WASHINGTON (AP) — New House Speaker Mike Johnson inherits many of the same problems that bedeviled Republican leaders with far more experience. But can he unite House Republicans where others failed? Trump, who is running for a second White House term, enthusiastically backed Johnson and said he will be “a fantastic speaker." The House Republican Conference is deeply divided on those issues. The intractability of many House Republicans forced McCarthy to turn to Democrats for help in keeping the government running.

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union has reached a tentative agreement with Stellantis, which makes vehicles under the Dodge, Ram, Chrysler and Jeep brands, a source familiar with the negotiations told CNN. The tentative agreement with Stellantis Saturday follows a similar deal reached with Ford Wednesday. Ford’s deal gives union workers sizeable pay and benefits increases to contend with inflation that has taken a bite out of workers paychecks. When the cost-of-living adjustments and guaranteed raises are combined, they are expected to raise Ford workers’ wages 30% or more. At the time the Ford deal was announced, there were 16,600 members on strike at Ford, 14,200 on strike at GM and 14,600 on strike at Stellantis.

The Detroit automaker also pulled its 2023 forecast, citing "uncertainty" over the pending ratification of its new labor deal with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, which is expected to significantly increase labor-related expenses. The company's quarterly report added to the gloom around the EV market, which has seen inflation-wary consumers pull back on some purchases. Evangelical Christian conservatives have long had allies in top Republican leadership in Congress. Religious conservatives cheered Johnson's election Wednesday, after which he brought his Bible to the rostrum before taking the oath of office. “Someone asked me today in the media, ‘People are curious, what does Mike Johnson think about any issue?’” Johnson said Thursday in a Fox News interview. One might call him a happy warrior.”Progressive faith leaders expressed alarm at Johnson‘s election, and his remarks on Wednesday evoking the Bible as saying authorities are chosen by God. There are about 29,000 UAW members currently on strike at GM and Stellantis. That deal still needs to be ratified by a vote of 57,000 UAW members at Ford before it will take effect. If deals are reached at GM and Stellantis by Friday, the union could begin the ratification process at all three at the same time. Membership approval of any deals reached at GM and Stellantis would also be needed before they would take effect. DETROIT (AP) — General Motors and Jeep maker Stellantis are meeting with United Auto Workers bargainers Thursday to see if they can reach a contract agreement that mirrors a deal signed with crosstown rival Ford. Nearly 17,000 striking workers at Ford left the picket lines when the agreement was announced Wednesday night and will return to work shortly. About 57,000 Ford workers still have to vote on the tentative pact. It wasn't clear what Ford agreed to in terms of battery factories. Ford had announced plans to build two battery factories in Kentucky, one in Tennessee and another in Michigan, but the Michigan plant is now on hold.

TRUMP ELECTION FIGHTFollowing Trump's defeat, Johnson crafted a legal brief, signed by 125 other House Republicans, that sought to persuade the Supreme Court to reject election results from several contested states Trump had lost to Biden. Johnson stuck with those arguments even after the Supreme Court rejected the case. Hours later, Johnson and 138 other House Republicans voted against certifying Biden's victory. Foley said a House speaker could, in theory, refuse to follow the law or even declare themselves acting president. A House speaker also would have the ability to influence proceedings if it had to declare a winner if no candidate won a majority of electoral votes.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Ford on Thursday reported significant growth in the third quarter, although its financial results fell short of Wall Street estimates. The results came out just a day after Ford reached a tentative contract agreement with the United Auto Workers union. The Ford deal could set the pattern for agreements with the other two automakers, where workers will remain on strike. The UAW called on all workers at Ford to return to their jobs and said that will put pressure on GM and Stellantis to bargain. After three weeks of infighting, division and tensions that left the House paralyzed they will again attempt to elect a speaker this afternoon. Members can also opt to vote PRESENT, which casts no vote. Additionally, Massie this morning said he would support Johnson after voting present last night. Remember, the math is tricky here: The prevailing candidate will be the one who wins 50% +1 of the total number of the House voting for a person. Should a member not vote or vote present, that will drop the target number that a candidate needs to reach.

But if the UAW can reach a tentative agreement with Ford, it would be used as a model to seek similar contract settlements with GM and Stellantis. Typically, during past auto strikes, a UAW deal with one automaker has led the other companies to match it with their own settlements. About 32% of the union’s 146,000 members at the automakers are now on strike and getting by on $500 per week in strike pay. The UAW also wants traditional defined-benefit pension plans restored for workers who were hired after 2007, an end to varying tiers of wages for UAW workers, pension increases for retirees and other benefits. One key issue is whether to extend the national UAW contract to 11 U.S. electric vehicle battery factories.

He attached remarks by Johnson praising Louisiana's abortion ban and penalty of "hard labor for 1-10 years" and fines of $10,000-$100,000 for those who perform abortions. The Biden-Harris campaign and other groups circulated and posted images of three bills Johnson has sponsored that the Democrats said would "ban abortion nationwide." Already, six states – Michigan, California, Vermont, Kentucky, Kansas and Montana – have passed referendums that either enshrined abortion rights or rejected efforts to undo the right to abortion. Another referendum, one that would guarantee abortion rights, is on the ballot next month in Ohio. These numbers have Democrats believing they can keep the White House and flip the House – and Johnson has put a face to that effort.

Total economic losses from the auto workers' strike have reached $9.3 billon, the Anderson Economic Group said earlier this week. Getting the deal ratified will be up to Fain and UAW leaders, and that is not assured. UAW workers at the company now called Stellantis rejected a proposal endorsed by UAW leaders in 2015.
