Dow said it was recycling our shoes. We found them in Indonesia
  + stars: | 2023-02-25 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +19 min
While the sample was small, the fact that none of these shoes made it to a Singapore recycling facility underscores weaknesses in the system. Dow said these builds will use the 10,000 kilograms (22,000 pounds) of recycled shoe material that have been produced through the Singapore recycling project so far. Reuters had dropped those shoes into a Dow recycling bin at a Singapore community center in September, three months earlier. Recycling flopsThis is not the first novel recycling scheme launched by Dow that hasn’t lived up to its billing. In its Jan. 18 statement, Dow said the shoe recycling partners are “energized by the common vision of sport championing a greener and more sustainable Singapore.” Dow did not comment on the Journal of Consumer Psychology study.
Midlife disappointment becomes a problem in much the same way as bankruptcy overtook Mike Campbell in “The Sun Also Rises”—gradually, then suddenly. Jim Gaffigan is an inspired choice to play its flabby, saggy embodiment in the quirky dramedy “Linoleum,” in which he plays a frustrated, 50-something children’s television-show host who is beginning to agree with everyone around him that his existence hasn’t added up to much. Mr. Gaffigan is a sneakily brilliant stand-up who deserves more opportunities to shine on the big screen. I wouldn’t cast him as Batman or Thor, but in the small subset of movies that remain centered on characters much like ourselves, he is underutilized. With his body-by-Pillsbury shape and his aura of being woefully familiar with defeat, he makes for a much more convincing option as an aggrieved Everyman than, say, George Clooney .
How TV dinners changed American cooking, forever

American frozen food aisles wouldn't be as jam-packed if it wasn't for the TV dinner. Our desire for convenience in the kitchen has fueled a wave of food innovations, and it all began with the TV dinner. The TV dinner's promise of a hot-and-ready meal in under 25 minutes laid the groundwork for convenience-centric meal options to become the norm today. "Convenience foods are always going to be important for the consumer," said Phyllis Levy, the former executive director of new ventures at Campbell Soup Company . Watch this video to find out how TV dinners ushered in a new age of convenience in American kitchens, and how they led to a pandemic-era boom in frozen food sales.
Bath & Body Works said in a statement late on Wednesday, "The Board strongly disagrees with the views expressed in Third Point's letter." However, it said it would review and consider Third Point's proposed board nominations. Third Point followed through and announced its board challenge hours after Bath & Body Works on Tuesday said that it was adding a second new board member, possibly to assuage the hedge fund's criticisms. Bath & Body Works is valued at roughly $10 billion. This marks Third Point's first proxy fight since 2018 when it challenged Campbell Soup Co.
Home Depot is spending $1 billion to increase wages for hourly workers, the company said Tuesday. Walmart similarly announced last month that it would raise its minimum wage to $14 per hour. Both Walmart and Home Depot said they hoped the raises would boost employee retention and recruitment. The investments show how tight the labor market remains for retail workers, even amid warnings of a potential recession and a rush of layoff announcements among companies in tech, media, and other industries. Retail workers are quitting at faster rates than the national average, and retail had the second most job openings of any industry as of December 2022.

Body doubling provides that motivation, experts said. “But I do know that the idea of externalizing motivation is a long-standing, evidence-based mechanism for managing ADHD,” Roberts said. The other person doesn’t have to be doing the same thing as you, unless the activity you need body doubling for — such as exercising — requires that assistance. How transparent you are about why you need a body double is up to you, as is whether you have more than one body double. There are also body doubling or coworking platforms or apps such as Flown, Focusmate or Flow Club.

According to a new study, early-career job titles have changed drastically in the past few years. While it's not clear how widespread this discontent is — Goldman has some 400 partners — some partners are already talking about who might replace CEO David Solomon if it comes to that. While the UK as a whole voted to leave the EU in the 2016 Brexit referendum, Northern Ireland voted 56% to 44% to remain. But if there is no agreement unionists can support, Northern Ireland will continue to have no functioning political institutions, he said, "and I don't think that is an outcome that anybody really wants". "If the choice is Sinn Fein rule or even imperfect British rule I would certainly take British rule before I would take Sinn Fein rule," said TUV leader Jim Allister. Completing the intense pressure Donaldson is under from all sides as the defining moment of his leadership nears is the more liberal Ulster Unionist Party, ready to cast itself as the unionist party of pragmatism if the DUP's boycott escalates. What will ultimately protect Northern Ireland's place in the United Kingdom is if Northern Ireland works."
"Because the consumer is now under more pressure, and Walmart is under pressure, that sets up a dynamic where there's probably not a lot of pricing going forward." The clout Walmart holds over suppliers also means that Walmart would likely get the lowest percentage of any price hikes manufacturers implement, according to investors who track the company. In 2018, Walmart pulled Campbell Soup Co's (CPB.N) products during the key winter season over a dispute over prices and shelf space promotion. At the time, Tesco labeled Heinz's price hikes as "unjustifiable." After raising prices four times in 2022, he said, Clorox doesn't "have any additional plans" to hike prices this year.
Disney CEO Bob Iger announced a new business structure Wednesday and further details emerged Thursday. ESPN and ESPN+ will form a separate unit, led by Jimmy Pitaro. Hollywood is already busy sharing memes about Bergman and Walden and how they will share and compete for power. As part of the cuts, Iger has directed his reports to lay off 7,000 staffers. A Thursday morning press release outlined all the shared services units that will now come under Bergman, Walden, and Pitaro.
LONDON, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Mercedes-Benz (MBGn.DE) faces more than 300,000 claims at London’s High Court from the owners of diesel vehicles that were allegedly equipped with “defeat devices” to cheat emissions tests. The German carmaker is said to have misled customers about certain diesel vehicles’ compliance with nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions standards. Mercedes-Benz denies that any defeat devices, which can change vehicles’ emissions levels, were installed in its vehicles. Oliver Campbell, representing the claimants, said in court documents that certain Mercedes-Benz vehicles contained technology designed to lower NOx emissions, but that only worked properly at particular temperatures. However, lawyers representing Mercedes-Benz denied its vehicles contained defeat devices, saying there was no reduction in the effectiveness of their emissions control systems.

On tap, we've got stories on why not-so-flashy land is actually the hottest investment on Wall Street, the firms minting money by navigating FTX's bankruptcy, and the coolest houses on Airbnb. It's only February, but the Ides of March might be coming to Goldman Sachs. We've talked at length over how people are looking to pin the blame on Solomon as things have soured at Goldman. Certain issues have been easier to overlook than others, but the bank recently broke a cardinal rule of Wall Street: Don't mess with bankers' compensation. Forget beachfront, the hottest real estate for Wall Street is industrial land.
A decline in morale at the Wall Street firm concerns some Goldman partners. Here are their concerns about CEO David Solomon, who addressed the partners in Miami. CEO David Solomon addressed Goldman Sachs' partners today at the firm's annual partners meeting in Miami. There's little history for Goldman partners taking their concerns directly to the board. Since then, according to someone who has spoken to investors, more shareholders have questioned how long Solomon can last as Goldman's CEO.
