  + stars: | 2023-10-19 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +6 min
Israel has responded by pounding Gaza with air strikes, killing thousands, and has said it will act to free the hostages while wiping out Hamas. Hamas has suggested the hostages could be swapped for approximately 6,000 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. Israel has said that there will be no end to the blockade of the enclave without freedom for Israeli hostages. Israel says the hostages were taken to Gaza but their exact whereabouts within the enclave are unknown, making their rescue more complicated. U.S. President Joe Biden said his administration is "workin’ like hell" to find American hostages held by Hamas.

Michael Nagle | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe largest American banks have been quietly laying off workers all year — and some of the deepest cuts are yet to come. The moves come after a two-year hiring boom during the pandemic, fueled by a surge in Wall Street activity. "Banks are cutting costs where they can because things are really uncertain next year," Chris Marinac, research director at Janney Montgomery Scott, said in a phone interview. In the coming weeks, the bank will terminate around 1% or 2% of its employees, according to a person with knowledge of the plans. The bank has cut about 2% of its workforce this year amid a protracted slowdown in investment banking activity.

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's Pedro Sanchez met with Catalan pro-independence party Junts and became the first Spanish prime minister to hold official talks with Basque separatist party EH Bildu on Friday, as the caretaker leader seeks to form a new government. Sanchez's Socialists need support from Catalan and Basque separatist groups to win an investiture vote before Nov. 27 or face a fresh election next year after an inconclusive vote in July. "We're still far from a historic compromise," Junts parliamentary spokesperson Miriam Nogueras said about a potential agreement, after meeting Sanchez. Bildu helped Sanchez form a government in 2020 by abstaining in the investiture vote and has already pledged unconditional support as he seeks a new four-year term in office. "Today's photo of Pedro Sanchez with Bildu ... is undoubtedly a picture of humiliation," said Cuca Gamarra, parliamentary spokesperson for the opposition People's Party.
