Shifting some primetime entertainment to streaming services has made local stations less attractive, DirecTV said. DirecTV recently resolved a dispute with Cox Media Group, which owns several local stations. The satellite television provider on Sunday announced a package allowing customers to "opt out" of local stations. "That trend continues to diminish the quantity and quality of scripted entertainment on these same local stations." In February, DirecTV resolved its dispute with Cox Media Group, a conglomerate that owns several local television stations in markets across the country.

Opinion: Mike Pence’s bombshell announcement
  + stars: | 2024-03-17 | by ( Dean Obeidallah | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —Former Vice President Mike Pence’s announcement last week that he would not endorse Donald Trump for president in 2024 was truly a bombshell. However, the reasons Pence offered for his decision were little more than a bland litany of policy issues. And when Trump heard that his supporters were chanting “Hang Mike Pence,” the then-president responded that his vice president “deserves it,” a former White House aide testified. Pence already has the perfect message for past and present Trump supporters, as well as anyone undecided about Trump. And anyone who asks someone else to put them over the Constitution should never be president of the United States again.” Amen.

The subway crime that Jimmy Sumampow had been hearing about in recent years — as well as his own experience — had already led him to make plans to leave New York City. Then, on Friday, he saw a video online of the shooting on an A train this week. “I feel I should move out for a while and see if New York takes action and gets better,” he said. For Elise Anderson, however, the shooting did not raise her level of concern. Subway crime data in recent years shows a muddled picture, and just as they have in surveys of riders and polls of residents, New Yorkers’ opinions diverge.

Some DINKs are using their higher net worth to retire early, travel, and afford luxury items. But there's an even darker side to DINKs: The slice that forgoes kids not by choice but out of necessity. It's difficult to parse out the exact number of Americans who might want kids but can't have them. We know that the childfree group — people who don't want kids — might be about 20% of the US adult population. It's contributing to a whole population of DINKs who can't afford to shed the moniker.

Politics in India is an expensive business, and sometimes lucrative, too. In this year’s election, parties are expected to spend more than $14 billion — as much as in the United States. But there has been little in the way of transparency for the huge sums sloshing around. Reading between the lines of the spreadsheets full of names poses questions about the intersection of government and business in India. Construction companies, gambling impresarios, pharmaceutical bosses and many more corporate entities and individuals had forked over $1.7 billion in bonds since 2019.

WASHINGTON — As a candidate in 2020, Joseph R. Biden Jr. campaigned to end billions of dollars in annual tax breaks to oil and gas companies within his first year in office. Mr. Biden’s budget request to Congress this week was his fourth attempt to eliminate what he called “wasteful subsidies” to an industry that is enjoying record profits. His new budget proposal calls for the elimination of $35 billion in tax breaks that would otherwise be provided to the industry over the next decade. Mr. Biden’s wish is opposed by the oil industry, Republicans in Congress and a handful of Democrats. In Washington, it seems, oil and gas subsidies are the zombies of the tax code: impossible to kill.

This prompted Beijing to ramp up its efforts to bolster manufacturing and domestic tech, in a bid to modernize its economy and remain globally competitive. "We're looking at major economic transition, which is taking place, which gives us very strong grounds to be very positive about the medium and long term outlook," Elhedery said. Dear Tripped Up,Last September, my husband and I left our kids with their grandparents and set off to Ireland. Our $2,132 itinerary took us from Minneapolis to Toronto to Dublin on tickets booked on United Airlines through Expedia but ultimately operated by Air Canada, a United partner. Checkout time came and went without a word, so we went to the airport and were told to call Air Canada customer service. I skipped over Expedia, since your trip had already started, and reached out to United and Air Canada — as you flew on an airline’s partner, it’s a code share arrangement. Air Canada, on the other hand, took almost two weeks to get back to me, and its response was underwhelming.

Bond yields climbed in the session — with the benchmark 10-year Treasury reaching 4.29% — as investors wondered if the recent economic data was too strong for the Federal Reserve to loosen monetary policy. Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is building an investor group to acquire ByteDance's TikTok, as a bipartisan piece of legislation winding its way through Congress threatens its continued existence in the U.S. "It's a great business and I'm going to put together a group to buy TikTok." Last week, Mnuchin's Liberty Strategic Capital was a lead investor in a $1 billion capital raise to stabilize New York Community Bancorp. That administration also took an antagonistic stance toward TikTok, which ultimately resulted in ByteDance striking a data partnership with Oracle .

Until now, previous attempts to convert evaporation energy into electricity have suffered from a low-conversion efficiency. The authors claim that their drinking bird generator can yield much more power than previous experiments that used other methods were able to.
