DETROIT — Volkswagen Group increased its planned investment for a joint venture with electric vehicle startup Rivian Automotive to $5.8 billion as the companies have broader aspirations than they initially announced for the team-up. Investors were impressed with the details of the deal, sending shares of Rivian up 13% in trading Wednesday. The companies said they expect roughly 1,000 people to work for the joint venture. But VW's capital to Rivian isn't guaranteed, and neither is the success of the deal. The automotive industry has seen a number of major mergers and joint ventures that don't result in long-term successes.

According to a press statement sent to CNN by Sotheby’s, which will auction the tablet in New York next month, the stone was sold to a scholar in 1943. The U.S. is one of few developed nations without federal laws that provide workers paid time off, and just over a dozen states have their own laws to offer paid sick leave. But last week, Americans in more states – Alaska, Missouri and Nebraska – voted to pass new ballot measures that will bring paid sick leave requirements to their workplaces in 2025. Prior to the November election, 15 states and Washington, D.C., had their own paid sick leave laws, as do a number of cities and localities across the country. MarylandWorkers at businesses with 15 or more employees accrue one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. Rhode IslandFull-time workers at businesses with 18 or more employees get up to 40 hours of paid sick leave per year.

Republicans will keep control of the House of Representatives, NBC News projected Wednesday. Going into the election, House Republicans aimed to expand their razor-thin majority of 220 seats, compared to the 212 held by Democrats. ☆ BlackRock expands its tokenized money market fund to Polygon and other blockchains

BlackRock has expanded its tokenized money market fund to include several more blockchains. The investment manager said Wednesday that its USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL) is now available to investors on the Aptos; Arbitrum; Avalanche; OP Mainnet, formerly known as Optimism; and Polygon blockchains. The BUIDL fund, which BlackRock debuted two months after iShares Bitcoin Trust, its popular bitcoin exchange-traded fund, gives investors an opportunity to earn U.S. dollar yields through a blockchain-based vehicle. The BUIDL fund is tokenized by Securitize, a company BlackRock has invested in that specializes in the tokenization of real-world assets.

Liberty Media announced Wednesday that it's spinning off most assets besides Formula One auto racing into a separate publicly traded company, called Liberty Live, and that CEO Greg Maffei is stepping down at year-end. After the split, Liberty Media will hold Formula One, which Liberty acquired in 2016 and later spun out as a tracking stock, and MotoGP, upon the closing of that transaction. The Liberty Media and Liberty Live split is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025, and the sale of Liberty Broadband to Charter is projected to be completed in mid-2027. "Following today's announcements at Liberty Media and Liberty Broadband, all the Liberty acquisitions completed during my tenure are now in structures where shareholders can have more direct ownership in their upside," Maffei said in a separate release. He's chairman of the board of Liberty Media, Liberty Broadband and Liberty Global.
