Dozens of boats zipped across Casco Bay during the Maine Lobster Boat Races on Saturday. That boat, a 32-footer with a powerful diesel engine, belonged to Jeremy Beal, 45, a large, soft-spoken man who comes from a long line of boat builders and lobstermen. “See, I grew up right in it,” he said between drags of a cigarette while leaning against the rail of his boat on the evening before the big race. For decades, Mr. Beal’s father, Wayne Beal, and an uncle, Calvin Beal, have built boats used by commercial fishers up and down the Maine coast. After years spent learning the family trade, Jeremy took over his dad’s business, Wayne Beal’s Boat Shop, in Jonesport, a seaside town more than 200 miles northeast of Portland.

For investors holding Japanese assets denominated in yen, the decline of the currency led to the value of their gains increasing. McManus isn't the only one who increased his exposure into the Japanese market following the early August sell-off. Before the yen started to strengthen, "Japanese investors could benefit because their lives and portfolios are denominated in yen. As a result, an appreciating yen will help overseas investors realize gains from the Japanese market as it continues its rebound. "This suggests that, if the cycle is heading towards [a] period of persistent yen strength, global investors should overweight Japan," Jefferies said.

While locking their credit won't solve all cybersecurity issues related to stolen Social Security numbers, it's one extra layer of protection parents can implement. Parents can take these steps proactively even if there's nothing to suggest a minor's credit has been compromised such as unexpected credit card solicitations or bills received in the minor's name. It can take some time and effort to lock a child's credit, but the outlay is minimal compared with what can be a lengthy and emotional credit restoration process. Locking a child's credit won't protect against all of these, but it's a solid step in the right direction, financial professionals said. To check to see if their child has a credit report, parents can mail a letter with their request to each of the credit bureaus.

The new rules aim to disrupt the procurement networks that are funneling semiconductors and other technology to Russian forces, who then use them to wage war against Ukraine. They will give the U.S. government expanded authority to prevent products made with U.S. technology from being shipped to Russia, even if those products are manufactured in countries outside of the United States. The penalties also included the addition of 123 entities in Russia, Crimea, China, Turkey, Iran and Cyprus to a so-called entity list. Suppliers are barred from sending companies on the entity list certain products without first obtaining a government license. The government also added certain addresses in Hong Kong and Turkey to the list that were known to set up shell companies, meaning any further shell companies registered to those addresses would face trade restrictions.

The Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays will resume a June 26 game that was suspended for rain in what will be the first game of a doubleheader on Monday. Back in June, Jansen, then playing for the Blue Jays, was at the plate with one out and one on in the top of the second when the game was suspended. “I don’t even know how this works,” Jansen said when asked about the suspended game after he’d been traded to Boston. The Blue Jays will have some funky developments in the game, too. Though the suspended game will end on Aug. 26, it will be officially recorded as having taken place on June 26 in the record books.

While expectations are high and caution is certainly warranted, we don't think it's quite that simple. While the Oscillator and Williams' work do point to possible selling pressure ahead, we don't want to get too bearish. However, we don't think the risks are so elevated as to warrant more than a small cash raise. We still view Nvidia as an "own it, don't trade it" stock, but we also don't keep our heads in the sand. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech gave the stock market a jolt higher, reaffirming expectations for interest rate cuts going forward. Still, I believe the Fed will remain data dependent, which should temper euphoria and keep the S & P 500 in its 2024 range. I want to embrace this range and position accordingly for U.S. equites to again cool off going into September. Volatility has been the overarching theme for August, and I believe the recent uber-sensitivity to macro data will keep markets extraordinarily spastic. Wall Street traders think next week's earnings report from Nvidia is likely to give the chip stock another boost, according to one interpretation of options market pricing. A Piper Sandler research note on Thursday from Benson Durham and Melissa Turner said short-term options on Nvidia look expensive, but that high cost is tilted toward options that serve as bets the stock will rise. So, expensive NVDA options in general don't connote very much investor angst heading into the release," the Piper Sandler report said. The market optimism about Nvidia extends beyond the immediate period after the earnings report, according to Piper Sandler. The Piper Sandler researchers did not take a fundamental position on Nvidia's earnings report.

The first, an all-out kinetic blockade, is the harshest option and is very closely aligned with Chinese military doctrine. Convicted former FTX executive Ryan Salame's domestic partner Michelle Bond has been indicted in New York on federal charges accusing her of conspiring to raise unlawful campaign contributions from FTX for her unsuccessful run for Congress in 2022, prosecutors announced Thursday. Salame and Bond met in June 2021, and were in a relationship by early the following year, according to the indictment. The indictment alleges that Salame, identified only as CC-1, conspired with Bond to commit the crimes, saying that Salame arranged the payment from FTX to Bond. She then allegedly used "almost entirely" all of that money "to fund her campaign illegally," the indictment says. Salame's lawyers claim prosecutors reneged on an agreement to drop their campaign finance probe of Bond as an incentive to get him to plead guilty.

According to an indictment unsealed Thursday, Bond had a fake consulting agreement with FTX, the notorious cryptocurrency exchange run by Sam Bankman-Fried. The $400,000 she received — along with gobs of more stolen money from FTX — fueled her congressional campaign, prosecutors say. The charges against Bond come one day after she finalized a divorce with her previous partner, according to Salame. In total, Salame and FTX gave Bond over $900,000, according to the indictment — far above the legal limits. CNN —The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and NWSL Players Association have a new collective bargaining agreement, one which includes higher pay, expanding benefits and – in a notable move – abolishing the draft. With the new CBA, which will be in place through 2030, the NWSL becomes the first major American professional sports league to abolish its player draft. “The draft is an antiquated model that empowers teams to decide for Players instead of Players deciding for themselves,” NWSLPA president Tori Huster said. This, the league said in its statement announcing the CBA, aligns NWSL standard player agreements with FIFA regulations on the status and transfer of players. “This CBA gives us agency over our business and gives the players agency over their careers.

Judge James Robart told Business Insider a bank that managed his wife's individual retirement account purchased Boeing stock in April 2023. He said as soon as he learned about it, he had the stocks sold; his financial disclosures said the shares were sold on two dates in May and June. Based on the prices that Boeing shares traded at on the days her IRA bought and sold the shares, at least one of the two sales was a money-loser, while the second could have been profitable. He and his family disposed of their Boeing shares more than a year before that decision. The amount of Boeing stock traded isn't much compared with Robart's total wealth.

The U.S. economy created 818,000 fewer jobs than originally reported in the 12-month period through March 2024, the Labor Department reported Wednesday. Wall Street had been waiting for the revisions numbers, with many economists expecting a sizeable reduction in the originally reported figures. "The labor market appears weaker than originally reported," said Jeffrey Roach, chief economist at LPL Financial. "A deteriorating labor market will allow the Fed to highlight both sides of the dual mandate and investors should expect the Fed to prepare markets for a cut at the September meeting." Nonfarm payroll jobs totaled 158.7 million through July, an increase of 1.6% from the same month in 2023.

As the parent of four children who's been back-to-school shopping for over a decade, I have realized the real key to surviving this time of year is being creative. With two in middle school and two in college, back-to-school shopping costs me almost as much as (if not more than) our family's most expensive holiday, Christmas. If nothing works out from last year's clothing, many secondhand stores will buy the kid's clothes that no longer fit.
