AdvertisementAdvertisementThe federal courts have spiked an investigation into racist text messages sent by a conservative activist-turned-law clerk who got jobs working alongside two federal judges with the full-throated support of Clarence Thomas . She also landed clerkships with two federal judges — Judge Corey Maze, a federal district judge in Alabama, and Judge William Pryor, an influential appellate judge. Last year, a federal judicial panel ordered that an investigation take place into whether Clanton actually sent the texts. After finishing law school, Clanton clerked for Maze, a federal judge in Anniston, Alabama from 2022 to 2023. Judge Debra Livington, the Second Circuit's chief judge, wrote in 2022 that Judges Pryor and Maze simply concluded that the New Yorker's reporting wasn't true.

EXCESSIVE VOLUME has been on-trend in menswear for a while, but the expansion has generally been outward, not down. Now, designers are elongating everything from knits to shirts, but the main event is sidewalk-skimming coats. Extra-long styles dominated the fall shows in January, casting heavy shadows on runways from Saint Laurent to Loewe. With fall here, I wanted to see if this elongated elegance translated to the real world. Would the coats’ hems gather grime on a subway platform or catch in a taxi’s door?

BARCELONA, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Catalan separatist party Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) reached a deal with Spain's Socialists (PSOE) to support acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's bid for a second term, both parties said on Thursday. However, the crucial backing of rival party Junts remains pending amid last-minute negotiations. Seeking the support of the Catalan parties, Sanchez said on Saturday he favoured granting an amnesty to people involved with Catalonia's failed 2017 independence bid. The agreement with ERC included "an amnesty for all", the Catalan party's chairman Oriol Junqueras told reporters, without elaborating. Junts held a meeting in Brussels to decide whether to back Sanchez's investiture, but it ended without an agreement with the PSOE, said a Junts source.

“It was awfully easy money,” Charlie Munger, Buffett’s longtime lieutenant and vice chair of Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA), said in an interview with the Acquired podcast released this week. The firms backed by Berkshire — Itochu, Marubeni, Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsui & Co., and Sumitomo — are known as “sogo shosha” or general trading companies in Japan. “These trading companies were really entrenched, old companies, and they had all these cheap copper mines and rubber plantations, and so you could borrow [easily],” Munger added. Buffett’s decision to invest in Japan has buoyed optimism about prospects in the world’s third largest economy. The legendary investor has previously cheered “the future of Japan,” casting more attention to the country from other foreign backers.

Election Day is a year away, but key allies of former President Donald J. Trump are already thinking about staffing a potential administration, including by filling White House and agency legal positions with aggressive and ideologically like-minded lawyers. Trump allies are preparing to populate a new administration with a different breed of lawyer — a departure from the type that stymied part of his first-term agenda and that despite their mainstream conservative credentials are seen as too cautious by people close to the former president. They are seeking lawyers in federal agencies and in the White House committed to his “America First” ideology and willing to use edgy theories to advance his cause. It is too early to say with any certainty whom Mr. Trump would select were he to win a second term starting in 2025. But several conservative nonprofits, staffed by people who are likely to take on senior White House positions if there is a second Trump administration, have been putting together lists of prospects.

Five Minutes That Will Make You Love Thelonious Monk

I was just smiling and thinking about being at Zinc Bar in the West Village, talking to someone special. It’s become a beautiful mainstay in my vault of “deeper cuts” and I often head over to the “Thelonious Alone in San Francisco” album to listen to it. Listen on YouTube◆ ◆ ◆Andrew Winistorfer, writer and reissue producer“Ugly Beauty”Listening to Thelonious Monk sometimes feels like listening to Monk listening to Monk; he spent much of his recorded output reworking, rerecording and recontextualizing his masterwork compositions like “Ruby, My Dear” and “Crepuscule With Nellie” across multiple albums. The Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall is otherworldly. In contemporary music, I compare Dilla to Monk because of his placement of samples, challenging our idea of rhythm and hesitation.

Close allies of Donald J. Trump are preparing to populate a new administration with a more aggressive breed of right-wing lawyer, dispensing with traditional conservatives who they believe stymied his agenda in his first term. The allies have been drawing up lists of lawyers they view as ideologically and temperamentally suited to serve in a second Trump administration. Now, as Trump allies grow more confident in an election victory next fall, several outside groups, staffed by former Trump officials who are expected to serve in senior roles if he wins, have begun parallel personnel efforts. But in a striking shift, Trump allies are building new recruiting pipelines separate from the Federalist Society. In addition, The New York Times interviewed former senior lawyers in the Trump administration and other allies who have remained close to the president and are likely to serve in a second term.

Fed holds rates steady, upgrades assessment of economic growth
  + stars: | 2023-11-01 | by ( Jeff Cox | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
watch nowThe Federal Reserve on Wednesday again held benchmark interest rates steady amid a backdrop of a growing economy and labor market and inflation that is still well above the central bank's target. This was the second consecutive meeting that the Federal Open Market Committee chose to hold, following a string of 11 rate hikes, including four in 2023. He also said the risks around the Fed doing too much or too little to fight inflation have become more balanced. The increases have been targeted at easing economic growth and bringing a supply and demand mismatch in the labor market back into balance. The post-meeting statement indicated that the Fed sees the economy holding strong despite the rate hikes, a position in itself that could prompt policymakers into a prolonged tightening stance.

UK's IG Group says it expects to cut 10% of workforce

Oct 31 (Reuters) - British online trading platform IG Group (IGG.L) on Tuesday said it would cut 10% of its headcount as part of cost-saving measures to drive operating margin expansion and become a leaner fintech firm. IG Group is trying to bolster its margins as the number of active clients on its platforms declines because of tough market conditions and a hit to customers' disposable income due to a cost-of-living squeeze and rising borrowing costs. IG Group said it expected to reduce about 300 positions worldwide by the end of fiscal 2023, adding that the overall efficiency measures are expected to deliver full run rate cost savings of 50 million pounds ($60.7 million) per year. "We want to position IG Group as a lean fintech company and today's decisive actions ensure a strong platform for future growth," acting CEO Charlie Rozes said in a statement. The company said non-recurring costs to achieve the savings are expected to be about 18 million pounds split across fiscal years 2024 and 2025.

BOURNEMOUTH, England, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Bournemouth came from behind to beat Burnley 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday and claim their first league victory of the season after Philip Billing netted the winner with an extraordinary lob from 40 yards. Bournemouth moved above Burnley into 17th place with six points from 10 matches while Vincent Kompany's side dropped one spot into 19th on four. Despite coming so early in the season, the match had the air of a relegation six-pointer with both teams struggling for form. Burnley, looking for a fifth straight league win over Bournemouth, went ahead in the 11th minute when Charlie Taylor hammered home a fierce volley from outside the box. THE BURLY MEN of Hollywood suit up for red carpets, but when going about their daily lives, many reach for a henley. You know, the collarless shirt that has a handful of buttons down its front and evokes old-fashioned underwear. In recent years Idris Elba, Brad Pitt and all the Chrises (Evans, Hemsworth, Pine and Pratt) have sported this garment, unbuttoned to achieve varying degrees of pectoral exposure. But plenty of mortals like it too. “The henley has a classic, masculine vibe,” said Patrick Burch, founder of Phoenix menswear store Cave & Post Trading Co., adding that fitted ones are a staple for “rugged, in-shape dudes.” According to Harry Hill, 29, a New York writer, podcaster and henley evangelist, a waffle-knit style ranks among the sexiest items a man can wear.
