The stock market may not go much higher for the rest of 2024, according to HSBC. "We expect to see better entry points once the market re-prices rates expectations." That's compared to market expectations of 140 basis points. "That slowing would likely dampen earnings growth expectations and increase recession probabilities." Tech and consumer discretionary sectors should see the highest earnings growth, according to the firm.

Swedish fintech firm Klarna is launching a monthly subscription plan in the U.S. to lock in its heaviest users ahead of an expected initial public offering this year, the company told CNBC. Buy now, pay later services such as Klarna and Affirm have surged in popularity in recent years as more Americans rely on a new, fintech-enabled form of credit. When Klarna users shop outside the firm's network of 500,000 retailers — at places such as Walmart, Target, Amazon and Costco — they pay $1 to $2 in transaction fees. "The main proposition of Klarna Plus right now is that you don't pay any service fees," Sandstrom said. "So if you love Klarna and if you love shopping at Target and Walmart, it makes a ton of sense financially."

Generative artificial intelligence won't take jobs from retail workers; instead, it will make them better at their jobs, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff told attendees at the National Retail Federation's annual conference in New York last week. They're not going to need as many agents," Benioff said. The system was able to augment those agents and make them better," Benioff said. With generative AI, he added, Gucci had taken its customer service agents to "a whole other level." "They're pretty incredible people, using generative AI for the first time," Benioff said.

Read previewSelf-checkout might make shoppers feel less loyal to a store, according to new research. One asked shoppers about their recent grocery-buying habits, including whether they used a self-checkout kiosk or were rung up by a human employee. In it, some shoppers read a short passage about how doing something themselves is rewarding before paying for groceries using self-checkout. But technology aimed at catching shoplifters using self-checkout has caused confrontations between Walmart employees and innocent customers, Business Insider reported. Publicly listed data company LiveRamp's $200 million acquisition of data clean room provider Habu looks set to fire the starting pistol for a more buoyant year of adtech and martech M&A, experts have predicted. He noted that while ad teams aren't using these clean rooms en masse, many have activated them, which bodes well for the Habu acquisition. ID5's technology is deployed by the most online publishers of any identity service, according to Sincera , which measures which adtech companies are used across the industry. LiveRamp, also, could be an acquisition target, Salmon noted, as it builds out new data offerings like the clean rooms it will inherit from Habu. But not everyone is predicting the Habu acquisition will necessarily lead to an influx of M&A around cookieless adtech.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A U.S. District Court judge is standing by her decision to block portions of a public health order from New Mexico's governor that would suspend the right to carry firearms in many public parks in the Albuquerque area, with appeals pending before a higher court. The Monday order from Albuquerque-based Judge Kae Riggs denied a request from the governor to leave in place a temporary ban on firearms in some public places in greater Albuquerque, including most public parks. “Judge Riggs’ opinion ignores this caselaw and the massive amount of historical evidence in the record supporting the constitutionality of the temporary restrictions imposed by the public health order,” Hayden said in an email. The rest of the public health orders have remained intact, including directives for monthly inspections of firearm dealers statewide, reports on gunshot victims at New Mexico hospitals, wastewater testing for illicit substances at schools and more. Votes against the bill were cast by two Republican lawmakers who are pursuing impeachment proceedings against the governor for her emergency health orders on gun violence.

The study comes as some companies remove self-checkout machines and others adjust their self-checkout operations. Regular checkout also makes customers feel that they are receiving the service they are entitled to as customers of that store, the study found. “The saved effort during the checkout process and the customers’ sense of entitlement explain the effect of checkout type on customer loyalty,” the study said. Self-checkout, on the other hand, shifts the work to customers, making them feel less rewarded, the study found. At a handful of stores, Target has restricted self-checkout to customers buying 10 items or fewer.

How to become a billionaire

But, according to one friendly billionaire, Mark Cuban, there's no downside to being one. But by far the most common way to become a billionaire in the US is to make tons of money. If that were Brady's only income, and he saved all of it, it would still take him 50 years to become a billionaire. Others are shares of partnerships (hedge funds or private-equity funds, for example) or licensing agreements (like billionaire Michael Jordan's deal with Nike). Mark Cuban also recently said that becoming a billionaire is all about luck.

If the calculations predict that the trust's remainder interest is zero, the beneficiaries are exempt from estate tax even if the assets actually appreciate by a greater amount. If the trust assets are invested and achieve an annual rate of return of 9% a year, the CLT's remainder will be $2.1 million. Advertisement"It's a fantastic low interest rate play," said Renn. "The problem now is rates have really risen and it's to the point where some investments clearly can outperform a 4% or 5% interest rate, but others might struggle." In this interest rate environment, charitable remainder trusts (CRTs) have better odds.

The study looked at jobs where AI could be used for some sort of computer vision to replace regular human vision. Pretty much across the board, even for big companies like Walmart, they found that it would rarely be worth replacing workers with AI visual detection. Hidden cameras are being found in hotel rooms, house rentals, cruise ships, and even airplane bathrooms, leaving many travelers to wonder: "Could a hidden camera be watching me?" It's no wonder why websites, from YouTube to TikTok, are filled with videos of people recommending simple ways to find hidden cameras. They then connected the hidden cameras to that network, bypassing the home's main network. Tjia said most hidden cameras are made in China, where, ironically, they are banned. NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart Inc. is raising the starting base pay for store managers, while redesigning its bonus plan that will put more of an emphasis on profits for these leaders. Roughly 75% of its store management started out as hourly workers, Walmart said. Walmart said that the store managers' new starting annual base wage ranges will be from $90,000 to $170,000. Walmart announced in January 2023 that U.S. workers would get pay raises the following month, increasing starting wages to between $14 and $19 an hour. Starting wages had previously ranged between $12 and $18 an hour, depending on location.

Now, Walmart is saying it’s going to pay the managers of those stores, charged with that huge responsibility, accordingly, with a new average salary of $128,000 a year. Walmart said Thursday it is boosting the average pay of its store managers from $117,000, or by just over 9%, the retailer announced Thursday. The company told CNN that it hasn’t made any changes to store managers’ pay structures in more than a decade, before a pandemic and all that followed subsequently, including a period of high inflation. Previously, the pay range for store managers was between $65,000 and $170,000, it said. The retailer noted that as many as 75% of its managers began their Walmart careers as hourly workers.

The fees are partially used by the companies to run loyalty programs that award points to cardholders that can be redeemed for things like flights and hotels. The act proposes allowing retailers to choose a cheaper system that would reduce the fees. “This has been one of the biggest lobbying battles of all time, pitting two huge industries, retail versus banking,” said Brian Kelly, the founder of the Points Guy, a travel site that helps users maximize reward points and opposes the act.
