Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond called the devices “a huge problem,” adding they were still investigating whether the shooters used a switch or another type of weapon. “Machine gun conversion devices have no place in our community,” US Attorney Prim Escalona said. Woodfin, the Birmingham mayor, noted that conversion devices are illegal federally but not under state law, and he called on the state legislature to ban the devices. Last week he participated in a demonstration at a Montgomery shooting range in which trained firearm experts tried (and failed) to aim while using the conversion devices. This year, the city of Chicago filed a lawsuit against Glock, alleging the handgun company has failed to prevent the use of conversion devices on its weapons.

CNN —Astronomers have observed a massive pair of jets releasing from a supermassive black hole 7.5 billion light-years from Earth. The megastructure spans 23 million light-years in length, making these black hole jets the largest ever seen, according to new research. Black hole jets can accelerate radiation and particles close to the speed of light, causing them to glow in wavelengths visible to radio telescopes. The massive black hole jets could help answer both. Martijn Oei (pictured), lead author of the new study, and his colleagues will continue their search for massive black hole jets.

Around 100 demonstrators were present on the prison grounds protesting capital punishment and Williams’ execution, Pojmann said. Williams’ team filed a clemency petition to the US Supreme Court last week, noting Missouri’s previous governor had postponed Williams’ execution indefinitely amid questions about the integrity of Williams’ trial. Eric Greitens previously halted Williams’ execution and formed a board to investigate his case and determine whether he should be granted clemency. “The Board investigated Williams’ case for the next six years — until Governor Michael Parson abruptly terminated the process,” Williams’ attorneys wrote. “The Governor’s actions have violated Williams’ constitutional rights and created an exceptionally urgent need for the Court’s attention,” Williams’ attorneys said in court documents.

Former President Donald Trump accused the Justice Department of "downplaying" an alleged assassination plot against him earlier this month and suggested state officials in Florida should take over the investigation and prosecution. "The Kamala Harris/Joe Biden Department of Justice and FBI are mishandling and downplaying the second assassination attempt on my life since July. Trump has attacked the Justice Department for years, accusing the agency of targeting him after it brought charges against him in two separate cases. Florida charges would be much more serious than the ones the FBI has announced," he wrote. DeSantis issued an executive order last week ordering a state investigation into the incident.

The Summary A new study found that some members of an octopus species hunt cooperatively in groups with fish. A new study shows that some members of the species Octopus cyanea maraud around the seafloor in hunting groups with fish, which sometimes include several fish species at once. It’s an indication that at least one octopus species has characteristics and markers of intelligence that scientists once considered common only in vertebrates. These hunting groups typically included several species of reef fish, such as grouper and goatfish. These are the ambush predators, the ones that don’t move, don’t look for prey,” Sampaio said.

Newly released federal data shows the US tech workforce is younger than the workforce at large and getting younger still. Tech workers under 25 are becoming more common, while the proportion of workers older than 40 shrinks. There's an age-old perception that tech workers should be young so they can move fast and break things. One of the top qualifications to land a tech job, it seems, is to possess a birth certificate dated after 1990. Women make up just 22% of tech workers — the same proportion of jobs they held in 2005.

CNN —California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil on Monday for what the state calls a “decades-long campaign of deception” in which the oil and gas giant allegedly misled the public on the merits of plastic recycling. Bonta is also asking the court to rule ExxonMobil must pay civil penalties, among other payments, for the harm inflicted by plastic pollution in California. “For decades, ExxonMobil has been deceiving the public to convince us that plastic recycling could solve the plastic waste and pollution crisis when they clearly knew this wasn’t possible. Recent reports have shown only around 9% of the world’s plastic is recycled, a figure that’s even lower in the US, around 5 to 6%. The next storm that could threaten the United States was beginning to take shape Monday afternoon among a swirl of thunderstorms off the shores of Honduras in the western Caribbean Sea, with forecasters saying there is a strong likelihood that it becomes Helene, the next name in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season storm list. Many of the forecast models that meteorologists use show the storm strengthening rapidly over the next few days before hitting somewhere along the central to eastern Gulf of Mexico coastline Thursday. This storm follows Francine, which spun across the western Gulf of Mexico this month. That storm struggled to organize and only slowly intensified into a weak Category 2 in the final few hours before making landfall in Louisiana and dropping a deluge of rainfall across New Orleans. If this storm system forms more quickly into a named storm across the Caribbean, it is more likely to become a hurricane or even a major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico before it hits land.

But if you were generally tense, anxious, or fearful around your parent or caretaker, there's a chance you were raised by an eggshell parent. An eggshell parent is "often highly unpredictable, and unsafe in some way," she added. Sage shared a few signs you grew up with at least one eggshell parent, and what the long-term impacts of such a relationship can be. She added that eggshell parents often lack self-awareness of how their intense mood swings impact other people, especially their kids. Without that acknowledgment, children of eggshell parents might continue to believe that they "caused" their parents' outbursts, and that they're responsible for managing other people's emotions.

Federal and state police across the country warned about a rise in the number of email "sextortion" scams this month. The Maryland State Police said in a statement on Thursday that reports of one sextortion scam targeting Gmail users surged in August and September. In these scams, someone tells a victim they have access to embarrassing search history or compromising photos. This means the scammers may have access to your email and even some of your current or former passwords, but they do not have access to your computer or search history. The Maryland State Police say to be cautious of any "unsolicited" emails you receive to your Gmail account to avoid being the victim of a scam.
