Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Cami Ostman, a 56-year-old writer and writing coach from Shoreline, Washington. She wasn't going to do anything with the land, so she said I could have it. I can think of seven friends in my age range who've bought off-grid land or purchased sprinter vans or RVs. In Seattle, I'm accountable to my students and employees, but when I'm on my land, I leave my work behind. There's nothing I miss when I'm in the yurt — it's so ridiculously peaceful.

LONDON — Far-right Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders' hopes of becoming prime minister of the Netherlands are dwindling after coalition talks fell into disarray Tuesday. Wilders took to social media Tuesday evening to berate Omtzigt's withdrawal, calling the decision "incredibly disappointing." I don't understand it at all," Wilders wrote in a post on X, according to a Google translation. However, former Labor Party minister Ronald Plasterk, who has been leading the talks, earlier flagged finances as a major sticking point in talks. Alternatively, if no combination of parties can agree to form a coalition, a new election could be called.

The Netherlands wants this cabinet and now Pieter Omtzigt is throwing in the towel while we were still in discussions until today. Since the election, Wilders’ Party for Freedom has since risen even further in polls, with some suggesting he could win 50 seats if new elections were held. “It is a total surprise to us that Pieter Omtzigt (NSC) has decided to leave the table and stop talking. The four parties that were involved in the talks hold a total of 88 seats — a comfortable majority in the lower house. Talks, however, have been tough, with Omtzigt voicing reservations from the outset about some of Wilders’ policies.

Credit card balances increased by $50 billion, or roughly 5%, in the fourth quarter of 2023, the New York Fed found. As the federal funds rate rose, the prime rate did, as well, and credit card rates followed suit. Why credit card debt keeps rising"Even though $1 trillion in credit card debt is a staggering number to wrap your brain around, the unfortunate truth is that it is only going to keep climbing from here," said Matt Schulz, chief credit analyst at LendingTree. Despite the steep cost, consumers often turn to credit cards, in part because they are more accessible than other types of loans, Schulz said. What to do if you're in credit card debt

Credit card debt as a share of income is still below pre-pandemic levels. Mortgage debt increased 2.8% in 2023, while the delinquency rate increased to 0.82%, up a quarter percentage point from the previous year.

The fact is that gas cars aren’t being weaponized on most of the continent the way they are in America. I’m all in favor of the commendable end to gas cars that Europe has now embraced – a decade or more hence. Of course, that’s only one corner of what’s happened to Paris traffic under the Hidalgo regime. The same toxic, planet-warming emissions are being generated, especially with all that idling in place in endless traffic jams. Perhaps a couple of decades from now when all those gas guzzling cars will be gone entirely?

"After more than 20 years at CBRE Darcy Stacom has decided to leave the company at the end of March to launch her own commercial real estate firm, and we wish her well with her new endeavor," the email read. The end of Stacom's tenure reflects sweeping challenges and generational shifts in commercial real estate. And in 2018, Stacom represented Google in its $2.4 billion acquisition of a new office property overlooking the Hudson River. "She's had an unbelievable career," said Jon Mechanic, chairman of the law firm Fried Frank's real estate practice, who has worked with Stacom on countless deals. New York CNN —Americans — particularly Millennials and those with lower incomes — are becoming increasingly overextended financially: Credit card and auto loan delinquencies have not only surpassed pre-pandemic levels, they’re the highest they’ve been in more than a decade. Debt balances increased across the board, with credit card balances rising $50 billion to hit a new nominal high of $1.13 trillion (when adjusting for inflation, balances have yet to surpass the levels seen in 2008). “Credit card and auto loan transitions into delinquency are still rising above pre-pandemic levels,” Wilbert van der Klaauw, economic research adviser at the New York Fed, said in a statement. “The delinquency numbers are pretty eye-opening, especially when it comes to credit cards,” Matt Schulz, chief credit analyst at LendingTree, told CNN via email. Student loan delinquencies will not be reported to the credit bureaus until later this year.

Like, ‘Oh, are you being serious or are you not?’ No; I am deadly serious when I’m doing these things. I’m just chasing this strange feeling.”Leith’s way of talking about music is a lot like his actual music: blurry and discursive, but also precisely evocative. That strange feeling he’s chasing, for example, is one he compared to being at a wake, where “outward joy and outward sadness” are possible at the same time. Take his opera “Last Days,” which receives its U.S. premiere on Feb. 6 in Los Angeles as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Green Umbrella series. It was a goal that helped settle any nerves Arsenal had before the game and Arteta’s side began dominating the first half. Wild celebrationsThe Emirates erupted as Trossard’s shot squirmed into the net, with Arteta leading the party from the touchline. Arsenal, though, won’t mind the criticism given the team is now back in the hunt for its first league title since 2004. LOS ANGELES (AP) — New Jersey came to the West Coast to kick off Grammy Awards weekend, with native sons Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen teaming up. Bon Jovi hailed Springsteen as “my hero, my friend, my mentor” to a crowd of 2,000 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Instead of performing at the end of the evening as is traditional for the honoree, Bon Jovi got the nearly three-hour show going. Comedian Jim Gaffigan hosted and relentlessly mocked Bon Jovi for his big hair and penchant for wearing short-shorts in the 1980s. “Livin' On a Prayer” became an all-star finale, with Bon Jovi joined onstage by the other performers for a singalong.

DETROIT – Ford Motor started the year with a slight increase in sales, as a large jump in hybrid vehicles offset an 11% decline in all-electric cars and trucks. The Detroit automaker on Friday reported sales rose 4.3% last month from January 2023, led by a 43% jump in hybrid sales and 2.6% uptick in traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines. The spike in hybrid sales is part of Ford's plan to double down on the technology. Despite the focus on hybrids, 90% of Ford's sales last month were traditional cars and trucks. Ford's stock has fallen about 1% in 2024.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A federal lawsuit filed Friday says that a woman who died last February shouldn't have been discharged from a Tennessee hospital, forced to leave despite her pleas for more help and unassisted by security guards and police during a medical emergency. Security officers at the hospital called police Feb. 5, 2023, saying that Edwards had been evaluated and discharged, but she was refusing to leave. The lawsuit filed in Knoxville names three officers who were later disciplined by the city's police department, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel. But she is rebuffed by officers and hospital security guards who become frustrated with her inability to step up into the van and tell her she is faking her incapacity. “This was an emergency medical condition that began and worsened on hospital property and that was unequivocally preventable and treatable,” the lawsuit states.
