Former President Donald Trump is a polls guy. He’s currently languishing in fourth place, according to polls, behind Trump, Florida Gov. “In 2016, we experienced the phenomenon of the silent Trump voter, those who were secretly for Trump but feared being ostracized if they said so publicly,” he wrote. “A majority of the party is Maybe Trump,” Ayres says. A separate New Hampshire primary poll from Monmouth University and The Washington Post taken Nov. 9-14 shows similar results.

A Gallup poll from October found 50% of Americans believe capital punishment is applied unfairly, compared to 47% who believe it is fairly implemented, Maher said. Nearly 200 death row exonerations since 1975, including three in 2023, also have helped changed people's minds about the fairness of the death penalty, Maher said. In recent years, various individuals across the country, including conservative legislators, have raised concerns about the death penalty or debated its future, Grosso said. One allows the death penalty in child rape convictions, despite a U.S. Supreme Court ruling banning capital punishment in such cases. Texas, the nation’s busiest capital punishment state, has not been immune to the ongoing debate over the death penalty.

It's a high-risk gambit for the Florida governor, Republican strategists said. They insist Newsom could be a presidential contender as early as next year, though the governor has pledged to stand behind Biden's bid. "Ron DeSantis looks forward to sharing the stark contrast between his vision to revive our nation and Newsom's blueprint for failure," DeSantis campaign manager James Uthmeier said in an email. Trump, according to aggregates of national opinion polls, holds about a 50-percentage-point lead over her, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also in the mix. Trump also has large leads in early Republican nominating states such as Iowa and New Hampshire. The polls show her tied with DeSantis in Iowa and surpassing him in New Hampshire. Carson Beck and Jalen Milroe had to replace big-name quarterbacks at programs with national title-or-bust expectations. His turning point may have come in the SEC opener against South Carolina, when Beck rallied Georgia from a 14-3 halftime deficit to win 24-14. And Milroe has done something even Young couldn't do last season: lead the Tide to the SEC title game. Then Milroe was back, leading the Tide to a perfect SEC season and making their biggest play in the Iron Bowl. Brian Swensen, a national political director for Ramaswamy who had been focusing much of his time on the crucial early nominating state of New Hampshire, left the former biotech executive's presidential campaign as it has struggled to gain traction. A Trump aide said Swensen will now help the former president's campaign in Nevada, another early state in the Republican nomination battle. Ramaswamy, 38, who has staked out far-right positions on many issues and has been a fervent defender of Trump, created political buzz early in his campaign with combative, attention-grabbing debate performances. Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for Ramaswamy's campaign, said Swensen's departure had nothing to do with internal problems within the campaign. She said the appointment of Mike Biundo, a veteran political operative from New Hampshire, as Ramaswamy's national political adviser had rendered Swensen's New Hampshire role less relevant.

Senate Republicans anticipate that a resolution is near to Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s holds on Pentagon promotions, 10 months into the standoff that has spurred frustrations throughout the chamber. “You just get the feeling that Sen. Tuberville is about to find an off-ramp,” Sen. Roger Wicker, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Service Committee, told reporters on Wednesday. And another alternative would involve Tuberville continuing his protest of the policy while some lower-level promotions are allowed to move forward. It remained unclear which path forward Tuberville would agree to to end his hold. But Senate Republicans broadly appeared eager to get things moving once again.
