- German software giant SAP reported a bottom line undermined by heavy restructuring costs, but lifted forecasts for the year ahead. A strengthening dollar, global inflation, and supply chain issues related to Covid lockdowns in China have been major headwinds for many tech companies. But SAP CEO Christian Klein says the European software giant is an exception. Other large tech companies, including Salesforce, Microsoft and IBM have said the strong dollar will hurt profits in the near term. But, SAP is on a path to success in ERP cloud and they control their own destiny."

As for cloud acquisitions, analysts said Amazon's cloud unit didn't often buy companies. Cybersecurity has been a greater focus for Microsoft, AWS, and Google Cloud after the hack of the IT-software company SolarWinds in 2020. In 2019, Google purchased the data-analytics company Looker for $2.6 billion in cash under Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian. With Kurian at the helm, bringing with him the Oracle acquisition playbook, Google Cloud may now have a bigger M&A appetite.

That's the point: A lot of bad news is already priced into Microsoft. Same with Alphabet, also an EPS and revenue miss, with the slowest revenue growth in two years. Collectively, those stocks comprise more than 30% of the market cap of the S & P, and yet the S & P is only down 17%. How is it possible the S & P 500 is down only 17% when 7 of the biggest stocks are down 31%? Of course, just because tech has been in a bear market doesn't mean it can't go deeper in a hole.
