The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Iron Lake near the border of Canada at 7:21 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release. Two canoes had gone over Curtain Falls in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, the sheriff’s office said. Shortly after midnight, a helicopter was used to rescue one injured person and one uninjured person, according to the sheriff’s office. CNN —A federal judge has granted a motion to reopen the sentencing in the case against David DePape, the man convicted of the 2022 attack on House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul, because he did not get a chance to speak during his sentencing hearing Friday. In the early hours of Jan. 29, 2022, as a snowstorm raged, a 46-year-old Boston police officer, John O’Keefe, was discovered unresponsive outside the home of a fellow officer in Canton, Mass. Officer O’Keefe had severe head injuries and hypothermia and was pronounced dead that morning. Ms. Read was arrested three days later, and the case has transfixed Boston ever since. Ms. Read, 44, is now on trial in a Massachusetts courtroom, accused of killing Officer O’Keefe by backing into him with her sport utility vehicle after an argument and then leaving the scene. Her lawyers, along with a vocal and devoted squad of defenders, say she is innocent, alleging a sweeping conspiracy and cover-up by law enforcement officials to hide the truth about the murder.

Slovakia’s populist prime minister, Robert Fico, was shot and seriously wounded on Wednesday in what the government called an assassination attempt. A post on the prime minister’s official and verified Facebook page said that Mr. Fico was in “life-threatening condition” after sustaining “multiple” gunshot wounds. Local media reported that the attack unfolded in the central Slovak town of Handlova, where Mr. Fico, a veteran politician, had been meeting with supporters. Mr. Fico has aligned with the Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orban, in opposing aid to Ukraine and challenging mainstream opinions within the European Union. On Wednesday, Mr. Orban was quick to send well wishes to Mr. Fico, whom he called “my friend.”“We pray for his health and quick recovery,” Mr. Orban wrote on social media.
