CNN —Donald Trump’s campaign, which has whiffed in its early attacks on Kamala Harris’ new presidential campaign, will grapple this week for a more effective foothold after the vice president transformed an election of stunning surprises. On Sunday, for instance, he spread a new false conspiracy theory over the size of Harris’ rally crowd in Michigan last week. Trump’s campaign was also forced on Saturday to deny a report in The New York Times that he’d privately referred to Harris as a “b*tch” as he bemoaned her momentum. Therefore, a debate expected between Trump and Harris on ABC on September 10 looms as a pivotal new moment in the campaign. But as Trump has shown in recent days, he still hasn’t worked out a way to respond to the suddenly changed circumstances of the campaign.

Ahead of the event, Musk planned to perform "some system scaling tests" to gauge the X platform's streaming capabilities ahead of the event with Trump. The Trump interview is Musk's latest high profile foray into the 2024 presidential race. The PAC set out to mobilize 800,000 voters for Trump in critical swing states.

In today's big story, we're looking at how the startup landscape is drastically changing thanks to the entrance of private-equity firms and the rise of acquihires . Private equity is filling the gap left by a frozen IPO market and corporates unwilling or unable to cut deals, writes Business Insider's Melia Russell. Perhaps most importantly, a PE deal means equity holders get cash immediately, unlike an IPO that has some holding periods. Acquihires where the brains behind buzzy AI startups sell themselves (instead of the entire company) to bigger players are in vogue, writes BI's Ben Bergman and Sri Muppidi. When Donald Trump was president, he used Twitter to set policy, attack his critics and appeal to his followers. Trump is scheduled to appear tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern on X for an interview with the website’s owner, Elon Musk. For Trump, the event could offer an opportunity to regain some of the spotlight from Harris, whose new and energetic candidacy has forced his campaign to recalibrate its strategy less than three months before Election Day. Polls by The New York Times and Siena College released this weekend showed Harris with leads in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. “When I talk to Trump allies and advisers, many of them view the last three weeks as Trump’s worst sustained performance in a very long time,” Jonathan Swan, our politics reporter, said.

Donald Trump has been using an ugly word to describe Vice President Kamala Harris. For example, Elon Musk, in a post on X, declared “Kamala is quite literally a communist,” demonstrating, among other things, that he quite literally doesn’t know the meaning of “literally.”Now, Harris obviously isn’t a communist. So why does Trump say that she is? Well, red-baiting, like race-baiting — which Trump also does when it comes to Harris — is very much part of the American political tradition. In these countries, politicians like Harris, who supports a free-market economy with a robust social safety net, are known as social democrats.

And California isn't the only place where Tesla's chokehold on the EV market is beginning to slip. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has attributed lackluster sales to high interest rates and economic uncertainty in the US. But, while Tesla's sales are dropping, the EV market as a whole is expanding, including in California. Similarly, data from CNCDA shows that EV sales in California hit their second-highest quarter on record in July.

"I think that Musk is trying to get some PR mileage out of RICO without actually filing a RICO claim here," Grell said. It was meant to be another night of violence at the hands of the far right. “It shows that when everyone comes out to support, their numbers dwindle.”Large crowds gathered at an anti-racism protest in Walthamstow on Wednesday, where far-right violence had been expected. The fury simmering in a subset of White Britain remains a live danger; these riots were shocking, but not entirely surprising. “I normally walk through this city center all the time,” Nadeem Akhtar, 18, told CNN in the northern English city of Sheffield, where angry riots took place. CNN —Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has said he’s taking steps to ban the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, in the country for 10 days, after a public dispute with its owner Elon Musk over the contested election that Maduro claimed to have won. Maduro’s announcement comes after he and Musk publicly exchanged criticism over a Venezuelan election that Maduro claimed to win, but which the United States and other Western countries say he lost. Musk has said on X that “Maduro is not a good guy” and accused him of “major election fraud.” Maduro in return has accused Musk of conspiring against his country. The US said last week “it is clear” that Maduro lost the popular vote in Venezuela’s election, as a key opposition leader said she was in hiding in fear for her life. Protests broke out across Venezuela after the country’s electoral body, which is stacked with regime allies, announced Maduro as the winner with 51% of the votes.

New York CNN —A major ad industry group is shutting down, days after Elon Musk-owned X filed a lawsuit that claimed the group illegally conspired to boycott advertising on his platform. The end of GARM marks a temporary victory for Musk and X CEO Linda Yaccarino, even though a judge hasn’t made a ruling yet. “Everyone can see that advertising on X is a treacherous business relationship for advertisers,” they said. Following that, brands’ faced issues where their ads were placed next to illegal or harmful content, the group said in a statement. GARM said its group reduced such ads from 6.1% in 2020 to 1.7% in 2023.

This escalated into days of riots in the U.K. that saw attacks on mosques, immigration centers and hotels that house asylum seekers. The disinformation circulated online tapped into pre-existing biases and prejudice, Ondrak explained, adding that incorrect reports often thrive at times of heightened emotions. Many of the right-wing protestors claim the high number of migrants in the U.K. fuels crime and violence. Ondrak also noted that many groups that had previously circulated false information about the attack had started walking it back, saying it was a hoax. A former Twitter board member, Omid Kordestani, sued the social media company owned by Elon Musk on Friday, claiming that the billionaire refused to cash out more than $20 million worth of shares. Mr. Kordestani, who joined Twitter’s board in 2015 and helped oversee the sale of the company to Mr. Musk in 2022, received most of his compensation in stock. But after Mr. Musk bought the company, now called X, he refused to pay Mr. Kordestani for those shares, the lawsuit said. A representative for X did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Such a public battle between a former board member and the company he once helped manage is rare — most boardroom disputes are settled quietly behind the scenes.

The Italian fashion house's alcohol-free fragrance mist for dogs, which costs £83 ($105) on its U.K. website, is inspired by Fefé, the pet dog of brand-owner Domenico Dolce. However, the fragrance has drawn some concern from animal welfare organizations and experts who warn that perfumes can interfere with a dog's sense of smell. Oils such as ylang ylang which is included in Fefé, can also have a positive effect, he said. RSPCA's Potter also noted that some "lightly-scented products," which do not use aversive scents or interfere with a dog's sense of smell, can have a calming effect.
