as smartphones and PCs. "We had projected an upturn in the second half of the year and as we've highlighted here we're no longer expecting that upturn," JSR CEO Eric Johnson told a news conference. Operating profit was 3.4 billion yen in the second quarter, following a loss of 6.1 billion yen three months earlier. A leading maker of photoresists used in chip making, JSR said sales for cutting edge extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography grew 15% year-on-year in the April-September period.

However, NXP CEO Kurt Sievers said the company's communication infrastructure business performed "slightly below expectations" in the third quarter. The company forecast adjusted current quarter revenue in the range of $3.30 billion and $3.50 billion, compared to analysts' estimate of $3.43 billion, per LSEG data. MEXICO CITY, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Mexican businesses, particularly those linked to real estate and construction, are counting on investment from so-called "nearshoring" to boost profits and economic growth, especially in industrial zones near the U.S. border. "Many companies are already talking about this - about nearshoring and the economic benefits," said Gerardo Copca, an analyst at consultancy MetAnalisis. One notable project - electric vehicle maker Tesla's plans for a reported $5 billion factory in northern Mexico - has been credited with attracting $1 billion in Chinese investments to nearby industries. Mexican real estate investment trust Fibra Uno (FUNO11.MX) plans to launch a trust allowing investors to cash in on expected growth of industrial assets. Total Mexican construction output jumped almost by 46% in August year-on-year, with northern states performing strongly.

Indian economy regains its swagger as China stumbles

New Delhi CNN —India’s economy is like an elephant. India’s economy is currently worth nearly $3.5 trillion, making it the world’s fifth largest. “India’s economy is comfortably placed to grow at an annual rate of at least 6% in the coming few years,” Barclays said. But even as India’s heft is increasing, it is far from recreating the economic miracle China unleashed decades ago. It will, no doubt — though it won’t be enough to shield the world economy should China’s economy stumble badly,” they added.
