The bad news: Consumers aren't expected to spend more this holiday season. With spending in line with last year, this holiday shopping season becomes a market share story — a zero-sum game. Foot Locker (FL) has issues outside of the holiday season such as an inventory glut, an overreliance on Nike (NKE) and the need to shut down unprofitable stores. We see no reason to change our 4 rating on both stocks ahead of the holiday season. Bottom line We are in a good position to benefit from how discretionary dollars will be spent this holiday season.

Meta is making a comeback to China 14 years after Facebook was blocked from being accessed there. The firm has struck a deal with Tencent to sell VR gear in 2024, The Wall Street Journal reported. Deals with Chinese firms are among the few ways big US tech companies can get a foothold there. China has largely banned US tech firms , bar Apple, from doing business there for several years. Meta still extracts cash out of China through Facebook and Instagram ads it sells to Chinese companies.

REUTERS/Florence Lo/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsTOKYO, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Japan's efforts to regain its position as a leading manufacturer of chips are "impressive", the head of a leading chip research organisation said on Thursday. "Japan this time has taken a bold approach and has implemented very quick decision making," Luc Van den hove, CEO of Belgium-based Imec told reporters in Tokyo. One key initiative is chip foundry venture Rapidus, which is led by veteran chip executives and hopes to manufacture cutting-edge chips by partnering with IBM (IBM.N) and Imec. "What Rapidus is trying to do is extremely difficult," said Van den hove, adding that "the Japanese team and government are very motivated to make it a success, so I'm positive." Imec, an important part of chipmaking research efforts funded by industry and governments, is considering opening offices in Hokkaido, where Rapidus production will be located, and in Tokyo, Van den hove said.

My dad let me know that I was spending my money as fast as I was earning it. He told me to handle the money I already had better by paying cash, living within my means, and ditching debt. When I first started making real money, I quickly found myself in a position where there was more money going out than coming in. My dad didn't agree. "You just started working," he said, "you don't have a financial cushion, and as soon as you get paid you are spending money."

Sony on Thursday reported a 29% drop in operating profit in the fiscal second quarter as the Japanese electronics giant suffered from weakness in its imaging sensor — or chip — business. Here's how Sony did in the September quarter versus LSEG consensus estimates:Revenue: 2.8 trillion yen ($18.5 billion) versus 2.87 trillion yen expected. Operating profit: 263 billion Japanese yen versus 304.4 billion yen expected. Sony attributed the significant drop in profit to weakness in its imaging sensor business, as well as declines in profit at its financial services and entertainment, technology and services businesses. Despite the slide in profit, the company increased its sales forecast for the full year, saying it now expects total sales of 12.4 trillion yen (up from earlier forecasts of 12.2 trillion yen) as it benefits from positive foreign exchange rates.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —South Korea has become the latest country to declare war on bedbugs following a wave of outbreaks, with bathhouses, university dorms, and train stations across the country on high alert. Previously, the country had been practically free of bedbugs following past extermination campaigns, with just nine infestations being reported to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention (KDCA) since 2014. Meanwhile, pest control companies say they have become inundated with phone calls asking for help. “Bedbugs are developing resistance to the insecticides that we commonly use, so the most effective solution these days is heating. “Early and proactive responses are crucial.”In its “Bedbug Prevention and Response Guidelines,” the Seoul City Government advises people against bringing items with a risk of infestation into their homes.

They argue that geopolitical tensions between the West and China risk the reliable supply of rare earth minerals. Aclara's Barua said that Western supply of rare earth elements will not develop if it depends on Chinese prices. "The price of any metal (rare earth or otherwise) that is coming from China or from western countries has the same pricing, so why should rare earth pricing be different?" The discussion on pricing has come up often in the Rare Earth Industry Association, said Veluri, who is also the president of the global organization with partners representing the whole rare earth value chain. "But for things like cobalt, copper, or rare earth metals there is a good strategic play to find with a mining partner."

India is considering a policy to mandate equipping smartphones with hardware to receive live TV signals without the need for cellular networks. It has proposed use of so-called ATSC 3.0 technology popular in North America that allows precise geo-locating of TV signals and provides high picture quality. The policy pushback is the latest from firms operating in India's smartphone sector. For India's government, the live TV broadcast features are a way to offload the congestion on telecom networks due to higher video consumption. Samsung tops India's smartphone market with a 17.2% share, while Xiaomi follows with a 16.6% share, according to research firm Counterpoint.

Adding decorations to a steering wheel can liven up a dull commute, and the internet now offers endless possibilities. Fuzzy steering wheel covers, stickers that look like diamonds or embroidered flowers, and even steering wheel trays with room for electronics and food are all easy to find online. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said this week that what may seem like a harmless decoration could cause a serious injury in a crash. A consumer alert issued by the agency on Monday warned drivers not to adorn their steering wheels with decorative emblem decals because in a crash they could come off and hurt someone. “In a crash, the force of a deploying airbag can turn the product into a projectile, resulting in serious injury or death,” the alert said.

SEOUL, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Hyundai Motor Group's air taxi unit Supernal plans to build a manufacturing facility in the United States to make flying electric taxis for commuters, the South Korean auto group said on Wednesday. Electric air taxi-makers worldwide have pitched themselves as clean alternatives to decongest cities, attracting investment from airline heavyweights such as Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N) though they are still a long way away from commercial operations. Shin said the eVTOL taxi would be capable of flying at 120 mph (193 kph) and have capacity for a pilot and four passengers, targeting December 2024 for a test flight. Hyundai Motor, Kia Corp (000270.KS) and Hyundai Mobis (012330.KS), have together invested 1.2 trillion won ($915.70 million) in Washington-based Supernal since its establishment in 2021, according to regulatory filings. Last month, Hyundai Motor Group signed an agreement with Korean Air Lines (003490.KS) to work together to accelerate the design of electric eVTOL vehicles and air mobility ecosystem in South Korea.

In electric vehicle motors, rapidly shifting magnetic fields spin a rotor made with magnets that contain “rare Earth minerals” such as terbium and dysprosium. China accounts for a large percentage of the world’s rare Earth minerals supply, according to the United States Geological Survey. And among those minerals used for EV motor magnets, China is responsible for about 90%, according to Niron. The technology could also make EV motors less expensive, he said, but declined to say by what percentage. Daniels would not say when GM expects to begin manufacturing EV motors using the new magnet technology.

Semiconductor sales to the auto industry jumped 16% in 2022. The industry has been mired in a historic slump for more than a year now. The Semiconductor Industry Association, or SIA, reported last week that global chip sales in September fell 4.5% from the same period last year. That made for the 14th straight month of sales declines—a streak not seen in more than a decade. Much of the downturn has been due to weak sales of PCs, smartphones and other consumer and business electronics that saw a rise in demand earlier in the pandemic.

Asked about the possible investment plan at the time, Intel told Reuters: "Vietnam is an important part of our global manufacturing network, but we have not announced any new investments."
