The database giant's overall revenue grew 18% in the quarter from the same period last year, and its cloud revenue grew 45% to $3.6 billion. That's including the contributions of Cerner, the medical-records company Oracle bought for $28 billion in a big bet on the healthcare market. But it still lags far behind Amazon, Microsoft, and Google in cloud market share, which means it can't afford to stop investing in its cloud platform. The capability allows Amazon Web Services customers to use Oracle's database without leaving AWS. Sources said Oracle's cloud group was virtually unaffected by the cuts.

As an emerging alternative to the traditional computer, JPMorgan execs believe quantum computing could upend how finance firms perform computations. Unlike classical computers, which can store only a one or a zero, quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits. Qubits can store multiple values at the same time, which theoretically gives the quantum computers big speed advantages. Meanwhile, Fidelity has been exploring the potential of quantum computing in wealth management. Wells Fargo, too, has invested in quantum computing to process complex data structures used for fraud detection.
Current and former Tanium employees say the company has been tightening its belt. Tanium had two rounds of job cuts in the past month as internal hopes for its IPO faded. "Plenty of ink has been spilled over the past few months on this topic," a Tanium spokesperson said of its IPO plans. Even so, many rank-and-file employees are skeptical that either an acquisition or IPO will happen, a current employee said. "All well run organizations look for ways to simplify their structures and adapt to meet changing business requirements and industry shifts," the Tanium spokesperson said.
Analysts were skeptical of the Broadcom acquisition from the startFrom the get-go, Broadcom's plan to buy VMware seemed far-fetched. Read more:Customers and employees tell Insider the worst is yet to comeWork at VMware quickly lost meaning for employees under the threat of Broadcom's impending acquisition. Meanwhile, VMware customers are starting to feel the ripple effects. Since the Broadcom deal was announced, VMware employees have reported "aggressive" recruiter outreach from giants like Amazon Web Services, Google, and IBM. They told Insider about their plans to use the buyout to get closer to VMware customers.
Ransomware is following the business and distribution model that made cloud giants so successful. Experts say it's so easy to buy ransomware tool kits that hackers can make a monthly income from it. In the same vein, ransomware developers are taking care of back-end operations to get hackers up and running. Today's ransomware gig economy includes a network of behind-the-scenes operatorsThe ransomware gig economy behind ransomware-as-a-service programs has also expanded rapidly over the past two years. Record-breaking payouts include a $4.4 million ransom secured by hackers that attacked the fuel-pipeline operator Colonial Pipeline in 2021.
But some partners say they're optimistic and see an opportunity to cozy up to VMware customers. In fact, several VMware partners view the seismic buyout as an opportunity and hope to use it to their advantage. Even those who weren't as optimistic about Broadcom's takeover told Insider the 24-year-old company was in need of a shake-up. Why VMware partners are optimisticBefore the acquisition announcement, Broadcom told investors the firm was "totally focused on the priorities" of 600 top strategic accounts. "Broadcom is where good software goes to die," an employee from a VMware partner told Insider.
Oracle's marketing team "imploded" following layoffs and the departure of its CMO this summer. A source told Insider that means salespeople will be selling products to sectors they never had before, including healthcare, which is now a key focus with Cerner. Plus, products like Oracle's cloud infrastructure face competition from tech giants like Amazon, making marketing a key lever in that fight. That morning, nearly 50% of some marketing groups received phone calls that they were being laid off, including Kelman's senior staff, multiple sources told Insider. Oracle's marketing structure, as it once was, is gone.
VMware employees are leaving the firm in droves after Broadcom announced its plans to buy the firm. Employees told Insider they received an "onslaught" of recruiter emails after the announcement. Days after the chip firm Broadcom announced a $61 billion deal to acquire the cloud-computing company VMware, recruiters could sense the malaise within VMware — and they pounced. Seven current and recent VMware employees said they'd been approached by recruiters in large volumes following the announcement of the acquisition. Unless I'm actively looking and applying for positions, I haven't been directly reached out to," the engineer told Insider.
After 28 years, 'Day 2' finally arrives at Amazon

Amazon is known for "Day 1" culture, maintaining a nimble mindset found on a startup's first day. This is a big challenge facing Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, who replaced founder Jeff Bezos last year. On May 26, Amazon retail CEO Dave Clark held a fireside chat with employees at an internal event called Fishbowl. But 28 years on, Day 2 has finally arrived, according to more than a dozen current and former Amazon employees who cited problems including a stodgy engineering culture, extra management layers, and rising red tape. "Historically Amazon was one of the best places for builders, but now when people want to build, they leave Amazon," this person said.
We hold energy companies because of their ability to generate strong free cash flows and return money to shareholders. But we readily admit we should have trimmed some of our positions much earlier when oil prices peaked. If energy prices fall, our energy stocks may get hit, but our holdings that are currently experiencing margin pressure due to high energy prices will get some relief. Remember, even if our energy stocks go down, they're paying us in dividends and buybacks to hang tight. And if production can't keep up with demand, oil prices go back up, which serves oil and energy companies well.
Here are 14 power players on Wall Street leading the industry's push into the cloud. Finance hasn't always been open to public-cloud technology, largely due to security and regulatory concerns. Cloud technology has now percolated through nearly every nook and cranny of Wall Street, affecting everything from investment banking to risk management and marketing. What's motivated the recent trend stems from two things that typically elicit change at financial firms: saving money and moving faster. But at least 30 Wall Street firms and well-known fintechs have publicly sided with one provider as a primary partner. "If you look at Wall Street, they have tens of thousands of people in back offices. Take Citibank, which accidentally wired $900 million to Revlon lenders in what is considered one of the largest blunders ever on Wall Street.
In a Wednesday-morning email to Amazon Flex drivers, the network of thousands of independent contractors who deliver Amazon packages in their own vehicles, Amazon assured drivers they would be paid for the time they had been scheduled to work Tuesday during the outage. The email added that the app Flex drivers use to schedule shifts, route deliveries, and check their earnings continued to experience glitches. Drivers who finished their shifts during the outage said they couldn't find a record they ever delivered their packages. "Screenshot EVERYTHING," one Flex driver told the members of a Facebook group for drivers in the Seattle area on Tuesday. The company recently agreed to repay almost $60 million in withheld driver tips after a Federal Trade Commission investigation.

Amazon was relatively quiet about quantum computing until it announced Amazon Braket in 2019. Amazon Web Services has been ramping up its quantum computing partnerships in the past few months. Along with that, AWS will offer cloud software from Quantum Computing Inc., which helps companies solve business problems using quantum computing, and it recently partnered with BMW to launch a quantum computing challenge to crowdsource automative projects in the field. That silence ended in 2019 when AWS announced its quantum computing service, Amazon Braket. In quantum computing, there's a lot of "noise" that gets in the way of solving problems, so this approach aims to reduce errors.

On July 5, Andy Jassy officially became Amazon CEO, succeeding Jeff Bezos, who steps into the position of executive chairman. When Amazon Web Services CEO Andy Jassy has a big decision to make, it usually comes at the Chop. "If you go to a Chop meeting with Andy, you better be ready," one former senior-level employee told Insider. Though he's one of the longest-serving executives at Amazon and a close confidant of CEO Jeff Bezos, Jassy still remains relatively little-known outside tech circles. Early on in the pandemic, Jassy told AWS employees that "the world is relying on Amazon," according to an email seen by Insider.
