.SPX YTD mountain S & P 500 YTD My last column before a late-summer hiatus, published July 15 with the S & P about 1% higher than Friday's close, began: "Enough for now? There's been no net progress since then after a modest push higher, 5% pullback and partial bounce. There's no doubt the market is sensitive to these yield moves, unsure how the economy and market might handle them. There's an insistence among plenty of cautious market participants that stocks are only as high as they are because eventual Fed rate cuts are anticipated. Not to be too literal, but this at least would suggest some more seasonal choppiness before a potential break higher.

Official data on Thursday also showed that the People's Bank of China increased its gold holdings to 69.62 million fine troy ounces at end-August. Local gold prices were trading around 59,200 rupees per 10 grams on Friday, up nearly 2% in three weeks. The biopharmaceutical sector is poised to bounce back this year, and Gilead Sciences could be a key beneficiary, according to Bank of America. Analyst Geoff Meacham upgraded Gilead to buy from neutral. He increased his target price for the stock by $7 to $95, which suggests shares stand to gain 28.5% from where they closed Thursday. Shares of California-based Gilead have dropped 13.9% so far this year. "With the potential for broader interest in the sector, we are more optimistic on performance into 2H23," Meacham said.

The All Blacks, beaten for the first time in 32 World Cup pool games, had two Mark Telea tries and a sole penalty by Richie Mo'unga to show for themselves. "We felt there was a lot of pressure in the first half, it took, us time to relax and they scored quickly and easily. Sixteen years after losing their opening World Cup game as hosts against Argentina, France rose to the occasion, beating the All Blacks for the second time in a row. New Zealand were on the brink of the line again and surprisingly opted for the kick when France were penalised. France started the second half with a more playful mindset but were punished right away for their defensive nonchalance.

Last year, for a column I was writing about the power that large asset managers like BlackRock and Vanguard exert over the global economy, I called up Vivek Ramaswamy. Today, I mostly don’t even use that word anymore; it’s not part of my vernacular today. I just wanted you to know that, since I saw you mused about the etymology of the title in your piece. It certainly wasn’t cooked up in a Fox News lab, and in all honesty the goal wasn’t to trigger anyone. but that he represents a distinct, very familiar flavor of irritation: He’s the epitome of millennial hustle culture, less a Tracy Flick know-it-all than a viral LinkedIn post come to life.

Spain men's coach dodges questions about women's team scandal

TBILISI, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Spain men's coach Luis de la Fuente tried to avoid questions on Thursday about the scandal sparked by football federation boss Luis Rubiales' unsolicited kiss of player Jenni Hermoso after her team's victory in the Women's World Cup. We need to win tomorrow with our eyes on qualifying for the European Championship and we are only focused on that," De La Fuente told a press conference. Spain midfielder Rodri said the players had a meeting with De La Fuente to address the issue. "The first thing we did was get together to talk about the situation and the responsibility of expressing ourselves as a Spain men's team," Rodri said. It is an unpleasant situation that we all find ourselves in, including the coach.

That has put pressure on risky EM currencies, echoing the dynamics observed last year when the Fed began raising rates. In the Sept. 1-6 poll, almost all beaten-down emerging market currencies were forecast to move little, or trade modestly higher against the dollar in a year, with some making small gains in three months. The underperformance of China has probably been the biggest story holding back EM currencies." Earlier this year, many analysts expected China's reopening to boost the yuan and other EM currencies, especially those exporting commodities to the world's second-largest economy, but this scenario did not unfold as anticipated. Through the end of this year, we believe most EM Asia currencies can weaken," said Nick Bennenbroek, international economist at Wells Fargo.

Worldwide desktop and mobile website visits to the ChatGPT website decreased by 3.2% to 1.43 billion in August, following approximately 10% drops from each of the previous two months. U.S. ChatGPT traffic in August rose slightly, in concert with American schools being back in session. OpenAI also released the ChatGPT app on the iOS system in May, which could sap some traffic from its website. Besides ChatGPT, OpenAI makes money by selling access to its AI models for developers and enterprises directly and through a partnership with Microsoft, which invested over $10 billion into the company.

NEW YORK (AP) — Alexander Zverev felt he had to react when he heard a fan use language from Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime during his U.S. Open match.
